COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Title: Contemporary Affairs: World & Bangladesh

Course Code: JMC 204 Credit: 3 Total Marks: 100 Course Description

This course is designed to shed light on the following areas: Recent development on the political, social, economic and cultural issues and crises in Bangladesh and the world. The course contents thus may change on the basis priorities as the time demands. .

Course Objectives: After completing this course, the students will be able to:

 Apprehend major incidents and crises in the modern world including Bangladesh

 Demonstrate analytical ability on the current issues in national and international politics, economy, trade, environment, health and armed conflicts

 Understand the functions and role of major national and international institutions, NGOs and INGOs etc.

Learning outcomes Course Contents

Students will be able to:

 Assess the past which laid foundation of the current international crises

Understand the complexities in global politics

Evaluate the historical backgrounds of the present-day Bangladesh

Assess the past in Bangladesh politics and economy

Backgrounds:

 A historical overview of the current international crises

 World War I and World War II

 Cold War

 Post-Partition politics in East Pakistan

 Bangladesh’s struggle for Liberation

 Post-Independence politics and economy in Bangladesh

Students will be able to:

 Understand the nature of Middle East crisis and its impacts on international crisis

 Evaluate the East-West relation during the post-cold war period

 Assess the relations between South Asian neighbors, particularly India and Pakistan

 Assess the role of China in global trade

 Evaluate the Bangladesh economy and its current challenges and prospects

 Evaluate the political crisis in Bangladesh and its relations with neighbors and the world

 Assess the current social crises in Bangladesh

 The rise of terrorism

 Politics in South Asia: India- Pakistan relations

 Emergence of China as economic powerhouse

 Bangladesh’s relation with its neighbors

 Environment: Global Warming and Climate Change

 Impacts of climate change on Bangladesh

 Current public health issues: Local and Global

 Role of different international institutions including the United

 Assess the impacts of global warming

 Assess the current public health issues

 Assess the role of various international issues in shaping the world order
