1 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter gives the readers the information of background of study,

statement of problems, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and

limitation, and definition of key term.

1.1Background of study

Language is a very essential thing in our society. It is needed in order to

communicate with other people in the society and as the connection to make a

good relationship which each other. Wardaugh (in Sabilah), Language is a system

of arbitrary verbal symbol which member community used as a means of

communication to interact and express their ideas, feeling and thought, (2001: 1).

Most people know that language has always developed and changed time

after time. According to Fromkin, language is the source human life and power,

(2003: 3). In other words, language as a social possession that depend on each

other to interact communicate, share the ideas, and transfer the thought or to get

the information.

One of the linguistic branches is called sociolinguistics. Sociolinguistics is

the study of language in relation to society. Hudson (in Sabilah), said that it

investigates the relationship between language and society with a goal of better

understanding of the structure of the language and how the language functions

(12)

2

because language is what the member of particular society use for

communication. When people learn sociolinguistics, it cannot be separated from

language variation. It is the existence of observable differences in the way a

language is used in a speech community. This language also as an indication of

language situation and reflect purposes, topic, norms, and modes of language.

Language variation is created to make the language more unique and interesting.

The development of this language is influenced by the society itself, so they create

many kinds of language variation. One of the language variations is slang.

Slang is an informal style of language. People use their language in

different ways, depending on the circumstances. According to Trask, Slang

expressions are usually introduced by the members of particular social group; they

may remain the property of that group and serve as a badge of group identity, or

they may instead become much more widely known and used (1999: 279). Slang

like fashion in clothing or popular music, changes quite rapidly. Fromkin stated

The groups used slang to communicate each other in order to express their

communicate with their group. Slang also has unique and familiar terms that are

easier to understand. In our country Indonesia, some communities also use slang

to differentiate then from others.

One of the communities is MBR (Medewi Board Riders) in Medewi beach.

The researcher is interested in the study on slang used by Medewi Board

Riders in Medewi beach because the researcher knows that today this slang is an

effective language among surf rider and wider society. Surfing has its own slang

such as "tubular", "radical", and "gnarly" are associated with both. One of the

main terms used by surfers around the world would be the word, "Stoked". This

refers to a mixed feeling of anxiety and happiness towards the waves breaking.

1.2Statement of the Problems

Based on the background of the study above, the researcher wants to

discuss the problems that stated below:

1. What slang words are used by Medewi Board Riders?

2. What are the meanings of slang used by Medewi Board Riders?

3. What the word-formations that are used by Medewi Board Riders?

1.3Purpose of the Study

1. To know the slang words used by Medewi Board Riders in Medewi beach.

2. To know the meaning of slang words used by Medewi Board Riders in

medewi Beach.

3. To know the word- formations that are used by Medewi Board Riders in

(14)

4 1.4Significance of the Study

The result of this research is expected to add and enlarge the variation of

sociolinguistics research in education. The research can be used to provide the

English department students and sociolinguistic learners with the information

related with the slang. The researcher also hopes that this study may be useful for

the lectures of English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Malang to

give the real examples of slang used in daily activity.

From the explanation above, it can be concluded that this research is may

be useful to enlarge the knowledge of the students who study about sociolinguistic

and it necessary for the lectures too.

1.5Scope and Limitation

The scope of this research is slang. Meanwhile, the limitation of this

research is about slang words and formation of slang that used by Medewi Board

Riders in Medewi beach.

1.6Definition of Key Term

In order to avoid misunderstanding in terms and contents of the topic in

this research, it is necessary for the researcher to define the key terms in this

research:

1. Analysis addresses the identification of essential features and systematic

description of interrelationships among them- in short, how things work.

In terms of stated objectives, analysis also may be employed evaluative to

address questions of why a system is not working or how it might be made

(15)

5

2. Slang expressions are usually introduced by the members of particular

social group; they may remain the property of that group and serve as a

badge of group identity, or they may instead become much more widely

known and used (Trask, 1999: 279).

3. Surfing is a surface water sport in which a person (the surfer) rides a board

(the surfboard) on the crest of a wave as it carries the surfer towards the

shore. Two major subdivisions within stand-up surfing are long boarding

and short boarding, reflecting differences in surfboard design including

surfboard length, and riding style (www. wikipedia. org/ surfing).

4. Medewi Board Riders is local surfer team of Medewi beach that located in

west Bali.

5. Word Formation Process is the study of the processes whereby new words

come into being in English seems relatively straightforward (Yule, 1996;
