CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This introduction provides an overview of this study of moral values found in “3 Idiots” movie. This chapter includes the background of the study, statement of the

problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of key terms.

1.1Background of Study

Studying literature is one of the exciting activities that gives us some new experiences because it contains human feelings, human life, love, etc. Whereas Stableford (2005:10) stated that literature means the productions of written works having excellence of form of expression and dealing with ideas of permanent interest.

Darma (1995: 105) stated that literature is identical with moral. It is said to be identical because it also learns about human being who always issue an appeal for the reader to appreciate moral norms. From that statement, we clearly know that a good literary work is a work that gives a message on doing good things to the readers that is “moral”.

Bocheti (2000: 121) stated that moral is a part of philosophy, if we talk about moral, we should remember in “the bad or the good”. Moral has a certain obligation

to search to the measurement of truth. It is supported by Bartens (1993: 7) who stated that “ethnics or moral contains values and norms that become guidance for one’s or

group of people in organizing their behavior.

From all of the explanations above, we can conclude that moral values in literature represent action or utterance of the character in the literary work that is composed by three elements which teach and guide the reader or the audience to live a better life. In other word, the content of the work of literature can be the source of moral education.

As human beings, we need an entertainment to make us better and get satisfaction. The entertainment can be taken from many forms such as; reading, watching TV or movies and listening music. We understand that through those forms we can get the description of the social life of certain time and we are able to get information or knowledge from many kinds of human characters. It happens because that forms are not only as an entertainment but also has a power to compare between reality and fiction or imagination.

Generally, there are several kinds of literary work in written material, namely; drama, poetry and novel. Drama contains of setting, plot, character, theme, and so on, it has similarity structure with movie. Cook (2007: 87) defines movies (also known as films or motion pictures) as a type of communication which uses moving pictures and sound to tell stories or help people learn about new ideas. People in every part of the world watch movies that tell stories as a type of entertainment; a way to have fun. Most movies are made so that they can be shown on big screens at cinemas or movie theaters.

Along with Cook, Cosseti (1999: 73) stated that movie is cultural artifacts created by specifics cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating- or indoctrinating- citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some films have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue. It is clearly explained that movie is the easy media of literary work that not only gives us many information and knowledge from many kinds of human characters in certain time but also it can be an entertainment to the audience.

up to one hundred minutes. And the fourth is the movies produced because there are several purposes, e.g. profit company movies which made as the tool to help the presentation of a company.

There are many types of movies. Drama movies tell fictional stories about people. Action movies show fictional stories about chase and fight. Western movies tell fictional stories about cowboys living in the western United States in the 1800s. War movies tell fictional stories about wars or battles. Animation movies use cartoon images made with pens or by using computers to tell fictional stories (Cook, 2007:94).

Based on the statement above, we can conclude that movie is the art actualization of a society on the development of the era that has been recording a number of cultural elements where the theme raised in the movie is not far from the story about the individual and social problems in community. Although there are many changes and developments, both from the technology used and the themes raised, the film or movie still chosen by some people as a way to have fun and enjoy the literary work.

Some researchers have focused their analysis on moral value taken from whole events of a story of drama (Yakub, 2002: 4). In this thesis, the writer tries to focus her analysis on the moral value in the big wave drama by Pearl. S Bucks that are only based on the main character’s reflection. The writer assumes that the main character’s

more knowledge of moral value that are state implicitly in the story of drama so that they can understand the moral value in their life deeply.

In this study, the researcher chose movie to be analyzed because she assumes that movie is the easy media of literary work that gives us many advantages in several aspects, such as; individual aspect that is we can get the lesson or message from movie, social aspect likes getting many information and new knowledge from many kinds of human characters. And the important thing is educational aspect that still consists of both of those aspect but in this aspect we will get more lessons or messages that show the educated side.

1.2Statement of Problem

Based on the background of the study presented above, the problems that will be investigated are stated as follows:

1. What are the moral values found in “3 Idiots” movie by Rajkumar Hirani?

2. What is the contribution of “3 Idiots” movie to the audience?

1.3Purpose of Study

The purpose of this study is to find out the answer of the problems which have been stated. The purposes are formulated as follows:

1. To know the moral values in “3 Idiots” movie by Rajkumar Hirani

2. To identify the contribution of “3 Idiots” movie to the audience.

1.4Significance of Study

In accordance with teaching and learning activity, firstly, the writer expects that this study is able to encourage the readers, especially the students of English Department to pay more attention to literature.

Finally, the result of this study is expected to be used as a model in doing future literary research, especially in analyzing a movie.

1.5Scope and Limitation

There are many things in “3 Idiots” movie that can be analized, but the researcher just focused on the main characters’ moral value. movie as the scope of this study. Because of limited time, the researcher limits the subject of her study only on the audience who ever watched this movie and they are students of university.

1.6Definition of Key Terms

The definition of key terms in the research is aimed at avoiding misunderstanding the terms which exist in the research. The terms that are necessary to be defined as follows:

− Analysis is a specific method devised for sampling and analyzing messages from

the media and other recorded materials, such as literature, famous people’s

− Moral is a part of philosophy. If we talk on moral, we should remember in “the bad” or “the good”, moral has a certain in obligation to search the measurement

of truth. (Bocheti, 2000: 119).

− Values are the deepest and the most meaningful human feeling. Values are

chosen, not imposed. The person holding particular value is proud of it, it is manifested in behavior. If a feeling is not supported in action, it is not a value. (Warren 1980:256).

− Moral Value is the case that experiences that dignity of whole self and the

equality of the persons before the moral law. It is something that every human being has an idea of how human he wants to in his life (Muslimah, 2006).

− “3 Idiots” is the title of the movie.

− Movie is cultural artifacts created by specifics cultures, which reflect those
