As one of the language skill, reading is important for the students. In the reading activity the students are expected to have competence in comprehending the text. But, most of the students difficult to understanding meaning of story. They are hardly to concentrate as they read and most of them are not interested in reading. Story Mapping is a technique to solve the problems. Story mapping is a graphic organizer to help the students learn the elements of story by identifying story characters, plot, setting, problem and solution of the story.

The purpose of the research is to find out whether the reading comprehension of narrative text of the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Karanganyar Demak in the academic year 2017/2018 is better than before being taught by using story mapping technique.

The writer used experimental research design by conducted pre test and post test. There are two variables; story mapping technique as independent variable and the reading comprehension of narrative text of the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Karanganyar Demak in the academic year 2017/2018 as dependent variable. The writer determines the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Karanganyar Demak in the academic year 2017/2018 as the population. The writer took samples in X MIPA 3 as class of experiment.

Sebagai salah satu kemampuan berbahasa, membaca penting untuk siswa. Dalam kegiatan membaca siswa diharapkan mempunyai kemampuan dalam pemahaman teks. Tapi, beberapa siswa sulit untuk memahami arti dari cerita. Mereka susah untuk berkonsentrasi selama mereka membaca dan banyak dari mereka yang tidak tertarik membaca. Story Mapping adalah teknik untuk mengatasi permasalahan ini. Pemetaan cerita adalah kerangka grafik untuk membantu siswa belajar elemen-elemen dari cerita dengan mengidentifikasi karakter cerita, alur, latar, masalah, dan penyelesaian cerita.

Tujuan penulis dalam penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui; Apakah pemahaman membaca teks narrative siswa kelas sepuluh SMA N 1 Karanganyar Demak tahun ajaran 2017/2018 baik daripada sebelum diajar menggunakan teknik pemetaan cerita.

Dalam penelitian ini penulis menggunakan desain ekperimen dengan pre test dan post test. Ada dua variabel, pertama yaitu teknik pemetaan cerita sebagai independent variabel dan pemahaman membaca teks narrative siswa kelas sepuluh SMA N 1 Karanganyar Demak tahun ajaran 2017/2018 sebagai dependen variabel. Penulis menentukan siswa kelas sepuluh SMA N 1 Karanganyar Demak tahun ajaran 2017/2018 sebagai populasi. Penulis mengambil sample dalam kelas X MIPA 3 sebagai kelompok experiment.

Hasil dari experiment tersebut menunjukan bahwa perhitungan t-test pada tingkat signifikasi 0,05, dengan Df 39, dan t-table 2,042, t obtain 25,35. Dengan kata lain t obtain lebih tinggi dari pada t-table. Pemahaman membaca teks narrative siswa kelas sepuluh SMA N 1 Karanganyar Demak setelah diajarkan menggunakan teknik pemetaan cerita lebih baik dari pada sebelumnya. Hal tersebut dapat ditunjukan dengan nilai rata-rata 82,3 dan standart deviation 5,85. nilai rata rata tersebut lebih tiggi dibandingkan dengan rata-rata pemahaman membaca teks narrative siswa kelas sepuluh SMA N 1 Karanganyar Demak sebelum diajarkan menggunakan teknik pemetaan cerita dengan nilai rata-rata 64,3 dan nilai standart deviation 6,3. Itu berarti bahwa Null Hypothesis (H0) tidak diterima dan Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) diterima.
