A long-term study of the forces acting on tractors and trailed implements in the soil was initiated. The pretreatment of the electrodes has been shown to have a marked influence on the "blank" values.

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Only one such ring closure has been recorded in the literature, and the structure of the product is unclear. One compound has been shown to be the expected adduct, while the structure of the other compound is not yet known.

STRUCTURES

By using the additive property of the azomethine group, it has been possible to explain in a new way the formation of 2-phenyl-4-keto-thiazolidine by reaction of benzaldehyde and thioglycolamide. At the same time, the theoretical side of the problem was pursued and methods for predicting the collapse load of such frames were worked out.

INVESTIGATIONS BY RESEARCH STUDENTS (6) The Philosophical Significance of Cicero's De Fato

It is proposed to continue this work and in conjunction with it an investigation of the dental plaque. To determine if any correlation exists between the hearing acuity and the vertical dimension of the face;. For this reason, a recalculation of the entire statistical material according to current statistical classifications is necessary.

A clear, critical contribution in the field of educational administration was made by Mr. Glastonbury in his research The Educational Needs of a South Australian Rural Community. A review of library facilities in Ripon County with suggestions for desirable improvements was made by Mr. 7) Problems in the organization of education. His experience in the war, along with the experiment, formed the basis for Mr. Jones's discussion of Special Class - Is It Worth It.

The general conclusions were that mousepox provided a laboratory model for the study of the essential character of the human diseases.

THE INTERACTION OF INFLUENZA VIRUSES AND MUCOPOLY- SACCHARIDES

An amplifier capable of measuring and studying low-level low-frequency signals and thus suitable for biological purposes is under development. Two comprehensive papers have been published discussing the pathogenesis of rat pox and the bearing of the results in rats on the general problem of the pathogenesis of human exanthema. It has been shown that an "inhibitory gradient" for soluble mucoids analogous to the "receptor gradient" on red cells can be established by the use of suitable active and "indicator" viruses (Stone and Burnet).

The amount of dialysable N and reducing substance released from ovomucin by virus enzyme action is related to the position in the gradient of the virus in question (Gottschalk). A very important demonstration was given that, with simple technique, virus can be easily isolated from throat swabs taken a month earlier. A comprehensive study of immunological responses was initiated, particularly with regard to viruses in the chick embryo and the adult birds.

The inability of chick embryos to produce antibody against antigens that are highly effective in adults has been established for viruses, bacteriophages, and foreign red blood cells.

MISCELLANEOUS

War against the development of German baroque literature, with particular reference to recent evaluations of the meaning of the term. The message of the Expressionists is, of course, diametrically opposed to that of the National Socialists. The collected results of the clay work have been collected in a form suitable for publication.

Exploration of the structure of the Yallourn-Morwell lignite deposit continued in the light of boring data. About eight square miles of Dookie County have been surveyed in detail (to the tune of ten chains to the inch). Observations were made of the shale structure near Tallangatta and further south in the Mitta Mitta Valley.

RESEARCH SUPERVISION

This study of the unsuccessful settlement of a number of Victorians in the Camden Harbor district of the Kimberleys, Westêtn Australia, was continued in three ways during this year: (a). In discussion with scientists and pastoralists on the scientific problems involved in the high mortality of settlers' sheep;. (c) On a visit in August 1948 by Professor Crawford to the site of the settlement.

Parnaby has worked on the history of the Riverina and has read an article on the subject at the A.N.Z.A.A.S. 12) History of the Australian Workers Union. Love has solved the problem of the distortions caused in a rapidly rotating mirror by the stresses resulting from centrifugal action. Research has been done into the strength of the dried coal and the influence of the process variables on this strength.

The samples were analyzed for moisture content partly in the School of Engineering and partly in the Mining Department, by courtesy of the Director.

OTHER RESEARCH

In the School of Engineering, they designed and tested a new and improved distillation apparatus for moisture determination and showed that the classic oven-drying method for determining moisture in brown coal gives results of 1% on average. lower than those obtained by the distillation technique. The sampling results showed that under normal conditions of use of brown coal, the moisture content from the mine to the furnace changes by only a few percent. Furthermore, the difference in moisture content between coal samples from the same source was surprisingly low.

It has also been found that the size of samples to be taken from a batch of lignite for a given sampling accuracy increases as the storage period of the coal increases. The research program was designed to provide information on the oxidation rate of three different Victorian brown coals under different conditions. Samples were tested both in the raw state and after Fleissner drying, where drying was performed under different conditions in terms of steam temperature and rates of heating and cooling.

The coals were allowed to oxidize at atmospheric pressure in an atmosphere of air, the oxidation taking place at two different temperatures, namely 20°C and 37°C.

ORE DRESSING

The creep properties are particularly sensitive to small changes in the composition and/or pre-treatment of the alloys. This is a general attack on the problem of the changes in atomic structure associated with the deformation and fracture of metals and associated processes. The results are likely to open a new approach to the practical problem of the strength of metals at elevated temperatures.

Research has been done into its physical properties and techniques have been developed to manufacture the metal. A further branch of work has focused on a preliminary investigation of the solubility ranges of added elements and the properties of the alloys. Radok studied the vertical structure of the atmosphere and the structure of wind gusts with the help of aircraft taking off.

Investigations are being made into the problem of the nature of tuberculin sensitivity, its mechanism and role in the pathogenesis of tuberculosis.

INVESTIGATIONS BY RESEARCH SCHOLARS (1) The notion of "justification"

Investigations with this equipment either completed or in progress are:-. i) Angular distribution of the a-particles from the Li' (p,a)He4 reaction. The presence of the factor B(E) indicates that protons with high angular momentum (f-waves) are involved in the nuclear reaction. The shape of this latter distribution depends on the nature of the binding forces between the elementary nucleons, the proton and the neutron.

The entire apparatus in the cosmic ray department was destroyed by fire in October 1948. The first project listed below is led by dr. Mohair; other projects are supervised by dr. 6) Structure of cosmic ray air showers. The calculation of the first two processes is almost complete, and work on the last process continues.

The Liberals, the Labor Movement and the Labor Party and the Bill of 1898; (iii) the Labor Party and "White Australia", Legislation 1901-5—The Immigration Restriction Bill and the Pacific Island Labourers' Bill; (iv) Recent Developments, 1920-40—The Pan-Pacific Trade Union Movement and the embargo on war goods to Japan.

GENERAL PHYSIOLOGY (1) Ionic Equilibrium in the Body

Stratmann's work on some aspects of the mechanism of electrolyte distribution in biological systems was continued. A study of neuromuscular transmission in the frog and in the extraocular muscles of the mammal is being worked on. They can be used to account for the contractile and dilator activity of the postganglionic fibers.

VETERINARY Department head: dr. Research on stimulation of immunity against Str. agalactiae and the detection of circulating immune bodies in the bloodstream continues. The field work is carried out by officers of the Livestock Sector of the Ministry of Agriculture. As far as is known, this parasite does not occur in Victoria, but to determine whether this is the case, the diaphragms of domestic cats are being examined for cysts of T. The administration of a vaccine prepared in developing eggs to prevent tick fever in hens is in the laboratory gave promising results.

Senior Lecturer in Charge: Mr. 1) Work on the Hair Tracts of Vertebrate Skin Worker: Mr. The systematic examination of the series of marsupial embryos which form the basis of this work is now completed and the final paper on this section - Hair Tracts of Marsupials. Microscopic examination (with serial sections) has proved to be of limited use, due to the presence of sand in the stomach. A study of left ventricular muscle fiber diameter in normal hearts and in simple hypertensive left ventricular dilatation.
