Rationale:
To enable the students with necessary knowledge and skill on different engineering materials such as brick, sand, cement, steel, concrete and other construction materials to know their properties so that quality of these materials will be ascertained. Students will be able to know how to select an appropriate material for a good construction work.
Objectives:
The objective of this course is to provide knowledge and make experience on engineering materials to be selected in construction works. It will help to make construction properly fulfilling the design requirements.

Upon completion of this course students should be able to 1. Property of construction materials
2. Appropriate quality of materials for construction 3. Availability and selection of materials
4. Process of construction with the materials 5. Maintaining quality of construction:
Course Content:
Introduction: selection and use of engineering materials. Bricks: manufacturing, drying, burning, characteristics, tests, classification and uses. Lime: Type, uses, tests and lime concrete. Cement:, composition, manufacture, properties and tests of port land cements. Sand: Cement concrete: tests and design of concrete mix. Iron and steel: Ores, types, properties, uses, manufacturing and quality control.
Timber: Definition, wood structure, volume measure, characteristics, defects, seasoning and timbers of Bangladesh. Miscellaneous materials: Tiles, plastics, iberglass, ferro-cement, paints and varnishes.

Grading for this course will be determined in accordance with the following weighting:
Class attendance --- 10 % Class Test: In-class written test in class 55 minutes --- 20 % Final Examination (Written test of 2 hours duration)--- 70 %
