T h i s s i t u a t i o n i s estimated t o continue i n t h e f u t u r e . Factors c n t r i b u t e t o t h i s s i t u a t i o n come from t h e trend o f f r e e market and globalization as well as technology i m - provement t h a t produce s u b s t i t u t i o n
To face t h i s condition, the improvement o f e s t a t e co- modity production i s directed towards e f f i c i e n c y and
product q u a l i t y improvement, so i t can compete i n the i n - ternational market.
One e f f o r t i n r e a l i z i n g t h e o b j e c t i v e i s t h e i n t e g r a - t i o n o f biotechnology wether i n t h e plantation c u l t u r a l technique as well as i n the processing o f product, and reuse o f product waste.
The development o f biotechnology i n o i l palm t i s s u e c u l t u r e have been i n i t i a t e d which mass production. The some programs have been developed f o r t i s s u e c u l t u r e o f coconut, c o f f e e , cacao, and rubber, so i n the f u - t u r e t h i s technology i s expected t o commercially estab- l i s h e d .
Improvement o f product processing system u t i l i z i n g biotechnology a l s o has been i n the i n i t i a l stage and i s expected t o contribute t o a prospect f o r e s t a t e com- modity i n the f u t u r e . This i s not only t o increase the non-petrolium export commodity, but a l s o t o improve t h e well- being o f Indonesian farmers.
