President’s Message
Welcome to the August 2013 newsletter of the Sydney Pacific Athletic Club...a club that is in “fast forward” in Track & Field.
In my first term as President I experienced a very exciting 2012-13 summer season with great performances from both new and long standing Sydney Pacific athletes. Congratulations to:
Tim Leathart and Adam Rutter on representing Australia at the 2012 London Olympic Games
Peter Crombie who became the 6th inductee into theAustralian Masters’ Athletics Hall of Fame. Peter's track career spans 53 years of which 30 of these have been in Masters. Peter was recently honoured with Life Membership to Athletics NSW.
Tim is representing Australia in the 4 x 100m relay at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow this month. Another great achievement.
At the recent Australian half marathon championship and representing NSW, Amy Stafford finished 6th and Emma Collyer finished 7th.
Our Club
The Sydney Pacific Athletic Club was formed in the late 1980s. It is a club for junior, senior and masters athletes and is located on Sydney’s northern beaches and northern suburbs. It operates from two venues:
The Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation, Narrabeen, and
Turramurra Memorial Oval, Turramurra.Sydney Pacific’s values include “enjoyment, self improvement, commitment, sportsmanship and friendships”.
The 2013 AGM and PRESENTATION DAY
The AGM and Presentation Day was held on Sunday 21 July 2013 at the St Ives Showground. It was very well attended and was followed by a BBQ lunch.
Emma Collyer, Club President commented on:
The new Club uniform that was introduced in 2012-13
The very impressive summer season’s results at all levels
The Club’s requirement to find several additional coaches
New initiatives for 2013-14 that include the development of a new Club website, the launch of a regular Club newsletter, and targeting schools and Little Athletics Centres with the aim to attract new members to the Club, and
That in 2012-13, the Club had 140 registered members, up by 35 from the previous season. The goal is to increase active membership to over 200.Emma thanked all those who were involved with and assisted the Club during 2012-13.

The 2012-13 Summer Season in Review (1) (
The recently concluded 2012-13 Australian Track & Field summer season was one of most successful seasons in the club’s recent history. Highlights of the season include:
Australian 2012 Olympic Team Representatives
Tim Leathart (4 x 100m Relay) and Adam Rutter (Race Walking) were selected in the Australian Olympic Team for the 2012 London Olympics.
Tim is coached by John Patchett, a member of the Sydney Pacific Coaching Team, and Adam’s 1st coach was Bill Nappin, also a member of the Sydney Pacific Coaching Team.
Adam is with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra.
A fantastic achievement.
NSW Inter Club Competition and NSW Club Championships
Sydney Pacific athletes competed at the Athletics NSW Inter Club and All Comers competitions during the 2012-13 season.
In the Six Round Interclub Competition for juniors, seniors and masters which concluded in December 2012, Sydney Pacific finished in a very credible 10th place out of 44 participating clubs.
At the January 2013 NSW Club Championships, Sydney Pacific finished in 3rd place out of 24 competing clubs. This was an outstanding result given the size of the club when compared with some others.
A great season’s achievements and a credit to all athletes and coaches.
NSW and Australian Junior Championships
At the Australian Junior Championships that were held in Perth in March 2013, Sydney Pacific’s performances were outstanding. They included:
1 Gold medal: Cameron McEntyre U15 Javelin
3 Silver medals: Falito van Woerkham U15 Javelin; Lucy Frances U15 Walk; Jacob Winston U14 High Jump
5 Bronze medals: Sean Fitzsimmons U20 400m and 4x400m relay; Amy Bettiol U20 Walk; Cameron McEntyre U15 Discus; Harrison Mavin U14 Walk.There was an excellent turnout of Sydney Pacific athletes at the NSW Junior Championships that were held at SOPAC in February 2013. The results were very impressive with top 8 positions achieved in a wide range of events and a medal tally of:
2 Gold medals: Cameron McEntyre U16 Javelin; Harrison Mavin U14 Walk
5 Silver medals: Sean Fitzsimmons U20 400m; Evan Clothier U20 400m Hurdles; Amy Bettiol U20 Walk; Lucy Frances U16 Walk; Hayden Millican U14 Walk
6 Bronze medals: Jacob Winston U14 High Jump, U14 Long Jump and U14 Triple Jump;Evan Clothier U20 Long Jump; Falito van Woerkham U16 Javelin; Aiden Kerr U16 Walk.

The 2012-13 Summer Season in Review (2) NSW and Australian Senior Championships
At the Australian Senior Championships that were held in Sydney in April 2013, Sydney Pacific’s performances were outstanding. Tim Leathart competed in the 100m and 200m, Robert McIntyre in the 400m, Jared West in the 800m, Danny Brandwood in the 400m Hurdles, Nathan Connor in the Long Jump and Annaliese Gardiner in the 100m.
Tim won the silver medal in the 100m and was placed 5th in the 200m
Jared won the bronze medal in the 800m
Danny was a finalist in the 400m Hurdles
Nathan was a finalist in the Long Jump
Robert reached the semi finals of the 400m.Sydney Pacific’s results at the NSW Open and AWD Championships held at SOPAC in
February 2013 were also outstanding with top 8 positions achieved in a number of events and a medal tally of:
3 Gold medals: Tim Leathart 100m and 200m; Mark Howard Triple Jump
6 Silver medals: Angelique Booth 20+ 100m AWD and 200m AWD; Amy Bettiol 5,000m Walk; Robert McIntyre 400m; Jared West 800m; Danny Brandwood 400m Hurdles
2 Bronze medals: Amy Stafford 10,000m; Nathan Connor Long Jump.NSW and Australian Masters Championships
At the Australian Masters Championships that were held in Canberra at Easter 2013. A world record was smashed by 24 seconds by the Australian W60 4x800m team of which Sydney
Pacific’s Paula Moorhouse is a member. A magnificent performance by Paula and her team.
Sydney Pacific’s performances were outstanding and the medallists were:
3 Gold medals: John Searle M65 High Jump and Long Jump; Wayne Marriott M55 100m Hurdles
8 Silver medals: Wayne Marriott M55 Triple Jump; Christopher Brack M45 100m, 200m and 4x100m Relay; Krzysztof Wardecki M40 400m, 400m Hurdles and 4x100m Relay;Sam Odede M35 60m
4 Bronze medals: Paula Moorhouse W60 400m and 800m; Wayne Marriott M55 Long Jump; Dave Isackson M50 200m.A good number of Sydney Pacific’s masters’ athletes competed at the NSW Masters Championships that were held at SOPAC in March 2013. The results were amazing:

What’s been happening at Narrabeen and Turramurra
Narrabeen
We have wrapped ourselves up for the winter period. The various groups continue to train and some athletes have been competing in a range of winter competitions. The juniors are preparing for their various school competitions.
Tim Leathart has now left for the World Championships in Moscow.
The soccer players have departed permanently from the centre of the field.
Turramurra
Warren Martin, a long standing, successful and highly respected Sydney Pacific coach (sprints, hurdles, strength and conditioning) at Turramurra Oval, retired from his Club Coaching role in March 2013. Warren’s contribution to developing and mentoring young athletes and other coaches has been outstanding and both greatly appreciated and valued.

Achievements: John was one of Australia’s leading master’s athletes in 2012-13.
John won both the high jump and long jump in every competition in which he entered e.g. Interclub, State, Nationals, Oceania and Gold Coast.
John set new state records in both the long jump (5.05m) and high jump (1.52m), an Australian record in the high jump of 1.52m, and was ranked 6th in the world for high jump in 2012.
