II. Narrative Text

Is a text to tells a story and teach us about someone else's

experience. Or to amuse, entertain and to deal with actual or vicarious experience in different ways.

General Structure:

- Orientaton

This is the beginning of the story where everything is

established (who, what, when, where). This part introduces characters and / or sets the scene.

- Complication

This is the problem that causes the story, to start. Why did the events occur,the way that they did. In this part, the main character is faced to a problem.

- Resolution

This is where the complication ( or problem ) is solved.This part tells how the problem is resolved, for better or worse.

Structure:

- Using the past tense.

- Usually preceded by an adverb of time like a long time ago, once upon a time, or an adverb of place such as in a faraway land, in a very quite village.

- Using conjunctions as then, after that, before.

Example:

Read the text and answer questions 6- 10.

The Story of the Smart Parrot

A man in Puerto Rico had a wonderful parrot. There was no another parrot like it.

It was very, very smart. This parrot would say any word-except one. He would not say the name of the town where he was born. The name of the town was Catano.

Fried Potatoes

Ingredients

 4 potatoes

 1 tablespoon olive oil

 1 onion, chopped

 1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped

 2 tablespoons olive oil

 1 teaspoon salt

 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Steps

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add potatoes and cook until tender but still firm, about 15 minutes.

2. Drain the potatoes and cut them into 1/2 inch cubes when they are already cool.

3. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium high heat. Add onion and green pepper. Cook about 5 minutes stirring often, until soft. Transfer to a plate and set aside.

4. Pour remaining 2 tablespoons of oil into the skillet and turn heat to medium-high.

5. Add potato cubes, salt, paprika and black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are browned about 10 minutes.

6. Stir in the onions, green peppers and parsley and cook for another minute. Serve hot.

An Elephant

An elephant is the largest and strongest animals. It is a strange looking animal with its thick legs, huge sides and backs, large hanging ears, a small tall, little eyes, long white tusks and above all it has a long noise, the trunk.
