CHAPTER I literature. In other words, literature works such as drama or play, film, novel and poem expose the human life. People have many ways to expressing their
feeling, imagination, creation and communication".
Then, the researcher may conclude that through literature people can express
all of their experiences and imaginations into a movie, poem or song. This affects
others by the works they created before.
There are many advantages that people take from literature. By reading
literature, people may get valuable and useful knowledge that has significance benefit
concerning the topic. By learning literature, people will also have wider insight and
wiser consideration in making decision. Moreover, literature is one of compulsory
subjects that have to be taken by the student of English Department of University of

In this study, the film is analyzed because as one of the literary works it offers
many messages and interesting story. Then, the researcher is interested in analyzing
Taken1 film because it tells a good a lesson in the real life. Taken1 film also
gives a lot of messages to the audience about real life. Taken1 film is also a kinds
of literary works which describes a real life that may happen in human s life. The
film tells about Kim as a victim of trafficking. Taken1 film was produced by Luc
Besson s EuropaCorp in 2008, with a Pierre Morel as a film director. Taken1 was a
2008 American action-drama film. The film was taking place in France and USA
Focus of the study in this research is trafficking. As it is known, in today s
modern life, human trafficking is not a strange problem. Like drugs and arms
trafficking, human trafficking is a market-driven criminal industry that is based on the
principles of supply and demand. Many factors make children and adults vulnerable
to human trafficking. One of the factors is the lack of awareness. Human traffickers
are those who victimize others in their desire to profit from the existing demand. That
is why we need to be aware of human trafficking. So, we can be more careful in
everywhere we go.
This film is not only interesting, but also useful to analyze; it is only focused
on investigating Kim as a victim of trafficking in this film. Kim shows us how to be a
victim in human trafficking. So, Kim may inspire everyone who watches this film.
1.2 Statement of Problem
Based on the background above, the statements of problems are formulated as

Taken1 ?
2. How did Kim become a victim of trafficking on Pierre Morel s film in
Taken1 ?
3. How did Kim solve her trafficking on Pierre Morel s film in Taken1 ?
1.3 Purpose of Study
The purpose of this study will be expressed as follows:
1. To find out why Kim became a victim of trafficking on Pierre Morel s film in
Taken1 .
2. To describe how Kim became a victim of trafficking on Pierre Morel s film in
Taken1 .
3. To expose how Kim solved her trafficking on Pierre Morel s film in
Taken1 .
1.4 Significance of Study
Every kinds of study have their own significance. From this study, it is hoped
that this study will bring some significance for English department students. First of
all, it is hoped this study will be able to help the readers in analyzing literature
especially film and it will make them more critical in learning human behavior.
Second, this study will provide description of how important our caution in
everywhere we go although they are friendly with us.
In addition, it is expected that this study will give support to the readers to
make further research about literature by using different cases. This study is also

the English department students, it is expected that the result of the study could
enrich their knowledge in analyzing the film.
1.5 Scope and Limitation
The scope of this study is Kim as the victim of trafficking in Taken1 film.
The limitation of this study namely; the reason Kim became the victim of trafficking,
the way Kim became a victim of trafficking, and how Kim solved his trafficking.
1.6 Definition of Key Terms
The purposes of giving the definition of key terms are to avoid
misunderstanding on the terms that exist in this research. The terms which necessary
to be defined are as follow;
1. Analysis is needs assessment getting information to solve the problems in
the corporation; going out and seeking opinions on optimals, actuals, feelings,
causes and solution. (Rosset, 2000:25)
2. Kimis one of character that analyzed in this study.
3. Victim is a person who suffers from a destructive or injurious action or
agency or someone who has been harmed, injured, or killed as the result of a
crime (Macmillan, 2002).
4. Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt
of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion,
of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of
vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments to achieve the consent
of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation

6. Film is a series of moving pictures with sound that you can watch at the
cinema or at home. In other words, film is a form of entertainment that enacts
a story by a sequence of images giving the illusion of continuous movement.

To sum up, this chapter has already highlighted the introduction of the study that
consists of background of the study, statement of problems, purpose of the study,
significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, and definition of key
terms.
In order to expand the information in this present study and to give more clear
theoritical overview, chapter two will discuss about the review on the literature
namely; literature, kinds of literature, film, types of film, element of film, victim, the
definition of human trafficking, the purpose of human trafficking, the causes of
human trafficking, the effect of human trafficking, and the overcome of human
