Something a little different to try during the Quicker Bowls season
Healesville Bowling Club Newsletter July / August 2017 11
The Grants committee met with Railey Orger from Yarra Ranges Council in May to discuss grants available to the club for some of the priority works being considered by the committee.
Projects being investigated by the committee include an upgrade of the current Mens and Ladies toilets, provision of a Disabled toilet, improved Disabled access, Kitchen Upgrade and Bowling Green Lights upgrade.
Each year the council provides the opportunity for local clubs to submit applications for capital funds to improve facilities within the shire. The committee will be working to have submissions completed later in the year to meet the next round of funding.
Obviously council grants are one way to generate much needed funds. The committee are always looking at funding options available to the club. The committee will be pursuing the upgrade of lights separately to these funding rounds as there may be opportunities elsewhere for sustainabil- ity funding.
We will keep you informed on progress of these initiatives.
The committee would also like to inform the club that we were unsuccessful in entering the Origin Energy $10,000 Grant Competition, there's always next year!
For your information the Grants Committee Members are:
Fay Mays Robert Ayres Rob Broadhurst Mark Hoffman
If members have any suggestions on funding or projects that should be considered, please let one of your committee know, the more opportunities the better.

2017/2018 Season announced
Tuesday competition will begin on Tuesday 26th of September 2017;
Saturday competition will begin on Saturday 7th of October 2017.
Bowls Australia
Gayanne Hutt and Robert Ayres met with Scot Nicholson. He represents Bowls Australia, replac- ing Barry Leicester, and is focused on the survival and operation of the Clubs in our region.
Topics covered in the meeting included the condition and status of the Clubrooms, Council Grants, Sports grants, and participation statistics.
He was very interested in returning to our Club to offer assistance in club goals and an additional meeting is being organised for July 2017.
Bowls Victoria
Bob Brown and Robert Ayres attended the Bowls Victoria Eastern Ranges & Yarra Region Meet- ing on Friday 2nd of June 2017 at North Balwyn Bowls Club.
The following topics were discussed and/or addressed and provided for your information:
Lawful Discrimination (to play Single Sex Competitions)
This was a big issue as it is mandatory and legally binding to follow the correct procedures. Put simply, a Club must now keep a file of Member’s preferences in terms of holding Single Sex com- petitions and “the majority rules”. The Club must conduct the survey of every Member and main- tain the results as evidence, in case of a discrimination challenge. Two things to note from this:
Singles Championships are excluded because of the State and National path that each event fol- lows ie. Becoming Regional, State or National Champion. The other exclusion is where the Club has OFFERED the same (or similar) event for the other sex ie. Men’s and Ladies Pairs etc. If the event is OPEN ie. Either sex can enter, then there is no issue.

Competitive Participation
This issue is all too familiar with every Club – making the game interesting and inclusive for all members of the Community. Our Grants Sub-committee knows all too well that a successful ap- plication depends on the proof that we a game that offers community participation, especially women, indigenous people, children and the disabled. Further to that, the Region recognises the demands of the general Public in this changing and chaotic World. They want diversity, brevity and flexibility. In other words, they want a game that is short, sharp and cheap.
To this end, our Association are looking at several options:
Some of you already know about the Quicka Bowls format that has been trialled, successfully;
Barefoot Bowls and Corporate Bowls are popular because they meet those demands; Schools are adding the game to the curriculum because it is a soft non-contact sport that parents prefer (and getting Members certified to “Work with Children” is relatively simple); “Come and Try Days”
and “Jack Attack” have been successful with Clubs;
Changing the format of the current competitions – the traditional approaches are no longer work- ing eg. Splitting the Pennant season into 2 separate competitions – Spring (Sep-Dec) and Sum- mer (Jan-Apr/May).

Quicker Bowls
As members would be aware the club entered a team this year into the new Quicker Bowls compe- tition—a format developed and introduced to clubs by John Inglese from Richmond Union Bowl- ing Club. With the help of Peter Russell and Lyn Baker a total of eight teams competed over eight weeks culminating in the finals fixture held at Mooroolbark Bowling Club on the 27th May, 2017.
There were to sections of eight teams. These included, from Eastern Region, Bayswater, Ferntree Gully, Upwey Tecoma, Healesville, Mooroolbark, Boronia, Lilydale and Yarra Junction. The Yarra Region included the Eastern Eagles, Richmond Union, Glen Waverly, MCC– Kew Sports, Haw- thorn, Rosanna, Auburn and a second team from Bayswater.
The finals day was held with teams from Eastern and Yarra Regions competing against each oth- er. In the end it was Bayswater and Ferntree Gully playing off in the final with Bayswater coming out on top.
All members that competed in Quicker Bowls enjoyed the format. It was designed to give new members to bowls a competition that provided experiences and challenges not seen in the usual social games and practice.

Quicker Bowls Cont...
As an overview the format of Quicker Bowls included:
8 week season commencing Sunday March 26. (1st round played twice so every club has 2 home games);
9 players per club - triples format;
Every player must alternate in the positions of Lead, Second and Skip;
If a club does not alternate a player in all three position during the match, will forfeit all match day points. This includes all rinks points and shots;
3 games of 8 ends against each club per day;
Games commence at 12.45pm (late arrival etc. as per BV pennant rules);
Skipper places jack and directs lead to place mat.
It would be great to get two teams up next year to allow more members to experience this enjoya- ble format for themselves. But don't take our word for it—give it a go if the opportunity comes around next year.
Thanks to Faye Mays and Adrian Beales for having the foresight in recognising the value in being involved in a new competition such as this. I know there are quite a few new members better for the experience.
