CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter contains the introduction of the study, problems of the study,

objective of the study, scope and limitation, and definitions of key terms.

1.1 Background of the Study

“Mothers hold their children’s hand for moment and their heart for

lifetime”. From the quotation, it can be understood that parents have the good role

to nurture their children, especially a mother. The parents nurture children with

their actions and their feelings. In order for children to develop in all aspects, the

parents must have supported in all areas.

Mother is a unique position in influencing her children’s growth. From this

adaptation, the children’s growth depends on their mother’s personality. The

mother’s personality in nurturing their children can change how the children face

their life. The children know how to express their feeling, thought, and emotion

because they are nurtured by their parents.

According to John literature is ideas, feelings, views, reasoning, and other

thoughts in language (1966:573). Another statement says that literature is a

language in which the various elements and components of the text are brought

into a complex relation (Jonathan, 1997). It means that literature is related to our

life. It describes cases and the things that can happen in societies’ life, humans’

(14)

Generally, most readers have their own ideas of what literature is. Some of

them say that literature is an imaginative thing that gives enjoyment, experience,

and knowledge. Besides they get enjoyment when they read, they get some

experiences like understanding other people’s cultures. Sometimes, it is possible

to get knowledge from reading because as the readers know the readers get

knowledge while they read a book. It also occurs in reading literary works to

understand or to get knowledge. The readers can read literature in some ways

because there are many kinds of literature such as prose, drama, and poems. The

author can make character freely as she or he wants and every character has

personality which makes it different from others.

Everyone has a different personality. The person with a “good” personality

is one who impresses others with his or her ability to get along well with people.

However, someone who has a “bad” personality will not be like that. Personality

is the dynamic and organized set of characteristics possessed by a person that

uniquely influences his or her cognitions, motivations, and behaviors in various

situations (Richard, 2000).

By over time, parents’ personality in nurturing children can affect their

children’s behaviors. It depends on how the parents nurture their children. There

are a lot of environmental factors which will be faced by children; social-class

environment, school environment, family environment, etc. “One of the most

important environmental factors is the influence of the family (Collins et al.,

2000; Halverson & Wampler, 1997; Maccoby, 2000).” It means that parents’

(15)

3

Thus, the parents’ personality in nurturing children plays an important role in

children’s behaviors.

Nurturing children is important because the parents serve as the social

relationship to shape the children’s socialization. However, the parents’

personality is important to mold children especially for single parent. In a

single-parent family only one single-parental figure serves as the agent of socialization through

discipline or direct tuition or by acting as a model (E.Mavis & Ross, 1979). Thus,

the single mother’s personality in nurturing children may affect the development

of children.

The previous study related with personality was done by Rizal

Septendrianto (2007) An Analysis of Miss Marple’s Personality in “They Do It

with Mirrors” Novel by Agatha Christie. In his study, he describes the

characteristic of main character which also deals with personality of main

character focus on Miss Marple’s personality influences toward her life.

There are many potential factors that are involved in shaping a personality.

These factors are usually seen as coming from heredity and the environment. Both

of them give contribution to personality so as a result of social interaction in

which people live. And also there are always unique situations and interpersonal

events that help to shape our personality.

As a student of English Department who is interested in literature, the writer

choose “For One More Day” Novel, written by Mitch Albom, the story is centered

on the relationship between mother and children because she assumes that the

arranges this thesis. The writer hopes, the readers reveal how the main character

get change her personality in detail.

1.2 Statements of the Problems

Based on the background of the study in the preceding discussion, the

following research questions are formulated:

a. What are the mother’s personality in nurturing her children in “For One More

Day” Novel by Mitch Albom?

b. What are the effects of mother’s personality in nurturing children toward her

child in “For One More Day” Novel by Mitch Albom?

1.3 Objectives of the Study

In line with research question stated previously, the objectives of this study

are to find out what the mother’s personality is and the effects of mother’s

personality in nurturing her child in “For One More Day” Novel by Mitch Albom.

1.4 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is centered on the personality of the main character because the

personality is the basic of the writer’s idea. Therefore, she limits the problem on

the personality of mother in nurturing her second child.

1.5 Definition of the Key Terms

To make the study clear and to avoid confusions in understanding this study,

the writer presents several definitions of key terms:

1. Personality refers to an individual’s relatively permanent character.

2. Novel is an extended fictional prose narrative.

(17)

5

4. Nurturing Children means the care and attention given to children that are

growing or developing by their parents.
