ABSTRACT

NUR HASSAN. Isabella Swan’s Motivation in Sacrificing Herself in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Sanata Dharma University, 2011.

This thesis examines one of Stephenie Meyer’s novels, Twilight. This novel is about a teenage girl of 17 years old named Isabella Swan. It starts from the moment when Bella moves to Forks, a place where her father, Charlie Swan, lives in. In that small town, Bella begins to recognize a handsome and mysterious boy, Edward Cullen. He is an interesting young boy that make Bella to be interested. At the beginning of the story, he is able to hide her real identity as a vampire. And then, Bella can know his factual identity as a cold ones. From that moment, Bella’s power of love starts to grow and it starts to show. She has to realize for the dangerous that would come to her if she tries to love him. Fortunately, Bella was described as strong young girl who never gives up to struggle, because she has great intention and motivation to be with Edward forever.

The study raises three problems to be examined. The first problem is how the main characters of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen are described in the story. The second is to find what Isabella Swan sacrifices to love Edward Cullen. The third is to know a form of Isabella Swan’s motivations to sacrifice herself.

In order to reach the objectives of the study, the study uses the library research method to collect data. The primary data are taken from Stephenie Meyer’s novel entitled Twilight. The secondary data are taken from sources related to the novel and the topic of this thesis.

ABSTRAK

NUR HASSAN. Isabella Swan’s Motivation in Sacrificing Herself in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight. Yogyakarta: Jurusan Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Sanata Dharma, 2011.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

The novel that the writer is going to analyze tells about the story of a teen-ager vampire-romance that is shown on the novel that is written by an author Stephenie Meyer. This is the first book of the Twilight series that she wrote. The beginning of the story is introducing seventeen-year-old Isabella "Bella" Swan, who moves from Phoenix, Arizona to Forks, Washington. Bella realizes her life is in danger when she falls in love with a vampire, named Edward Cullen.

In Twilight, there are several attractive and fantastic moments created by Stephenie Meyer such as when readers discover a couple of lovers who are supremely star-crossed and many other romantic stories describing both Bella and Edward. Bella admires a daring handsome man, Edward, and he returns her love. While Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust, she arouses in him, because he is a vampire. At any moment, the strong power of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. On the other hand, Bella would be rather to die than to be close to Edward. Because of the intensity of love that Bella has that support her to risk her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste and pure relationship.

(14)

because we can see the motivation of Isabella Swan, who played an important role, to sacrifice herself. Bella Swan’s main development as a character is her movement through adolescence to emotional and sexual maturity by finding her first love, Edward Cullen.

Bella is described as a strong emotionally character, as seen by the tears she cannot hide and control. However, she also has a strong intellectual side and takes on great determination when she reaches a specific decision in her life.

B. Problem Formulation

Based on the background of study, the writer wants to analyze about the character of Bella’s swan through her sacrifice for Edward. There are three major problems formulated as follows.

1. How are Isabella “Bella” Swan and Edward Cullen described? 2. What does Isabella Swan sacrifice to love Edward Cullen? 3. What is Isabella Swan’s motivation to sacrifice herself?

C. Objectives of the Study

To answer the problem formulation revealed in the previous part of this chapter, it is necessary for the writer to give some clarifications about what objectives of the study are. The first of the objective of the study is to find out how Stephenie Meyer describes the main character, Isabella Swan, in Twilight

(15)

Stephenie Meyer, tries to tell a unique romance story that happens between a human being and a vampire. The purpose of this study is to know more about Bella’s motivation to sacrifice herself and her effort to gain her true love. Therefore, to support the analysis the evidence must be found through the novel such as to know the characteristic of the main character, Isabella Swan, and to understand her role that is described in the novel.

The second objective of the study will find what Isabella Swan sacrifices to love Edward Cullen. This can also be used as a tool to identify the main reason that Isabella Swan dares to sacrifice herself for Edward Cullen. In fact, every people have unconscious dreams which lay inside their mine. On the other hand, we cannot realize about that, but it appears in our behavior and our action.

Every one has a strong motivation to do what he or she needs to have. Therefore, in this last objective of the study also wants to approve what is stated behind Bella’s mind and it appears in her action and mission to sacrifice herself. Then, the most important thing to know from this analysis is Isabella Swan’s motivation to do her choice.

D. Definition of Terms

(16)

perception to the readers about the terms used in the topic, there are two terms that is needed to be known in this definition of terms:

1. Character

In A Glossary of Literary Terms Seventh Edition, M. H. Abrams states that the character is the name of a literary genre; it is a short, and usually witty, sketch in prose of a distinctive type of person. The genre was inaugurated by Theophrastus, a Greek author of the second century B.C., who wrote a lively book called Characters. Characters are also the person presented in a dramatic or narrative work, who are interpreted by the reader as being endowed with moral, dispositional, and emotional qualities that are expressed in what they say the dialogue and by what they do the action. The grounds in the characters’ temperament, desires, and moral nature for their speech and actions are called their motivation (1999: 23).

X. J. Kennedy in an Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, and Drama, states that a character is an imagined person who inhabits a story−although that simple definition may admit to a few exceptions (1999: 60).

2. Motivation

THEORETICAL REVIEW

A. Review of Related Studies

Several theories and other works are very helpful for the writer to accomplish the study. There are some works that are related to Meyer’s novel

Twilight and others to finish the process of the study.

Stephenie Meyer is one of the most important living American writers. She was born in Connecticut on December 24, 1973. Twilight is her very first novel. The book was published in 2005. New Moon is the second book in the series which is published in 2006, Eclipse the third, and was published in 2007. The fourth book Breaking Dawn was released in August 2008 (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2769412/).

Stephenie Meyer is an American author best known for her vampire romance series Twilight. The Twilight novels have gained worldwide recognition and sold over 100 million copies globally, with translations into 37 different languages. Meyer is also the author of the adult science-fiction novel The Host. Meyer was the biggest selling author of both 2008 and 2009, having sold over 29 million books in 2008 alone, with Twilight being the best-selling book of the year (http://www.answers.com/main/reference.jsp).

(18)

odds, taking the risks, and learning how to survive and thrive in the times. Thomas Hine's remarkable contribution is a focused study and a glorious appreciation of youth that challenges us to confront our stereotypes, to rethink our expectations and to consider a new the lives of those individuals-some of them living under our roofs-who are, as always, our blessing, our bane, and our future. Teenagers occupy a special place in life. They are envied and sold to, studied and deplored. They seem to be growing up too fast, and always immature, they are barbarians at the gate-and our only hope for a better world. What, then, is this thing called "teenager"-this strong, troubling creature caught somewhere between the rock of youth and the hard place of adulthood (Hine, 1999: 305-314). That shows Isabella Swan’s attitude toward her teenager’s life into a great starting point of her motivations and struggles. She takes the risk, learning how to survive and thrive in times.

In the next point, Stephenie Meyer is the author of the popular Twilight

(19)

By considering several statements of study mentioned before, several important point can be drawn. The first is that the novel Twilight does not only give much opinions and values from the author, but also her responses. The second, Stephenie Meyer uses the characters such as Isabella Swan and Edward Cullen in her novel as a tool for her to represent his criticisms. The last, even the writer agrees with all points above, but the writer has her own opinion that makes special and different with the other research such as to observe the major and minor character and experiences of an extraordinary love story presented in the novel. In comparison with other works of young teenager’s character, Meyer has some purposes by showing the major character of Bella Swan as the life’s example of teenager to accomplish the struggles in achieving the motivation in sacrificing herself. The writer chooses to find the Meyer’s intention to analyze the main character’s motivation as a different teenager that will be the point to diverge the thesis from any other studies.

B. Review of Related Theories

(20)

1. Theory on Character and Characterization

One of the important elements in a work of literature is character. A character is an important factor in fiction. The term “character” might refer to the persons or figures in a work of literature. The theory of character states that the character brings a story in ways that conducts the emotional qualities, the moral judgment and also dispositional. Characters are also created with certain qualities. They are recognized by readers for their characteristics and characterization by the authors. The character of the work should be very useful to the work itself.

(21)

in a dramatic or narrative work but also a person who is described can make story alive.

According to Murphy in Understanding Unseens: an Introduction to English Poetry and the English Novel for Overseas Student, there are nine ways in which an author can present the characterization of characters in a literary work. Those nine ways are:

a. Personal Description

The author can describe a character by using the appearance and clothes. The reader will get only a visible look of a character, like parts of the body of the character and the clothes he or she wears (1972: 161).

b. Character as Seen by Another

The author can describe a character through the view, opinions, attitudes, and comments of the other characters. The reader will get the reflected image of the characters the author means (1972: 162).

c. Speech

The author can describe a character by giving readers an insight into the characteristics through the way he or she speaks and the language he or she uses. Here the reader enables to analyze from the sentences the character uses (1972: 164).

d. Past Life

(22)

that a character has when he has a particular characteristic or does something special (1972: 166).

e. Conversation of Others

The author can provide a clue about the character through the conversation of other people and what they say about him or her. Readers will learn that what others say about a character may reveal what kind of characters he or she is (1972: 167).

f. Reaction

The author can describe characteristics by showing how a character responds to various situations and events. The reaction may give a clue to what characteristics a character has (1972: 168).

g. Direct Comment

The author may give comments and descriptions on the characteristic of the character directly to readers. This becomes the best way to the readers to visualize the characteristics because they know what exactly the author wants to reveal (1972: 170).

h. Thoughts

(23)

i. Mannerism

The author can characterize a character through the mannerism, habit or idiosyncrasies. Those things may tell readers something about the character’s characteristics (1972: 172).

Murphy also states in Understanding Unseens: an Introduction to English Poetry and the English Novel for Overseas Student, there are several characters and personalities of the people in a novel. First of all let us consider how we get to know about people in real life. If for instance, we see people in the street or at a gathering we can learn something about them by their outward appearance, by the way they dress, walk, look, gesture and so on. If we are able to talk with a person at any length we can then get to know something about his opinions, the manner in which he expresses them and his voice and accent. We can also get to know a person through the eyes and opinions of other people, their wives, friends, employees, acquaintances. If we know a person for some length of time we get to know how he behaves toward us and toward others, and how he reacts to people, events and situations. Through personal contact, and also through other people, we can get to know something about the events and happenings of a person’s past life (1972: 161).

2. Theory on Motivation and Behavior

(24)

goal (Huffman and Vernoy, 1987: 364). We can know that motivation has an important point in people live because it can be a support for them to reach the goal or achievement. In the General Psychology, the motivation can pursue and supports someone to do something to achieve what he or she wants. To continue the functioning of an urge, one or two frustrating experiences is the evidence of a strong push for a person to attain a particular goal. Such kind of persistence that continues until success is achieved is the significant characteristic of motivation (Edward, 1997: 132-133). This theory confirms that a person must have a reason behind what he does. There are some urges to some actions in order to achieve their goals and fulfill the desire. They must have a desire that can be called as a motivation so that they do some struggle to achieve it.

The American psychologist, Abraham Maslow, in his book entitled

(25)

satisfied, people may still often (if not always) expect that a new discontent and restlessness will soon develop, unless the individual is doing what he is fitted for; (6) Curiosity and the need to understand; when all the above mentioned needs are met people would have other need and that is the need to satisfy their sense of curiosity and the need to understand things (1970: 39-57). In short, people have to see rather than to be blind.

People perform an action with a motivation. This motivation leads them to behave in their way to get some achievement. It would be impossible to discover motivation unless behavior was organized. It means that motivation cannot be observed if one does not perform series of behavior. Motivation makes people keep their effort to achieve their achievement, in order to prevent from losing the way to achieve the achievement. Motivation also makes people behave in a certain behavior that supports them in the process of getting the achievement. Therefore, motivation always influences people’s action in their life. According to David C. Edward in his book General Psychology, he states that motivation is an invented construct which describes certain aspects of behavior (1997: 49). To say that a certain motive is in operation, such as a need to be with others of the same species, directly implies that the behavior of that individual is directed towards satisfaction of this need state rather than others (1997: 50).

(26)

motivation and behavior is sometimes complex. A moderate level of motivation may have one effect an extreme level another. Antagonistic motives may produce a conflict. Some motives may be unconscious. It is only when we learn more about these complex effects of motivation that we will be able to understand human behavior (1964: 20). Motivation is also inferred from other aspects of behavior. The vigor, frequency, and speed of a response are sometimes an indication of motivation. The dominance of theme in a person’s conversation, fantasies, and dreams also suggests certain underlying motives. A person who talks and thinks of nothing but making money might be said to be strongly motivated in this direction. Inferring motivation from behavior, however, is difficult and, at times, misleading. This is because behavior is determined not only by motivation, but also by the present situation and past experience (1964: 11).

Still in his book, Edward J. Murray says that at any given time a person is motivated by a variety of internal and external factors. The strenght of each motive and the pattern of motives influence the way we see the world, the things we think about, and the actions in which we engage (1964: 9). We can understand these two varieties from the explanation mentioned before. Internal factor, it is from the inside of each individual (such as needs, desires, and interests) that activate, maintain, and direct behavior toward a goal. External factor, it is from the outside of each individual (such as pressures, demands, pursuits, and claims) that force, request and seek behavior toward goal.

(27)

general agreement that a motivation is an internal factor that arouses, directs, and integrates a person’s behavior. It is not observed directly but inferred from his behavior or simply assumed to exist in order to explain his behavior. Motivation is distinguished from other factors that also influence behavior, such as the past experience of the person, his physical capabilities, and the environmental situation in which he finds himself, although these other factors may influence motivation (1964: 8).

We might know that a person is motivated from his/her action to achieve what a person wants. People who are motivated usually will do a struggle and hard effort to achieve their desires, needs, and goals. This theory will be very useful to understand why a person does something. We also know the goals that a person wants by doing such things. They must have something behind their action and by this theory we can understand why people do that particular thing.

3. Theory on Love

(28)

other subject has been expressed in so much song, poetry, and prose. Without it the infant dies. Without it the adult becomes emotionally misshapen. It is a powerfull thing, but it is very unstable. Because of it we sometimes exhibit the very best within us, and sometimes it causes us to exhibit the very worst within us. In short, it is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the world (1983: 1).

To love and be loved is something beautiful. To be loved people sometimes always try to do anything to prove what serious people are. To show that people are really falling in love, people will sacrifice what they have with no thinking what are the consequences of it. Erich Fromm in The Art of Loving says that love is an activity, not a passive effect; it is a “standing in”, not a “falling for”. In the most general way, the active character of love can be described by starting that love is primarily giving, not receiving. Giving here does not mean “giving up” something, being deprived of or sacrificing. Erich Fromm intends to explain giving or sacrificing is the highest expression of potency (1956: 35).

Love is defined by Sadler in Living A Same Sex Life Before and After Marriage as a felling of attraction and a sense of self-surrender arising out of a need and directed toward an object that offers hope of gratification (1944: 134-135). Crooks and Baur cite that love is a special kind of attitude with strong emotional and behavioral components (1983: 196).

(29)

C. Theoretical Framework

Those theories above will be used to analyze the novel. This study uses library research method in collecting and analyzing the data. Besides using the novel, Twilight as the primary sources of data, this also uses the data from articles and books. The study focuses on the main character of the story. Thus, the review of theories is needed to answer the problems of the study.

In answering the problems formulated in the previous chapter, there are several theories which are needed, such as theory on character and characterization, theory on motivation, and theory on love.

The first theory is the theory on character and characterization is considered suitable as the means to answer the first question. By applying the theory the characterization of the main characters will be able to be described. This theory is considered significant since this study concerns on the characters in the novel.

The second theory is the theory on motivation. The use of this theory is to see the motivations that make the two main characters keep up their relationship. This theory also can help the writer to get deeper understanding why Bella wants to sacrifice herself.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

A. Object of the Study

The object of this study is the novel Twilight which was written by Stephenie Meyer, a novelist who was born in 1973. This novel was published originally in October 2005 by Little, Brown and Company, in New York. This novel contains 24 chapters with 498 pages. Twilight is Stephenie Meyer’s novel that gained her place as a novelist with teenager novel specification and won the prestigious MTV movie award as the best teenager novel author and the best teen novel, performed in the movie in June 2009.

The novel tells about the motivation of Isabella Swan in sacrificing herself to find her true love Edward Cullen who comes from a vampire family as his background. Edward really is not like the other boys. He can run faster than a mountain lion. He can stop a moving car with his bare hands and he has lived since 1918. Like all vampires, he is immortal. But he doesn't have fangs, and he doesn't drink human blood, though Edward and his family are unique among vampires in that lifestyle choice. Edward Cullen is an intelligent, good looking vampire who is trying to hide his secret but Bella always wants to know what it is, and she is ready for each consequence from her action.

(32)

Besides, her writings, including Twilight, have been translated into many languages. Twilight is known as the first sequel of Twilight Saga. Twilight is Stephenie Meyer’s very first novel. The book was published in 2005. New Moon

is the second book in the series which is published in 2006, Eclipse the third, and was published in 2007. The fourth book Breaking Dawn was released in August 2008. Twilight Sagabrings the story into various problems occurring in teenager. The proof is the novels are being filmed, starring the teenager actors and actress such as Robert Pattinson, Kirsten Stewart, and Taylor Lautner. All casts represent the novel story and the youth spirit.

B. Approach of the study

To gain the right conclusion of this study, the writer has to apply a suitable approach to analyze it. This approach will help the writer to reach the conclusion. Since the topic of the study deals with the motivation and love relationship, the writer uses psychological approach in analyzing the work. By applying this approach, the writer can understand character’s mind and behavior well. Psychology is a study of man’s life together with his mind and behavior (Rohrberger and Woods, 1971: 16-17).

(33)

views by an expressive view of the nature of literature. During the Romantic Period, we find widely practiced all three variants of the critical procedures (still current today) that are based on the assumption that a work of literature is correlated with its author's distinctive mental and emotional traits: (1) reference to the author's personality in order to explain and interpret a literary work; (2) reference to literary works in order to establish, biographically, the personality of the author; and (3) the mode of reading a literary work specifically in order to experience the distinctive subjectivity, or consciousness, of its author (1999: 248).

In Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, and Drama by Kennedy cite that modern psychology has had an immense effect on both literature and literary criticism. Psychological criticism is a diverse category, but it often employs three approaches. First, it investigates the creative process of the artist: what is the nature of literary genius, and how does it relate to normal mental functions? The second major area for psychological criticism is psychological study of a particular artist. Most literary biographies employ psychologicy to understand their subject’s motivations and behaviors. The third common area of psychological criticism is the analysis of fictional character (1999: 1947).

(34)

formulation. The psychological approach is used to explore the character, past experience, and the motivation of the main character, in his relationship with the minor character.

C. Method of the Study

The writer employed the library research as the method of the study. There were two types of sources used in this method. The first is the primary sources. For the study, the primary source was taken from Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight,

published by Little, Brown and Company, in 2005. The second was the secondary source. For this type, the writer read several books in order to help the writer answering the formulated problems. Besides, the writer browsed some information in relation with the novel Twilight from the internet. The theory on character and characterization, the theory on motivation, the theory on love and the ideas related to the character of Bella were taken from some books and books review.

There are several main sources that the writer used, such as: A Glossary of Literary Terms Seventh Edition by M. H. Abrams, an Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, and Drama by X. J. Kennedy, The Rise and Fall of The American Teenager by Thomas Hine, Understanding Unseens: an Introduction to English Poetry and the English Novel for Overseas Student by Murphy, Psychology in Action by Huffman, General Psychology by David C. Edward, Motivation and Personality Abraham Maslow, Motivation and Emotion by Edward J. Murray,

(35)

Living A Same Sex Life Before and After Marriage by Sadler, Our Sexuality Second Edition by Crooks and Baur, and The Mind and Heart of Love by M. C. D’Arcy.

There were several steps used to answer the problems on the problems formulation. Firstly, the writer read the novel, Twilight as the primary data. The writer read the novel several time in order to get a deep understanding of the story itself.

Secondly, the writer decided to formulate the topic, the main character’s motivation was related to the personality. Then, the writer drew the problem formulation.

Thirdly, the writer searched books related to the studies and theories, and the writer read some books on the theory related with the study, the theory on character and characterization, theory on motivation and theory on love.

Fourthly, the writer decided to find the approach to the study, and the writer used psychological approach. The writer looked for some books of psychology and the writer read the book to solve the problems.

Fifthly, the writer tried to answer the first problem. The description of the main character and how the character delineated in the novel. Then, the writer examined the second problem, what Isabella Swan sacrifices to love Edward Cullen. The last, to find what Isabella Swan’s motivation to sacrifice herself is.

CHAPTER IV

ANALYSIS

The novel Twilight written by Stephenie Meyer talks about the life of a teenager, Isabella Swan, who has unnatural love story because she falls in love with a vampire, Edward Cullen. This novel also talks about a strong motivation that Isabella Swan’s has in order to find her true love with no thinking for the consequences from each action.

This chapter consists of three parts based on three problems of this study. The first part is the description of major characters who have important roles in the story and analysis, both are Isabella Swan and Edward Cullen. It presents the description of major characters and the interaction with other characters. The interaction includes the attitude and the way of thinking toward all things around people, many things that happen in the story and the way those are solved will be depicted in the study.

(38)

The last part is to show Isabella Swan’s motivation to sacrifice herself. This part presents the explanation and conclusion from the second part, that Bella has to pay the risks and consequences because of the decision to love Edward. The strong reason for it, that is love which is binding them is hard to be apart. Therefore, it is true to say love is blind because sometimes love binds people tight, with no seeing the background of them, whatever they are, human or vampire.

A. Description of the Characters

In the first part of the analysis, the writer wants to give explanation of the characterization of the characters in the story. There are two major characters analyzed, both are Isabella Swan and Edward Cullen.

1. Isabella Swan

(39)

always tries to stand alone and be autonomous that is able to do anything by herself. When she arrives in Forks, Charlie gives her a car as a homecoming gift. Bella tries to reject it, but she does not want to make her father disappointed. Even the car is not in a good condition she still wants to receive it.

“Well, honey, I kind of already bought it for you. As a homecoming gift.” Charlie peeked sideways at me with a hopeful expression.

“You didn’t need to do that, Dad. I was going to buy myself a car.” “I don’t mind. I want you to be happy here” (p.7).

Isabella Swan is described as an autonomous character who can do anything by herself. She is also described as a cheerful person. It can be seen through the story, that she knows to live with Charlie is a boring thing but she can make that condition to be joyful. Bella’s decision to live in Forks is not a kind of protest to show to her mother. She leaves her mother because she wants her mother to be happy living with her husband who often moves to several places joining his baseball team. Bella realizes that it is a time for her to be autonomous to live with her father in Forks. She really understands the decision that she makes. To live with Charlie is something that is boring, because she has to be alone and to serve anything by herself.

Charlie had left for work before I got downstairs. In a lot of ways, living with Charlie was like having my own place, and I found myself reveling in the aloneness instead of being lonely (p.54).

(40)

and love. She can enjoy and take pleasure in that situation and condition, and she tries to accustom serving anything by herself with no mother’s help.

In Twilight, Isabella Swan is described as a good character who has a great sense of sympathy to people. Bella is portrayed as a figure that can give an extra consideration of empathy and harmony to her friends although her condition in bad. As an illustration, when she got an accident of collision that Tyler Crowley, who is also known as Bella’s friend, stroke her with his car because of losing steering control power, she does not get mad with the mistake that Tyler has made. In this case, Bella has a strong right to be angry with Tyler because of his human error. Startlingly, Bella shows her empathy and solidarity toward Tyler whose condition is worse than her in the hospital.

There was another flurry of hospital personnel, another stretcher brought to the bed next to me. I recognized Tyler Crowley from my Government class beneath the bloodstained bandages wrapped tightly around his head. Tyler looked a hundred times worse than I felt. But he was staring

“Don’t worry about it; you missed me” (p.60).

(41)

Isabella Swan is not only recognized as a good character who has a great sense of sympathy to all people, but she is also known as a kind girl, a figure that do not wants to hurt another person feeling. It can be seen from the moment when someone, Mike, who is also known as her friend, asks her to go to the spring dance party but she rejects it. In that situation, Bella knows that one of her close friend, Jessica, is falling in love with Mike. If Bella receives Mike’s invitation to the spring dance party, it means she will disturb the relation that happens between Mike and Jessica and she will also break her relation with Jessica as a close

I’m going to Seattle that Saturday,” I explained. “Can’t you go some other weekend?”

“Sorry, no,” I said. “So you shouldn’t make Jess wait any longer --- it’s rude” (p.73).

For Bella it is an impolite thing to receive Mike’s invitation to the party because it will hurt Jessica. Therefore, she gives several reasons to Mike to reject it by pretending to go to Seattle. Bella really understands about it. She does not want to be a bad person who hurts Jessica’s feeling, because Bella knows that her close friend really loves Mike.

(42)

wants to make everything to be alright among people, including Mike, Jessica and herself. For a different reason, Bella is a nonchalant person who does not want to give Mike a hope to be his girlfriend. She tries to disallow Mike’s feeling. This can be shown when Mike offers her for a dinner but she rejects it directly.

“Well, we could go to dinner or something . . . . and I could work on it

The decision to reject Mike’s offer for dinner is a good choice, for the reason that he is not someone that she loves. Bella falls in love with another person, and a boy that she really loves is Edward Cullen, someone that seems to be mysterious for Bella to recognize at first. Therefore, it is true for Bella to be a nonchalant person and not to respond to Mike’s attention.

(43)

someone loves and cares for that person. It happens to Bella, she is always curious to know anything about Edward’s life.

“Take whatever you want,” he said.

“I’m curious,” I said as I picked up an apple, turning it around in my hand, “what would you do if someone dared you to eat food?”

“You are always curious.” He grimaced, shaking his head (p.207).

Bella is also described as a daring character who is never afraid all situation and condition that she has and passes. From several investigations that she makes, she finds that someone that she really loves is not a human but he is a good vampire. Bella is not afraid at all to know that reality. On the contrary, it makes her more curiously to know about Edward, his family and vampire life entirely.

“It doesn’t matter to me what you are.”

A hard, mocking edge entered his voice. “You don’t care if I’m a monster? If I am is not a human?”

“No” (p.184).

So, Bella continues to investigate Edward to fulfill her desire in order not to make her curious any longer.

“Does it matter?” I took a deep breath.

“Not really.” I paused. “But I am curious.” My voice, at least, was composed.

He was suddenly resigned. “What are you curious about?” “How old are you?”

“Seventeen,” he answers promptly.

“And how long have you been seventeen?”

His lips twitched as he started at the road. “A while,” he admitted at last (p.185).

(44)

stronger than before. Through this situation, Bella is described as a struggled character who never gives up. She has a strong will and spirit to pass this reality with no reason to complain or regret.

My mind still swirled dizzily, full of images I couldn’t understand, and some I fought to repress. Nothing seemed clear at first, but as I fell gradually closer to unconsciousness, a few certainties became evident. About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was part of him --- and I didn’t know how potent that part might be --- that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him (p.195).

(45)

2. Edward Cullen

(46)

“Hello,” said a quiet, musical voice.

I looked up, stunned that he was speaking to me. He was sitting as far away from me as the desk allowed, but his chair was angled toward me. His hair was dripping wet, disheveled --- even so, he looked like he’d just finished shooting a commercial for hair gel. His dazzling face was friendly, open, a slight smile on his flawless lips. But his eyes were careful.

“My name is Edward Cullen,” he continued. “I didn’t have a chance to introduce myself last week. You must be Bella Swan” (p.43).

And Edward tries to continue the conversation with a little persuasion to make Bella attracted and interested.

My mind was spinning with confusion. Had I made up the whole thing? He was perfectly polite. I had to speak; he was waiting. But I couldn’t think of anything conventional to say.

“H-how do you know my name?” I stammered. He laughed a soft, enchanting laugh.

“Oh, I think everyone knows your name. The whole town’s been waiting for you to arrive” (p.44).

For Edward Bella is someone that he was been waiting for long time to be his lover. Because of his ability in reading people’s mind is unusable to know what Bella thinks about, it makes him sick because he does not know for the best way to be close to her.

(47)

Two long, white hands shot out protectively in front of me, and the van shuddered to stop a foot from my face, the large hands fitting providentially into a deep dent in the side of the van’s body.

Then his hands moved so fast they blurred. One was suddenly gripping under the body of the van, and something was dragging me, swinging my legs around like a rag doll’s, till they hit the tire of the tan car (p.56). In the abrupt bedlam, I could hear more than one person shouting my name. But more clearly than all the yelling, I could hear Edward Cullen’s low, frantic voice in my ear. that danger action will also make him injured, Bella will always question him for that rescue action, all people will know his camouflage to be a human being, and his family will get mad with him because he shows his strong power in front of the crowded area.

(48)

Edward in the sunlight was shocking. I couldn’t get used to it, though I’d been staring at him all afternoon. His skin, white despite the faint flush from yesterday’s hunting trip, literally sparkled, like thousands of tiny diamonds was embedded in the surface. He lay perfectly still in the grass, his shirt open his sculpted, incandescent chest, his scintillating arms bare. His glistening, pale lavender lids were shut, though of course he didn’t sleep. A perfect statue, carved in some unknown stone, smooth like marble, glittering like crystal (p.260).

As an extra point, Edward is a vampire. When the light of the sun shining on his skin it will make him to be more extraordinary. His body looks sparkling like a thousand of little diamonds. He is expressed as a perfect sculpture which is carved in some priceless stone, smooth like marble, glittering like crystal. Unfortunately, as being a vampire, to stay for long time under the hot and dry sunlight will cause him a danger. It will kill them. Therefore, Edward can also be described as a self-protective character who always protects himself to avoid sunlight. This is a strong reason for him and his family chooses to live in Forks, a wet and cool area. This is also another reason for him to be disappeared in the school during sunny day. He always pretends for the reason to journey to certain area or has vacation to some places.

(49)

“I’m the world’s best predator, aren’t I? Everything about me invites you in --- my voice, my face, even my smell. As if I need any of that!” unexpectedly, he was on his feet, bounding away, instantly out of sight, only to appear beneath the same tree as before, having circle the meadow in half a second (p.264).

Edward is not only known as the best predator, he is also described as a talented character who can run and move in high speed faster than many other vampires. As being a vampire to be speedy in running is something which is common, but it is a special talent for Edward who can run quicker than all vampires that is described in the story. His fantastic speed to run is also known as the best in the Cullen’s family. No one in his family is able to equalize his wonderful speed to run and move around. When playing baseball together with the Cullen’s family, Edward is the one who can get the ball speedy. He is faster than his father, Carlisle. It is can be seen from the story when Edward picks Bella up throughout the dark forest with a fantastic speed. Edward is portrayed as someone who has long breath to run. He can run with a wonderful speed with no sound and no proof that shows his feet touch the earth, indicating he runs very fast.

He streaked through the dark, thick underbrush of the forest like a bullet, like a ghost. There was no sound, no evidence that his feet touch the earth. His breathing never changed, never indicated any effort. But the trees flew by at deadly speeds, always missing us by inches (p.280).

(50)

be an enemy for the human beings because vampire’s food is human fresh blood, and it is abnormal for a vampire who is able to live around human beings. Second, Edward and his family are able to have human’s lifestyle and to do habitual action that human beings do such as, to have a car, to go school, and to be a doctor. It is abnormal for a vampire to do such of things. The last, Edward and the Cullen’s family are categorized as a unique vampire because they are vampires who are able not to consume human fresh blood at all. As an illustration, if these vampires are human beings they should be categorized as a vegetarian people. Edward and his family have been able not to consume human fresh blood for very long times ago, about hundreds years ago. It was started by their leader of the Cullen’s family, Carlisle. For the first time it was hard for him not to drink human blood, because human blood was vampire’s primary need. For the reason Carlisle wanted to be close with human’s life, he substituted his primary food with another food. It was animal blood. Carlisle was success to accustom himself to consume animal blood, and he was also success to habituate his next generation in the Cullen’s family not to consume human blood at all. Now, Edward and his family are very comfortable to live around human beings.

“Are there a lot of . . . your kind?” I was surprised. “How many of them could walk among us undetected?”

“No, not many. But most won’t settle in any one place. Only those like us, who’ve given up hunting you people” --- a sly glance in my direction --- “can live together for any length of time. We’ve only found one other family like ours, in a small village in Alaska. We lived together for a time, but there were so many of us that we became too noticeable. Those of us who live . . . differently tend to band together” (p.290).

(51)

blood. They live separately for some distances, because they have their own territory to live and to hunt their target of hunting. This is a cause for the vampires who want to live among people. They have to find some alternative food to eat in order to hide their identity from many people.

Edward and his family are also described as a modern vampire. Totally, they can live and have an ordinary life like a normal people have. Their life is really different from the common vampires that are described in fury tales or legend stories such as to live in a horror place and to sleep in a coffin. In contrary, they live in a nice home with complete luxurious equipment. They also have several luxurious car collections such as Volvo and BMW series. Their life is really modern like a normal people have, but they are classified into high class people with a deluxe lifestyle. It can be seen through the story when Isabella Swan is amazed to visit the Cullen’s house. She cannot find any horror room and mystic thing seems in it.

He followed my gaze. “Not what you expected, is it?” he asked, his voice smug.

“No,” I admitted.

“No coffins, no pilled skulls in the corners; I don’t even think we have cobwebs . . . what a disappointment this must be for you,” he continued slyly.

I ignored his teasing. “It’s so light . . . so open.”

He was more serious when he answered. “It’s the one place we never have to hide” (p.329).

(52)

Every source that talks about vampire, it must be stated as fantastic creature. There is a wonderful fascination that vampire has, because it is neither figured out such a ghost nor devil. “As the vampire, who is himself neither ghost nor demon, but yet who partakes the dark natures and possesses mysterious and terrible qualities of both” (p.133). Vampire has a strong power which is dark and has a good superiority which is unexplained.

B. Isabella Swan’s Sacrifices to Love Edward Cullen

In this second part of this chapter, the focus is on Isabella Swan’s sacrifices to love a young man, Edward Cullen. The focus will be on how the sacrifices that Bella did indicate something that her love for Edward is very strong. In this case, the explanation and the clarification about Bella’s sacrifices to love Edward will be presented, then the evidence will also be given, about how the sacrifices that Bella did which is seen in the story through the characterization of whom involves in the problem. Bella’s sacrifice is examined because it is a form of consequence to reveal her motivation to be with Edward.

Sacrifice is a choice when someone should let go whatever he or she has in life to achieve what he or she wants more. The sacrifices in Bella’s life are more to the mental sacrifices. All sacrifices are more about what Bella feels, hopes, and dreams. Her dream to be close to Edward is one of those.

(53)

compassion, and affection. Paul Hauck gives his interpretation about love in his book How to Love and be Loved, he states that love is one of the most desired conditions in the world. People seek it all of their lives but seldom get enough of it. It is a commodity for which people have an insatiable appetite. The more they get, the more they want. It creates feeling of the most intense delight such that, with its first encounter, people remember it forever. However, it is also one of the most painful conditions. People kill themselves and others over it. It is on the minds of the masses to such an extent that probably no other subject has been expressed in so much song, poetry, and prose.

(54)

step, and it will be devided into three parts. First, to be isolated from normal life. Second, to tell a lie for a goodness. Third, to sacrifice Bella’s life.

1. To be Isolated from Normal Life

At the beginning of the story Isabella Swan is described as a cheerful character. Because of the reason she loves Edward, she must pretend to act an unsual attitude in order to hide Edward’s identity and his family. First changing on Bella’s attitude that appears, she does not want to be close to her friends, Jessica and Angela. It seems different compared to the condition before she knows Edward and the Cullen’s family. Before Bella knows Edward, Jessica and Angela are the close friends who always make her happy and the best partners who are loyal to share the problem or story and to keep the secret. It seems dissimilar to the situation and the condition after she recognizes and be close to Edward. Bella always keeps the distance with her friends for the purpose to keep Edward’s secret.

He spoke before I could. “Go stop Jessica an Angela before I have to track them down, too. I don’t think I could restrain myself if I ran into your other friends again.”

I shivered at threat in his voice.

“Jess! Angela!” I yelled after them, waving when they turned. They rushed back to me, the pronounced relief on both their faces simultaneously changing to surprise as they saw who I was standing next to. They hesitated a few feet from us.

“Where have you been?” Jessica’s voice was suspicious.

“I got lost,” I admitted sheepishly. “And then I ran into Edward.” I gestured toward him (p.165).

(55)

with her friends, but she must do it. She relizes it is a consequence that she has. It is a little form of Bella’s sacrifice to love Edward.

To be close to Edward changes Bella’s attitude to be an inactive whether in interaction or communication with her friends. To know Edward forces Bella to be another person. It changes her normal characteristic as a communicative person to be someone who is always restrained in relationship. This is one of the consequences that she gets for the major reason to be close to Edward. Bella must keep Edward’s identity whose individual is a vampire, a real enemy for human beings. Although she knows that Edward and his family are good vampires who can live together around human beings in harmony, Bella still does not want everybody knows their real identity as vampires. Bella’s sacrifice to love her lover is not easy. She has to be strong to pass all the risks that she has. She must be me?” His voice broke on the last word.

“Thank you for asking me, but I’m going to be in Seattle that day” (p.76). . . .

“Will you ask me to the spring dance?” he continued.

“I’m not going to be in town, Tyler.” My voice sounded a little sharp. I had to remember it wasn’t his fault that Mike and Eric had already used up my quota of patience for the day (77).

(56)

It is also caused by a reason that Edward is only the one that she loves. Therefore, she rejects her friends offer as well as she can.

There is some other evidence that shows several changes on Bella’s attitude. It can be seen through the story when she shows a significant change on her characteristic to be impolite ones. It is something that is unordinary for Bella to express her bad-mannered expression, because she is recognized as a figure who is polite to everyone. It can be shown from the evidence when she gets mad with her father’s close friend, Billy, who is also known as Jacob’s father. She gets angry with Billy because he advises her to avoid Edward and the Cullen’s family who have bad reputation and reservation in his social interaction. It is an impolite expression for Bella to do such of thing, because she can make an alternative way which is appropriate to deliver her disagreement toward Billy.

“I noticed you’ve been spending time with one of the Cullens.” “Yes,” I repeated curtly.

His eyes narrowed. May be it’s none of my business, but I don’t think that is such a good idea.”

“You’re right,” I agreed. “It is none of your business.”

He raised his graying eyebrows at my tone. “You probably don’t know this, but the Cullen family has an unpleasant reputation and reservation” (p.352).

(57)

do that thing even though Charlie should be very disappointed to know that his daughter does not respect his close friend. She is also never afraid with Billy that he will also be disappointed with her family, especially with her.

2. To Tell a Lie for a Goodness

At the beginning Isabella Swan in known as a plain girl who always tells the truth. It can be seen throughout the story when Mike Newton asks her something about snow. “Haven’t you ever seen snow fall before?” he asked incredulously. “Sure I have.” I paused. “On TV” (p.39). in that situation Bella is describes as an unadorned girl who has no potency to tell a lie.

It seems different with the reality after she recognizes Edward Cullen. Some evidence can be seen that she is not afraid to state a false thing. The strong reason that forces her to tell a lie, that she wants to protect Edward’s information and background. This is a form of Bella’s sacrifice to love Edward. No one has the same opinion that to tell a lie is allowed to do. Unfortunately, it is different from the situation that Bella has. To be with Edward is a difficult choice, because every single information about him is a secret. So, the best way to keep a secret is to keep silent or to tell a lie.

Some evidence that shows Bella’s action, she tries not to be honest when her friend, Mike Newton, asks her some information about Edward. Directly, she answers his question with a false truth in order to keep Edward’s secret.

“. . . and then I have to study for the Trig test or I’m going to fail.” “Is Cullen helping you study?”

(58)

In that situation Bella tries to hide a real information about Edward. She does not tell where the position of Edward is. Actually, in that situation Edward’s position is located in a jungle, a territory where Edward and the Cullen’s family are usually hunt their favorite food, an animal fresh blood. It is so impossible for Bella to tell Mike real information about Edward position in that situation. Therefore, she decides to tell a lie as a good solution to give.

Sometimes, to tell a lie becomes the best way to hide a clandestine or to overcome a problem. But commonly, it just becomes a new trouble which is hard to be solved. Now, it happens to Bella. The situation that she passes is a dilemmatic position. She has to pretend to be alright, to consider her life is usual like the other people usually have. It can be seen throughout the story when she has to hide a real situation that she has. At the end part of the story shows that Jacob asks Bella to leave Edward, because Jacob regards the accident that Bella gets in Phoenix is caused by Edward. He also states that his father, Billy, has the same opinion about it.

“Well --- this is so stupid, I’m s sorry, Bella --- he wants you to break up with your boyfriend. He asked me to tell you ‘please’.” He shook his head in disgust.

“He’s still superstitious, eh?”

“Yeah. He was . . . kind of over the top when you get hurt down in Phoenix. He didn’t believe . . .” Jacob trailed off self-consciously.

My eyes narrowed. “I fell” (p.491).

(59)

She argues that accident is her own mistake and no people are included in it or must be responsible for it. She states to all people that accident was caused by herself because of her weaknesses to lose control when getting down the stairs. Bella is a good liar because she can make sure her that father and mother, all her families, and all her friends for that accident. Her option to tell a lie to all people is a kind of Bella’s sacrifice to love Edward. She does not want to make all people to panic to know the truth that a bad vampire who is not in the Cullen’s vampire family injures her. She is afraid that all people will get mad with Edward and his family if they know about the truth, because only the Cullen’s family is a vampire family who seems close to Bella this time.

There is some other evidence that shows Bella’s sacrifice which is mortal to be done. This is a kind of fatal mistake that she ever makes, she tells a lie to her father. It can be seen throughout the story when she tries to leave Forks in order to run away from the bad vampire’s pursuit. Bella does not have a good option and reason to leave home. She must tell a lie to Charlie that Forks is not a good place for her to live, for the purpose to get an illegal permission to leave Charlie’s home.

I glared up at my father, fresh tears in my eyes for what I was about to do. “I do like him --- that’s the problem. I can’t to do this anymore! I can’t put down any more roots here! I don’t want to end up trapped in this stupid, boring town like Mom! I’m not going to make the same dumb mistake she did. I hate it --- I can’t stay here another minute!”

His hand drooped from my arm like I’d electrocuted him (p.393).

(60)

several years ago. Surely, that curse is a disaster for Charlie because he must listen to that bad language for second times. Actually, it is a hard choice for Bella to tell a lie with a bitter swearword to her father. It is a kind of her sacrifice to love Edward that she can make. She must do it because she has no long time to ask for some permission from her father in a short and crucial time. Therefore, she takes that impolite way for the reason to leave home and Forks as fast as she can.

3. To Sacrifice Bella’s Life

The most difficult form of Bella’s sacrifice to love Edward is being ready to die, for the major purpose to make her dream and desire to be true to be with her boyfriend. This form of sacrifice is a hard option to do because no one should be able to do. It proves that Bella’s intention to love Edward is not a kind of joke. She is ready to do anything to reach her desire and dream even though the consequence for it is her main belongings must moves out.

(61)

complete information through the internet sources and several books which is related to her investigation.

Unfortunately, several sources on Bella’s investigation say an astonishing thing. She gets some information whether from internet sources or books which drinkers. Jacob also states that her father is one of tribal elder in Quileute clan.

“He was a tribal elder, like my father. You see, the cold ones are the natural enemies of the wolf --- well, not the wolf, really, but the wolves that turn into men, like our ancestors. You would call them werewolves.” “Werewolves have enemies?”

“Only one” (p.125) . . .

“And what are they?” I finally asked. “What are the cold ones?” He smiled darkly.

“Blood drinkers,” he replied in a chilling voice. “Your people call them vampires” (p.126).

(62)

that they have been made. If there is someone of them ruins this agreement, a war is a consequence for it. It is a fatal mistake for Bella to know about the reality. If she makes a little mistake in her step to face it, her safety of life would be a compensation for it. This is a kind of Bella’s sacrifice to love Edward. She is ready to do anything in order to fulfill her dream to be true, even if she must die.
