1 A. Background of the Study

One Day is an international best seller romantic novel created by David Nicholls, an English writer. This novel was first published by Hodder and Stoughton General Division on June 11, 2009 in United Kingdom. In One Day novel contains of 448 pages (23 chapters), it is a wonderful and moving

love story which takes place over in the late twentieth century to early twenty-first century. This novel are not only tell about true love story, but also tells about friendship and career. Each chapter in this novel covers the lives of male and female friendship between Emma and Dexter over twenty years that turned into love. David Nicholls has adapted this novel into a film with the same title One Day, was released in August 2011.

now are three novels namely; Starter for Ten (2003), The Understudy (2005) and One Day (2009).

This story began when two people (Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew) met for the first time on the night of their college graduation from Edinburg University on July 15, 1988. They spent that night together, talking about their future and their dreams. It was a memorable night where the next day, they must go to their separates ways, continue their life and realize their dreams. Emma wants to improve the world and start to write, while Dexter wants to go around the world, drinking and hooking up with women. Since that unforgettable night, they decided to continue their friendship and meet every year on the same date. Each chapter in this novel tells the story of one day of their meetings over 20 years.

Such a promise they have made, they will meet again in the next year on July 15 in London, Dexter has become a successful television presenter while Emma has become a waitress. They shared stories about their life, love, and career. They always give support each other to be better. Their friendship are kept going in the next year despite in the different place, Emma often writes letter to Dexter just to ask about his condition or share stories about her daily life, but Dexter always underestimates and does not care about her stories. Sometimes Dexter also calls Emma to talk and take off their miss.

a drinking and drug problem because of his career collapsed. The friendship between Emma and Dexter are growing difficult, Emma constantly hurt by Dexter who attempts to hide his feeling to Emma then Emma breaks up the friendship after being treated rudely by Dexter at their last meeting in a restaurant. They eventually meet again at the wedding of Emma’s former

roommate and decided to make friends again. At that time, Dexter invited Emma to his wedding with Sylvie, who is pregnant. Emma felt disappointed to hear that. Since that time she begins to write to overcome her feeling.

Soon later, it became like inverted between Emma and Dexter because of their life and career are opposed to their early life. Emma who originally is not confident girl and previously had worked as a waitress and a teacher, now she has become a famous writer, while Dexter who originally is a successful television presenter, now he has become unemployed after his broken career. Dexter has been divorced from his wife who was having an affair with his friend and he was busy taking care of his daughter. When Dexter visited Emma in Paris, he realized that Emma was a woman who loved and cared for him over the years. For the first time, Dexter ventured to tell his feeling to Emma and she is willing to accept Dexter with his current life.

Dexter felt very upset and depressed, he began to drink again and make confusion in bars. Finally, he woke up from his suffering by the support from his friend, his ex-wife, his father and his daughter. The next year, he travels with his daughter to Edinburg where he and Emma met and climb the same mountain together that they climbed many years ago. Dexter continued his life by imagining the wonderful memories with Emma.

There are many pros and contras opinion about this novel from the reader. Positive response come from Lees Wammes in his blog, he said that he enjoyed this novel a lot, he found the beginning a bit slow going but after a while, this novel turned out to be the exact sort of book for him. On the other hand, there are different opinion come from Lennart Wennberg in his website, he states that it is not the best novel he ever read, he don’t think that he would be reading it a

One Day novel by David Nicholls has become a best seller novel. It

novel to surpass the one million print sales mark since Nielsen BookScan records began in 1998. The February 2010 published mass market edition of the book sold 52.142 copies at UK booksellers last week and tops the Official UK Top 50 ahead of the more recent film tie-in edition (39,937 copies sold). One Day novel won a literary awards in Exclusive Books Boeke Prize (2010) and Galaxy National Book Award for Book of the Year (2011). This novel also turned into a film with the same title One Day was released in August 2011. The film was directed by Lone Scherfig and starring by Anne Hathaway (as Emma Morley) and Jim Sturgess (as Dexter Mayhew).

One Day is a wonderful and moving love story which takes place over

in the late twentieth century to early twenty-first century. There are four reasons the researcher is interested in studying this novel.

First, this novel is very interesting to study because of the difference in character between the two main characters in the novel which fell in love. This novel describes the changing character of the two main characters from a young person into adulthood in dealing the problem of life over 20 years. It’s made the researcher wants to review the personality development of the main character in this research.

Second, the researcher is very interested about the story of this novel because it is very emotional and complicated. Both of main characters in this novel are best friend who love each other but they don’t want to reveal their

This novel covers the story of happiness, sadness, climax and surprising ending that was unthinkable by the readers. So, this study is crucial to be conducted.

Third, the researcher is interested in setting of the story which takes place over in the late twentieth century to early twenty-first century in the UK. It can make the readers feel curios about the portray of life at that time in UK.

The last is about writing style. The writing style of this novel is very captivating, the author gives a detailed description of faces, characters, places and events of the time, so it can creates imagination of the readers.

Based on these reasons above, the researcher will analyze One Day novel using psychoanalytic. Therefore, the researcher is interested in

conducting this research entitled “DEXTER’S PERSONALITY

In this study, the researcher focuses this study in analyzing on Dexter’s personality development as reflected in One Day novel using psychoanalytic. D. Problem Statement

Based on the research background above, the problem of this study can be determined as follows:

Based on the problem statement above, the objectives of this study are as follows:

G. Research Method 1. Type of the Study

In this study or research the researcher applies qualitative research. Qualitative study is the study of the fact that involves individual behavior and the result of the study cannot be fact using numbers in analyzing. 2. Object of the Study

The object of the study is One Day novel written by David Nicholls published in 2009. It is analyzed by using Psychoanalytic Approach.

3. Type of the Data and the Data Source

The type of data in this study is a text that consists of words, phrases and sentences. There are two data sources in this study. They are primary data source and secondary data sources.

a. Primary Data Sources

The primary data source of the study is One Day novel which is written by David Nicholls and first published in 2009.

b. Secondary Data Sources

4. Technique of the Data Collection

The method the researcher uses to collect data is both documentation by collecting and recording the primary and secondary source, library research by summarizing, paraphrasing and wording. The researcher uses note taking as technique of data collecting. The researcher takes the following steps such are:

a. Intensive Reading.

The researcher intensively and repeatedly reads the script of the novel until it is understood completely.

b. Identification.

After the novel is thoroughly understood, it is read once more accompanied with identification step.

c. Hand Writing.

The marked parts of the scripts as the result of identification are then written down on a card and given a certain code as the data to be analyzed.

d. Giving Description.

The cards that have been encoded are given a sufficient description based on the researcher’s interpretation guided by the theories.

e. Verification.

5. Technique of the Data Analysis

In analyzing the data, the researcher applies a descriptive technique. The steps taken by the researcher in analyzing the data are as follows: The first is analyzing the data based on its structural elements. Focus will be paid on the structural analysis of the novel. The second step is analyzing the data based on Psychoanalytic perspective. Focus will be paid on the meaning of personality development.
