1.1 Background of the study
Human being have been familiar with arts in daily life. Among the arts are dance, music, or literature. Eagleton (1996:1) says that literature is imaginative writing in the sense of fiction writing which is not literally true. Literature is divided into several subjects, they are poetry, drama, fiction and non fiction . In this thesis, the writer focuses on a fiction, especially film.
Film is a multimedia narrative form based on a physical record of sounds and moving pictures. Film is also a performed genre in the sense that it is primarily designed to be shown in a public performance (Jahn, 2003).
Film is one of the literary works. By film we can learn literary work such as: racism, struggle, rebellion, and personality changes. In this study, the writer will focus on personality changes.

In this thesis, the writer wants to show the personality changes of the main character in the novel. ”A Walk to Remember” is unforgettable novel, this novel shows unusual love between the main characters. The main characters have different backgrounds of family and life. Based on this fact there is a big distance between them. So that, this novel is rich with the challenges from the main characters to proof their love.
In this thesis, the writer is interested in analyzing “Despicable Me” film, because this film has many viewers that already watched this film so this film become well-known. Besides that, “Despicable Me” film shows the great villain who has bad attitude, but never gives up to do something. " Despicable Me" characters are whimsical and the film itself is action packed and sometimes really humorous. It makes this film become popular in the world.
Film has some elements, such as plot, conflict, characterization, and subject matter. In this thesis, the writer wants to show the personality changes of the main character in the film.
Based on the reason above the writer is interested in this film, besides that she is interesting to learn about personality, especially about a personality changes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem

1. What are the changes in Gru’s personality?
2. What is the effect of the changes of Gru’s personality changes toward himself?
3. What factors have influenced Gru’s personality changes?
1.3 Purpose of the Study
Concerning with problems above, the purposes of the study are: 1. To find out what are the changes of Gru in his personality.
2. To describe the effect of the changes of Gru’s personality toward himself. 3. To know the factors that influenced Gru’s personality changes.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The result of this study is expected to be an additional resource, adding and enlarging the literature. And also the students of English Department are expected to know and understand study about literature, she wants to make students interested to watch film, because recently many students are more interested in watching film, whereas film gives them more education and knowledge. In addition, it is to make the students have a good understanding about literary works, especially on the personality change.
1.5 Scope and Limitation

Therefore, the writer scopes her research to focus on character and personality of “Despicable Me” film, especially personality changes. Meanwhile, the limitation of this study is the main character of “Despicable Me” film namely Gru.
1.6 Definition of Key Terms
The writer presents several definitions of key terms, which are related to the study to make it more understandable.
1. Film is a motion picture which requires convention and has abilities to change the setting quickly and sound effect dramatically, so that the viewers are satisfied without sitting in front of the stage (Schmidt, Bogarad, and Crocket, 2006: 1418). 2. Personality Change is necessarily moving through development stages, each of which is earmarked by a particular psychosocial crisis. Depending on the manner in which people resolve these crises, their personality development will proceed in either a favorable or an unfavorable direction (Erikson in Hjelle and Ziegler, 1992 : 25)
3. Despicable Me is the title of the film discussed in this research.
