The Club’s crest & bulletin name reflect ‘Odin’ (anglo-saxon ‘Woden’), the ancient Nordic God of Wisdom.
Odin had two ravens called Hugin and Munin (Thought and Memory) who flew forth every day and returned at night to tell him what they had seen, so contributing to his wisdom.

RAVEN REPORTER Jeff Ibbotson PHOTOGRAPHER

Last week Things you should know about
South America, has three Rotary clubs, the oldest of which was chartered in 1953.
President Lyn welcomed members including Debbie, who has just returned from North America.
Mr Parking Gary reported on parking at the MacGregor Primary fete as
‘good fellowship’, raising $107.35. Members endorsed Gary’s proposal to donate
$100 from the parking to the McGuigan family whose 3 year old daughter Annie requires continued treatment for a rare and aggresive malignant brain tumour – see http://www.gofundme.com/mcguiganfamily . Last week’s Raven reported that our parking duties for 2014 had finished. No sooner had the Raven gone to press than Gary was asked by Thoroughbred Park to park at race meetings on 28 November and 14 December.
John Gray passed on some sad news from Honorary Member Don Whit- bread, that Margaret Russell had died suddenly. Margaret was the wife of Ron Russell who was our Club President in 1989 – 90.
Phil Ibbotson reported that Louise’s health is much improved. She is once again getting out and about.
Jeff Ibbotson reported on the recent District Conference that was held in con- junction with District 9675 (which takes in the area south of the Parramatta River).
Dr Brendan Nelson, Director, Australian War Memorial, was the keynote speaker at Friday night’s opening dinner.
Conference speakers reflected the theme ‘Our Youth, Our Future’. Matt Kershaw, CEO of Ylead, spoke of Rotary’s advantage in competing for young people’s time and money. Rotary is well known for its results. If people see and hear of our results they will engage. While respecting the best of our past, our founda- tions, Matt said that we should cultivate new thinking and welcome new ideas.
Andrea Ho manages ABC’s 666 radio in Canberra, while Brent Juratowitch is a former diplomat. Each spoke of their year in Japan as a Rotary youth exchangee student as life changing. Andrea spoke of the importance of having a clear goal – End Polio Now is a perfect example. Brent said that while there has been a lot of emphasis on Rotary’s ‘brand’, our strength is our people who link with our local com- munity by listening to it and responding to its needs.
Yass Rotarian, Scott Burke, another former exchange student, also stressed the need to make Rotary’s purpose clear to potential members and recommended keeping in touch with former exchange students.
Katharine McLennan highlighted the importance of diversity and inclusion.
We draw members from a wide range of backgrounds and can work with them as a team by being curious, listening to each other and maintaining our mental fitness.
All three finalists in the Four Way Test Speaking Competition impressed the audience with both the structure and delivery of their talks.
Ken Linkhorn brought us up to date with End Polio Now. In the last 12 months worldwide polio cases dropped from 318 to 278. In Nigeria and Somalia cases are diminishing. However, in Afghanistan and Pakistan they rose.
Berry Rotarian Ken Hutt told how he flew a paraglider from 7200 m off the flanks of the sixth highest mountain in the world to raise funds for End Polio Now -

More inspiration came from young Australians who have set up successful small-scale self-sufficient aid operations in Africa and Cambodia – click on:

Helen Sahhar Exhibition: Helen has been asked to do a painting exhibition at Bespoke Framing and Photography by Steve Brown. The exhibition opening is on:
Friday 5 December 2014 at 7:30pm at the store at 8 Townsend Street, Phillip.
The meeting concluded with John Widdup outlining the club’s next Western desert project at Wanarn, WA: refurbishing an old clinic as quarters for staff who will operate the dialysis equipment in the new clinic. Google maps reckons we could cycle the 3000 km from Canberra in 146 hours, but we’ll fly to Uluru and drive 449 km to the community in WA. It will be a similar project to our refurbishment of the clinic at Kiwirrkurra. Wanarn’s old clinic is in better shape. The air con and solar hot water is working. We will convert a waiting room into a lounge and an office into a bedroom, install a flatpack kitchen, patch and paint the walls, insulate the ceiling, install an internal window, install a backup water tank and associated pump plumbing and power, and add a new fence. We should have an electrician.
John stated that Sarah Brown has Commonwealth funding for the project, so we don’t need to do major fundraising for this project. Perhaps mention of Rotary in- volvement helped her to get the funding. The project will be ready to start once Sarah receives formal possession of the building.
John estimates the project can be done by one work party working for 10 days over a 14 day round trip. John will do some more work on the logistics of the project with a view to sending a work party in the second half of May 2015.
