President’s Report
Christine Butters
Welcome to the 33
rdAnnual Report of the Revesby Workers Little Athletics Centre.
Following my election to the role of President at last year’s AGM, this year has been a steep learning and growing curve for the Centre. With the resignation last year of a number of long term members the Committee has undergone a big change with a number of new members coming on board and then taking on significant roles. We have grown and learnt together and I thank all the committee members for their time and patience as we regrouped, organized and ran the Centre during the season.
As was mentioned in last year’s AGM the Centre was hampered by obstacles imposed by the construction work at the University. Following the AGM a lot of negotiation was undertaken by key stakeholders in the Centre and with the support of our Patrons, local councilors and the General Manager of Bankstown City Council we were able to resolve a lot of the issues which were creating uncertainty for us surrounding our ability to function for a 33
rdseason.
We commenced the season with a newly refurbished field event area and much co-operation from the University in terms of work being done to maintain the standard of the area. This gave a lot of comfort in knowing that we could indeed offer a complete program to the children who registered for the 2012/2013 season.
While this positive activity has occurred we, as a committee, are aware it is not a long term solution and we will be looking over the coming months for a permanent home for the Centre which will be needed when the University moves on its next stage of development. We have been given assurances that this will not happen for a couple of years.
I wish to thank all of those who have volunteered their time throughout the season but my sincere appreciation goes firstly to the committee members who have stepped up and supported me in my first season as President. To all those who took on key positions especially, thank you, as a Centre cant run without these positions being filled. To the walks night volunteers also, these parents come back on request to assist our athletes with this very technical event and we do appreciate your input.
During the season we have highlighted some deficits which definitely need addressing next season.
Our Centre is noticeably absent from performing at some of Little Athletics NSW key events namely State Relays, Trans Tasman and State Multis. This is an area which we need to work toward improving, however this can only be done with the assistance of more volunteers on the Committee.
For some years now we have run without an Officer for Championships or an Officer for Officials and this year we were also without a Secretary and had a Publicity Officer for only part of the season. This has left a few people to juggle their own positions and fulfil dual roles, not ideal, but nevertheless done because no-one wanted to let the Centre and athletes down.
I close my report by acknowledging two very important people without whom I think I would have sunk rather swum. Our elder statesman, Michael Irwin, for his smiling face, reliable participation and caring nature and for always being there. Our liaison Director John Rodwell, who has been a mentor for me, an ear to listen and wise counsel when we have had any issues or concerns.
Moving toward the 2013/2014 season I look forward to working with parents and athletes to
continue to grow and develop Revesby Workers’ Little Athletics Centre.
Secretary’s Report
Position Vacant
2012/2013 was a season without a Secretary. With a number of new committee members just learning the ropes foisting the Secretary’s role on anyone was too much so the President and registrar together took the minutes at meetings, circulated them and undertook all activities that the secretary would normally do. It is hoped that on the new committee for 2013/14 someone will volunteer for this role as it is integral in holding the Centre’s activities together.
Vice President Report
Anthony Tahhan
This has been our 33
rdseason and it has been quite a successful one. This has been very satisfying, considering the initial doubts about our grounds during the off season but thankfully the University has allowed us to remain there for the time being. Also, we had quite a number of our long serving
Rylee Towell, John Rodwell (our announcer) and
Laura Towell (10 year athlete and Vice Captain)

Club Captains and Vice Captains 2012-13
Captain’s Speech 2012-13 Presentation Night– Belinda & Nathan Anderson
Hi everyone, I’m Belinda and this is my brother Nathan and we were Club Captains again this season.
Firstly, we would like to thank all the Committee members for the countless hours of time they invested within our Club; setting up and packing up each week and running our Club in general.
Without your help we wouldn’t be able to run our Club each week.
We would also like to thank Rebecca for running the Canteen and Michael on the BBQ each week, always having enough food for both athletes and spectators. Next we would like to thank all the parents for bringing their children each week and helping on events or as age managers. We would also like to thank all the athletes who competed in events each week, without them we wouldn’t have Little Athletics!
Finally we would like to thank Christine Butters, our Club President for all the work she has done for our Club. This season we had many athletes compete at Zone, Region and State and we would like to commend all those athletes on their efforts at these events.
This season in the Under 15’s and Under 17’s we saw a number of records broken by William and Daniel, Daniel also broke something else… a window! This happened in one of the earlier weeks of competition after he had already hit the fence and the building on his first two throws at discus and the broken window resulted in the University turning one of the discus cages around to face away from the buildings!
Once again our age group was fairly small this season with some new faces arriving and some old ones returning. It’s probably safe to say that with the exception of a few, our age group was not the most serious but we enjoyed coming every week and had a great season.
This year was Belinda’s last season of Little Athletics , but I’ll be back next season and I hope to see all of you back here as well.

Treasurer’s Report
Richard Loane
The financial position of the Centre has remained solid throughout the 2012-2013 season. A Balance Sheet and account of the Centre’s Income and Expenditure accompany this report.
The Centre posted a surplus of just over $10 000, which is an improvement from last year’s surplus of less than $1 000. The Centre’s income remained steady, however, the costs incurred were
reduced relative to last season, which resulted in a surplus being recorded. Two items that influenced these figures are Equipment and Trophies.
The funds received by the Centre were boosted by the ongoing and generous support of the Revesby Workers’ Club, whose annual gift of $7 500 was accepted with gratitude. A donation of a thousand dollars was received from Bankstown Council. Although not part of this season’s accounts, I would like to highlight our successful application for a McDonalds grant. We recently received a cheque for a thousand dollars, which will be spent on equipment. The high jump mats are the likely beneficiary of this funding. Our Centre President, Chris Butters, is to be congratulated for putting the application together.
This season saw the introduction of the use of an electronic spreadsheet to maintain and monitor the Centre’s cashbook. This new system continues to be refined and is working well. The time taken in the preparation and presentation of the various reports has reduced.
I would like to thank my fellow Committee members for their patience and assistance in helping me get up to speed in this my first season in the roll of Treasurer, in particular Chris Butters and
Rebecca Taylor. The Centre’s Auditor, Wal Kelleway and a former Centre Treasurer, Robert Gray, have also helped me greatly, especially in producing the Quarterly and Annual reports.
The Committee has prudently managed the financial operation of the Centre. As such, the Centre is
well placed to embark on a new season this September and provide its current and future members
with the opportunity to take part in the key ideas of ‘Family, Fun and Fitness’, as endorsed by Little
Athletics NSW.

Registrar’s Report
Mikaela Butters
This was my first season as registrar and what a learning curve, I wish to thank our previous registrar, Neil Anderson, for his help and patience in teaching me the ropes of the online system and paperwork.
Our numbers this season were slightly down from last season, however this was not a surprise with the uncertainty surrounding our grounds not helping us in retaining a lot of our families. We were strong in new registrations with nearly 60% of athletes being new registrations. With the grounds being revamped this season and a smoother program having all events open I am confident that many of these families will return to us next season. It was encouraging to see many of our registrations being completed through the online system, with 70% of registrations being online, I am hoping that more will use this next season as it saves a lot of time in entering data for individual athletes and for the families is cheaper when registering.
This year we also trialed a parent roster based on choices made by parents when originally registering online or manually, this allowed many of our parent helpers to learn a key role, got many more parents involved in the running and gave a more even spread of parent helpers. Being a trial run we have much to improve on next season but I was satisfied with the level of involvement from our parents.
Registrations for the new season will commence in August, this season we are looking to hold a couple of registration nights before our first night. On our first official night there will be no registrations taken in order to have every athlete and parent out on the field learning the ropes. Keep an eye on our web site for more information.

They also received a Ten Year Service Certificate from LANSW. We commend them for their commitment and loyalty to the Centre and also their parents for encouraging and supporting them.
Equipment Officer’s Report
Paul Saurine
I volunteered in the position of Equipment Officer this season. Other than the need to purchase a few small items, there was no real need to make any major equipment purchases this year. Minor items such as measuring tapes for discus/javelin, watering cans/rakes, for the long jump area and rubber mats for the BBQ/canteen area were purchased to help make life a little easier.
The $1,000.00 McDonalds grant was a welcome donation which is going towards the recovering of high jump mats for the oncoming season. Barry Butters has continued to assist in the marking out of the grounds on a regular basis.
Canteen Manager’s Report
Rebecca Taylor
Well another season has come and gone. It was another fantastic season.
I would like to congratulate each athlete for their hard work and effort throughout the season.
I would like to thank the chief BBQ cooker Michael. Without him we would have no BBQ each week.
To Chris for always making sure that we were all ok and helping out when she can.
We didn't hold any fundraiser this season. But we most certainly be doing a few next season. This is always a good way of buying equipment that our kids use each and every week.
This season saw the start of the parent helper roster. I felt this worked really well throughout the season and I would like to thank each parent for helping out each week.
I would encourage parents to join our committee. It's not only rewarding but you get to meet new people and be involved in something that your kids are enjoying.
I look forward to seeing you all next season and until then take care.

Records & Ranking Officer’s Report
Maureen Carey
The 2012-2013 season was one of regrouping for our Centre. More than half our athletes were new to the sport and therefore there was a lot of teaching and skill development to be focused on. To this end the Centre enlisted the support of a coach Liz Radley who spent many Wednesday afternoons teaching a small group of children the basics of a number of athletics events. This paid off for one athlete in particular Alexandra Witting who was the only athlete this season to achieve an Event PB. Alexandra achieved this by getting a PB every time she competed in the discus and this was an event she had focused on during training seesions with Liz.
Due to a number of rainouts again this season the awards criteria was modified to account for loss of competition nights and and thus there were no Gold PB Performance Certificates awarded. There were however Silver Certificates awarded to the following athletes for achieving between 15-24 PB’s: Emilia Pengue, Benjamin Pittman, Elias Tahhan, Bridget Morgan, Cody Metcalfe, Owen Forest-Jones, Sophia Witting, Christian Klianis, Annabel McDonald, Evie Donnelly, Ella Ashton, Adam Taylor, Lauren Johnson, Angela Kiourkas, Maria Kiourkas, Joelle Forest-Jones, Peter Panagakis, Jordan Carey, Bronte Ballantine-Jones, Hayley Shipley, Jordan McGrath, Alexandra Witting, Nathan Mattson, Matthew Hain,Alyssa Saurine, Guo Jun Gan, Daniel Koliopoulos and Belinda Anderson
There were also 105 athletes who achieved 7-14 PB’s – a Bronze PB Performance Certificate It was great to see so many athletes trying to beat their best performance each week.
Congratulations once again to our athletes who broke centre records this season. The amount of records broken was fewer than in past seasons but of note were;
William Derederenalagi:
High Jump 1.8 m on 15/2/13 100 Hurdles 14.85 on 9/11/12 Daniel Koliopoulos :
Discus 60.89m on 23/11/12 Javelin 39.48m on 19/10/12 Adam Ogden :
Discus : 35.74 m on 26/10/12 Javelin 27.5 m on 19/10/12
Congratulations also to Laura Towell in the under 15 Girls for equalling the High jump record of 1.50 on 14/9/12.
Zone Records Set this Season:- 1 new zone record set by RWLAC athlete Riley Butler (U13) - 1500m walk by 45 seconds
William did manage to break his own records several times throughout the season and for these achievements he was awarded the Joan Carroll Memorial Trophy.
Adam Ogden was the successful nominee this season for the Michael Irwin Award for
Athletic Excellence. Adam broke 2 centre record, came top 3 in Zone in 5 events, (including 2
first places), top 3 in Region in 3 events all first places and unfortunately sustained an injury
which inhibited his performance at State this year. Adam is a very deserving recipient of this
award.
Once again this season McDonald’s provided us with achievement certificates for the athletes and these were distributed throughout the season.
Championships Report
This season we had a number of new athletes compete in the Zone and Region carnivals and were very proud of our six athletes who made it through to State.

State Relays: For some years now we have not entered any teams into the State relays.
Ideally it is a competition we need to build up to, and doubt having an Officer for Championships who could promote this would assist.
State Multis: In past seasons RWLAC has had some good numbers attend State Multis, but as our demographics have changed, so too has our participation in this event. This year we had only one athlete attend, Alyssa Saurine, who placed 21
stin the Under 13 girls. Again, the presence of Championships officer may enhance our participation levels.
State Cross country for 2011-2012 season was held at West Dapto in July last year. James
&Phoebe Botrill were the only RWLAC athletes attending – placing 14 & 32 respectively.
Trans Tasman we had no athletes compete in Trans Tasman this year.

Fun and Fitness Program for Under 6 and Under 7 Athletes
RWLAC has for many years now run a Fun and Fitness event as part of the program for the Under 6 and Under 7 athletes. At times it has been adhoc and has relied upon the parents to run it, without guidance or structure. However over the past few years one of our ex-athletes Mikaela Butters (who is also now Centre Registrar) has been running a program for these athletes with the focus on skill development for the events Little Athletics has to offer. She has been very willingly assisted some weeks also by Emily Taylor (another ex-athlete). In running this program and mentoring the Under 6 parents while they “learn the ropes” as age managers she is building up a group of parents and athletes who are becoming increasingly confident in athletics participation. Below are some of the photos of these sessions.
