One day, a mouse deer was running away from a tiger. He came to a river and needed to cross it. He also saw a custard apple tree on the other side of the river and liked the fruit on the tree. But when the mouse deer looked into the river, it saw that there were a lot of crocodiles in it.
“Hey, all you crocodiles,” he said.” Come over here. King Solomon has ordered me to count all of you.”
The crocodiles started to swim towards the mouse deer.
“Now get in a line,” he said to them, “so that I can count you properly.”
Then he took a coconut shell and jumped onto the head of the first crocodile.
“One, two, three bang!” he said and gave a crocodile a tap on the head with the
coconut shell. Then he jumped onto the second crocodile and did the same. Soon, he crossed the river safely and jumped onto the bank.
“Ha,” he said to the crocodiles, “I only wanted to get away from the tiger, and I
wanted to eat custard apple. Now I have knocked all of you on the head with this coconut shell, you are a silly lot!”
This made the crocodiles very angry. “We will catch you!” they said. “When you come to get a drink, we will catch you!”
The mouse deer did not care. “I am clever, you will never catch me.”
