Lambang UM berwujud lingkaran yang bermakna UM mengantisipasi perkembangan global. Pohon (kalpataru) warna hijau melambangkan kesadaran pentingnya wawasan kelestarian lingkungan hidup dalam penerapan iptek. Lengkung hijau menyerupai kaki melambangkan kelangsungan (kontinuitas) kelembagaan IKIP menjadi Universitas Negeri Malang. Bintang warna kuning melambangkan Pancasila sebagai falsafah bangsa dan negara. Simbolik UM berwarna kuning yang sekaligus mengesankan empat garis vertikal, melambangkan empat orientasi nilai, yaitu nilai keilmuan yang universal, nilai kebangsaan, nilai kemanusiaan, dan nilai kebudayaan dalam mewujudkan visi, misi, dan fungsi UM. Kuncup bunga berwarna kuning, terdiri atas tiga bagian dalam pelukan kalpataru, bagian kuncup yang mengarah ke atas melambangkan pendidikan generasi, bagian kuncup sebelah kanan dan kiri, melambangkan dua jenis program studi, yaitu kependidikan dan non kependidikan, ketiga bagian kuncup itu melambangkan tridarma perguruan tinggi.
The symbol of UM is set on a circle which signifies the university's focus on anticipating global development. The tree of life (the kalpataru) is depicted in green, symbolizing the awarenessof the importance of environment in the application of science and technology. The green curve resembling foot is a symbol of the institutional continuity of IKIP (Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Institute of Teacher Training and Education) which has been transformed into Universitas Negeri Malang (UM, State University of Malang). The yellow star is the symbol of Pancasila, the basic philosophy of the nation and the state. The letters of UM are designed in four tangential lines,to symbolize the four values orientation, that is the value of universal knowledge, the value of nationhood, the value of humanity, and the value of culture, in order to realize the mission, vision and function of UM. The yellow flower bud is designed in three parts under the protection of the Kalpataru tree, where the central upright part symbolizes the education of generations. The left and right petals symbolize the dual study programs : educational and non-educational, and the three petals of flower bud as a whole represent the Three Principles of Higher Education Institutions (Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi).

Logo UM: The Learning University terinspirasi oleh tiga lingkaran bertautan. Tiga lingkaran yang bertautan melambangkan proses belajar yang berlangsung terus-menerus di Universitas Negeri Malang. Pertautan antarlingkaran membangun tiga garis lengkung bertautan yang membentuk inisial UM tersebut menyiratkan hubungan yang erat dan positif dari perjumpaan antara sivitas akademika (mahasiswa, dosen, karyawan Universitas Negeri Malang) dan masyarakat.
Konsep Dasar Logo UM
Logo UM : The Learning University is inspired by three interlocking circles. The three interlocking circles symbolize the continous learning process in State University of Malang. The three interlocking arcs which form a stylized initial of UM's abbreviation exemplify the closely related and positive relation in the exchange among the members of academic community (student, lecturers, and staff of the State University of Malang), and the community.

Tiga garis lengkung bertautan yang membentuk inisial UM juga melambangkan tiga jalur kontribusi Universitas negeri Malang terhadap perkembangan global,nasional, regional, dan lokal, yaitu melalui (1) pendidikan, (2) penelitian, dan (3) penerapan ipteks kepada masyarakat.
Karakter Warna
The three interlocking arcs or curves which form the UM's initials also symbolize the three channels of UM's contribution to the local, regional. National and global development. Through: (1) education, (2) research, and (3) application of science and technology in the society.
The Learning University memiliki dua makna: (1) sebagai learning organization dan (2) sebagai learning resource. Sebagai learning organization, sistem organisasi UM mengedepankan aspirasi, pengembangan kepedulian, dan pengembangan kapabilitas bersama sehingga sistem organisasi UM dan unsur-unsurnya berfungsi sebagai organisme belajar yang terus-menerus belajar. Sebagai learning resource, UM memerankan diri sebagai sumber belajar, tempat belajar, media belajar, dan inspirator pembelajaran bagi mahasiswa, dosen, karyawan, serta masyarakat. Ini mengandung arti bahwa UM membuka akses seluas-luasnya sebagai tempat dan rujukan belajar bagi semua.

The Learning University has two meanings: (1) as a learning organization and (2) as a learning resource. As a learning organization, the organizational system of UM has to give priority to the aspiration, development, concern and mutual development of the capability so that UM's organizational system and its components can function as a learning organism which learns continuously. As a learning resource, UM plays a role as resources, vehicle, media and inspiration for the learning process of the students, lectururs, staff, functional personnel, and the society at large. This means that UM provides the widest access, possible as the place and point of reference of learning for all.
Terdapat 4 (empat) warna utama dalam desain brand name logo Universitas Negeri Malang, yaitu biru, hijau, kuning emas, dan biru.
Warna biru merupakan warna yang menarik dan menyenangkan. Biru melambangkan jiwa muda yang terus belajar untuk maju.
Warna hijau melambangkan pertumbuhan dan kehidupan. Hijau melambangkan kampus yang menjadi wadah bagi sivitas akademika untuk hidup & tumbuh.
Warna kuning emas melambangkan kejayaan dan energi. Keunggulan adalah hal utama yang akan terus diraih dengan semangat yang menyala.
Biru tua melambangkan stabilitas dan kedalaman. Dua hal yang esensial dalam penyelenggaraan pendidikan di sebuah perguruan tinggi.
Sky blue is an attractive and pleasing color, representing a youthful spirit that is eager to learn and progress.
Green is a color of growth and life. It represents the campus as a vehicle for the academic community to live and grow.
Golden is a color of nobility and energy. Excellence is the primary objective which will be endeavored with burning spirit.
Deep blue is a symbol of stability and depth. These two characters are essential for the provision of educational services in a higher education institution There are 4 (four) basic colors in the logo of UM brand name. They are sky blue, green, golden and deep blue.
SAMBUTAN REKTOR
Tidak banyak universitas di Indonesia yang dapat menyamai Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) dalam mem-berikan berbagai peluang kepada mahasiswanya. UM me-nawarkan layanan pendidikan kelas dunia dan seluruh mahasiswa kami sangat menikmati studinya dalam iklim akademik di lingkungan UM.
Para calon mahasiswa dapat leluasa memilih 52 program studi sarjana, 10 program studi diploma, dan 30 program studi pascasarjana, baik yang berupa program kependidikan maupun non-kependidikan, yang akan memberikan kualifikasi yang diakui secara nasional maupun internasional, baik bagi mereka yang menempuh gelar tunggal maupun gelar ganda. UM sangat memahami aspirasi para mahasiswa Indonesia dan mahasiswa internasional, dan menjamin mereka akan mendapatkan dukungan yang komprehensif dalam berbagai bentuk layanan yang diperlukan.

FOREWORD FROM THE RECTOR
Few universities in Indonesia can rival our capability to afford students multifarious opportunities that await them once they a part of our prided learning community. State University of Malang (henceforth referred to as UM) is a world-class education provider that helps the students strive in highly competitive academic atmosphere.Each year new entrants can choose from the available 52 undergraduate programs, 10 diploma programs and 29 programs.
We offer them the flexibility of academic system which allows them to pursue either educational or non-educational programs of study and gain nationally or internationally recognized qualifications. They can even combine these programs of study by opting for double-degree program. State University of Malang understands the expectations of national as well as international students and ensures they receive comprehensive support and a wide range of services.
