Random sampling of exit folios of student work for Authority subjects for 2013

Purpose

To advise schools about the random sampling of exit folios of student work for Authority subjects for 2013.

Background

Random sampling is a quality-assurance process designed to provide information about the comparability of final exit level of achievement decisions. This process occurs after a course is completed.

Each year the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) takes a stratified random sample of finalised Year 12 folios from schools across the state and sends them for review to panels from different districts. A report on the random sampling process is published annually on the QSA website.

Information

Random sampling refers to the process of sampling schools and student folios. However, subjects are not selected randomly; they are selected according to a range of criteria. Schools are chosen randomly within each subject. For each chosen group, a random sample of students is selected, stratified by levels of achievement awarded to the students.

The information used to select schools is based on data from the Student Data Capture System

(SDCS) data submission 3. Students whose exit folios will be sampled are determined after SDCS data submission 5. Selected schools are notified by letter of the nominated subjects, students and

submission requirements. Schools not required to send random sampling submissions will also be advised by letter.

Random sampling submissions must arrive at QSA district offices no later than Friday 6 December 2013.

The QSA will retain the folios until May 2014. Please note that this date is beyond the date that schools are required to retain folios.

What you need to do

Bring this information to the attention of staff teaching Year 12 students.

Ensure that exit folios of Year 12 work in Authority subjects are available for random sampling should they be required.
