When seen she was anemic, malnourished, very weak and in a state of stupor. On examination there was very complete right hemiplegia; only hand, forearm and foot could be moved slightly. During treatment, she seemed to improve for a few days, moving her hand better and answering questions.
But soon the improvement stopped and she became duller and weaker, the stupor increased and the power of movement decreased. At the end of the three weeks in the hospital, complete paralysis of the left side suddenly occurred, the numbness deepened into a coma and the temperature rose to 4 degrees. A man, formerly healthy, 28, consulted a surgeon because of severe abdominal pain, which had lasted for about four hours.
It came suddenly and no meal was taken for four hours before the start. The pain was located in the right lower abdomen, near McBurnie's point, but tenderness was elicited over a much larger area. The next morning the surgeon found that the patient had not slept because of constant and increasing pain.
