Handling My Difficulty in Translating English News Articles Effectively As A Script Writer in Auto Radio 88,9 FM Bandung.

ABSTRACT

Tugas Akhir ini dibuat berdasarkan kesulitan yang saya alami selama menjalani proses magang di Auto Radio 88,9 FM Bandung. Selama magang di Auto Radio 88,9 FM Bandung, saya mendapat tugas untuk mengisi segmen Auto News. Segmen Auto News di bagi menjadi 3 bagian di jam tertentu. Saya diwajibkan mencari berita internasional sebanyak sembilan berita di setiap harinya. Kesulitan yang saya alami dalam mengerjakan tugas ini adalah soal ketepatan waktu dan efektifitas kerja yang mempengaruhi rekan kerja saya. Saya sulit menerjemahkan 9 artikel dalam waktu yang telah ditentukan. Itu berdampak pada rekan kerja saya yang bertugas untuk merekam berita yang telah saya dapat. Kesulitan ini terjadi juga karena saya harus memilih berita yang baik dan menarik untuk di dengar karena, menarik atau tidaknya berita yang saya pilih akan

mempengaruhi rating yang di dapat oleh radio itu sendiri. Oleh karena itu, saya mengangkat topik mengenai bagaimana cara saya agar dapat menerjemahkan sembilan artikel dengan waktu yang efektif di Auto Radio 88,9 FM Bandung. Berdasarkanpengalaman saya magang di Auto Radio, penyebab dari permasalahan saya ialah saya kurang tertarik dalam membaca, disaat menerjemahkan saya menemukan banyak kata-kata yang sulit dan juga saya kurang berpengalaman dalam hal

menerjemahkan artikel. Dampak yang ditimbulkan dari sulitnya

menerjemahkan dengan waktu yang efektif adalah saya menghabiskan banyak waktu saya untuk menerjemahkan sembilan artikel , dampak lain yang saya timbulkan adalah rekan kerja saya harus bekerja dua kali yang mana itu hal yang tidak efektif dan juga jadwal dari Auto News sempat berubah karena keterlambatan saya dalam menyelesaikan tugas yang diberikan.

Saya menemukan tiga solusi yang cukup berpotensi untuk

memecahkan masalah tersebut. Diantaranya ialah dengan mengikuti program pelatihan tentang penerjemahan, menggunakan kamus online dan saya akan berlatih dengan membaca artikel dengan rutin di

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Working as a script writer in radio industry means I have to be able to

translate some text. As stated by an article entitled “What is Translation”

swhich says “Translation is the process of transferring written text from

one language into another” (par. 1). The important thing is to convey the

message clearly and accurately. Working as a script writer in Autoradio

88,9 FM Bandung required me to find the information from foreign

countries, it means that all the information that I got was not in Bahasa.

Therefore, I should translate all the information into Bahasa to give the

information to the listeners. Besides, working as a script writer means I

must be ready with all the deadlines given by the company. As stated by

Lobal “To succeed in this field, you will need good organization and time

management skills. The ability to meet deadlines and set priorities is very

important as well” (par. 8). Thus, one of the ways to be good in translating

is to deal with all the requirements.

I was interested in radio industry, Therefore, I chose to do my

internship at Auto Radio 88,9 FM Bandung as a script writer. Based on my

when doing this internship, I had a difficulty to translate English articles

effectively everday. During my internship I should translate nine English

articles everyday. I found that translating nine English articles in the limited

time is the biggest problem that I had during my internship. In my office I

needed the computer to finish the job. When I wanted to use the

computer, sometimes there were other people who were using the

computer. It took my time for a while whereas, I did not have much time to

finish the job. If I did not finish the task by the deadline, the segment could

probably change and it would affect my performance mostly to my partner.

I found that it was not easy to translate nine English articles everyday

with the limited time. Thus, I decide to choose that problem as the topic of

my term paper. Hopefully, I can find out the causes and the effects of the

problem. On top of that, I can find out the solution of that problem in my

term paper. I will present the analysis in the next chapter.

B. Identification of the Problem

The problem I am going to analyze in this paper is formulated in these

questions:

1. Why did I have difficulties in translating English articles effectively as a

script writer in Auto Radio 88,9 FM Bandung ?

3. How should I overcome the problem ?

C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study

The first objective of the study is to find out the causes of my difficulties

in translating English articles effectively as a script writer in Auto Radio

88,9 FM Bandung. The second objective is to find out the effects of my

difficulties in translating English articles effectively as a script writer in Auto

Radio 88,9 FM Bandung. The third objective is to find out the best solution

to overcome my difficulties in translating English articles effectively.

The benefits of doing this research for the institution is hopefully Auto

Radio 88,9 FM Bandung will have the reference to choose a good

employee. Also Auto Radio will get more knowledge about translator

industry. For the readers, I hope this term paper will become an optional

reference and give them insights about translations. As the writer, this

term paper will help me to get more knowledge about becoming a good

translation ;morover I hope this term paper will be useful for my personal

references in the future if I work as a translator.

D. Description of the Institution

This data is based on the Auto Radio company profile. Auto Radio was

frequency of Autoradio is 88,9 FM. Autoradio Bandung is located on Jalan

Cihampelas 264-268. The concept of Autoradio is becoming a radio

station that informs automotive news as much as 35% , 35% of sports and

30% of lifestyle. The vision of Auto Radio is to represent a program of

entertaiment that can be enjoyed for every age clasification , on top of

thats, it aims at representing a good information for the creative people

who stayed in Bandung. Autoradio also has a mission to be the one of the

radio that becomes the listener’s choosen, in addition, to change the

image of Autoradio which was existed as the automotive and sport radio

station to become a radio station that is more sociable in the ears of the

customers. And also to get the best position among listeners in Indonesia

survey organization.

E. Method of the Study

The method that I applied in writing this term paper is the library

research from observation which was done when I had an internship at

Auto Radio 88,9 FM Bandung from 7th July until 21th August 2014 and

interview.. The other method is by doing library research to find out

theories from books and the internet to support my analysis.

The study is about my difficulties in translating English articles in Auto

Radio 88,9 FM Bandung when I had my internship from 7th July until 21th

August 2014. This study would be about my problem as a script writer who

is required to find and translate 9 English articles everyday within limited

time.

G. Organization of the Term Paper

The first part of this Term Paper is the Abstract, the overall summary of

the final paper in Bahasa Indonesia. The other part is the Declaration of

originality,then the next part are Acknowledgements and the Table of

Contents. The first chapter of the term paper is the Introduction of the

study, which consists of Background of the Study, Identification of

Problem, Objectives and Benefits of the Study, Description of Institution,

Method of the Study, Limitation of the Study, and Organization of the Term

Paper. Chapter Two is about analysis of the problem which explains the

causes and effects of the problem. Chapter Three is about the potential

solutions, it present some potential solutions to solve the problem,

supported by theories. The last chapter, which is chapter four, is the

conclusion. In this chapter, the chosen solution of the problem is

presented with clear and logic arguments. The term paper ends with the

Bibliography and Appendices, which contain the Flowchart, the

transcription of the interview, Auto Radio 88,9 FM Bandung company

CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSION

In the previous chapters, I have analyzed the problem I had when I did my

internship, which is my difficulty in translating English news articles everyday

in Auto Radio 88,9 FM Bandung. There are three causes of the problem. The

first is I did not enjoy reading. The second is I found many difficult words while

reading the English articles. The third I lacked of experiences in translating

English articles. I also find the effects of my problem. The first, I had to spend

a lot of time to finish translating nine English articles. The second, my partner

had to do recording for delivering the articles in two time which was not

effective. And the third, the schedule of Auto News segment was once

changed because of my late submission of the articles. There are three

potential solutions to solve the problem. The first potential solution is I will join

training program about translation in my spare time. The second potential

solution is I will use online English dictionary. The third potential is I will

Based on the analysis in the previous chapter, I conclude that the best

solution to solve the problem is by combining the three potential solutions.

The first, joining some training program about translation will help me to get

more knowledge, which was effective to learn new ways to be good at

translating. It also will be better to fill my spare time to get a new knowledge

than just do something useless. The second, using online dictionary will be

effective in the office to help me find the right meaning of the difficult words

while doing the job. As long as the network in the office is good and I get the

computers, it will be very helpful to use the online dictionary, on the other

hand it will be faster than using dictionary books. I also need to improve

myself. Therefore, the third potential solution will be helpful too. Reading at

home is also an important thing that will help me to be accustomed to reading

English articles, so that when I do the job at work I will get used to read

English article. By combining all three potential solutions I sure that it will

become the best way to solve my problem that I found during my internship

and all the potential solutions will also help me to handle the problem that I

made during the internship.

At the end of this term paper, I sincerely hope that this term paper could

give educational information to the readers. Moreover, I hope this term paper

Me : oh yaya, jadi gini mas saya mempunyai kesulitan saat masa

magang saya kemarin dalam menerjemahkan artikel bahasa ingrris tersebut

karena beberapa faktor, salah satunya karena banyaknya artikel yang di

minta dari pihak radio setiap harinya, apakah mas Sendi sendiri sebagai

partner kerja saya merasakan dampak dari kesulitan yang saya alami?

Mr. Sendi : sejauh ini dampaknya memang saya merasakan saat kemarin

butuh adaptasi yah. Begitu juga saya harus adaptasi dengan cara kerja

mayang.

Me : dampak yang paling terasa sama mas Sendi apa nih mas ?

Mr. Sendi : kalo yang paling terasa itu yang kita pernah menghapus segment

pertama auto news di jam 11 karena saat itu Mayang belum selesai mencari

3 berita ya. Paling itu sih.

Me : oh iya itu ya , ada lagi yang lain mungkin mas?

Mr. Sendi : paling soal recording ya kalau sebelum jam 11 Mayang belum

selsaikan 9 artikel kan berarti saya harus merekam dalam dua waktu ya.

padahal sebernal saya bisa merekamnya hanya dalam satu waktu, tapi

karena beritanya belum full 9 jadi ya terpaksa di bagi dua waktu.

Me : oh iya iya maaf sebelumnya, kalo boleh tau juga biasanya yg

bekerja sebagai script writer seperti saya ini dapat memberi bahan recording

kepada mas Sendi dalam satu waktu atau sama seperti saya ?

Mr. Sendi : dulu itu karena dia telah bekerja selama 3 tahun disini sebagai

script writer, jadi mungkin sudah terbiasa dan menyetornya 9 artikel ini dalam

satu kali.

Me : tepatnya berapa jam ya mas ?

Mr. Sendi : yaa kisaran satu jam setengah bahkan sejam, tergantung dia

masuknya juga.

Me : oke deh mas Sendi kalo begitu, terimakasih atas waktunya dan

Israeli airstrikes kill 16 in Gaza, Palestinian officials say

The recently renewed violence in the Mideast claimed more lives Sunday as Israeli strikes killed at least 16 people in Gaza and a Hamas attack on a border crossing wounded four Israeli civilians.

The 16 Palestinian victims included a mother and her three children in their home, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, Ashraf al-Qidra.

One of the targets was Mohamed Al-Oul, who supervised Hamas' financial transactions, according to the Israel Defense Forces. The IDF said a "hit was confirmed."

The four Israelis were hit at the border crossing near the town of Erez. THe IDF tweeted that several rockets and mortars struck the checkpoint. One civilian was moderately wounded and three were injured, the IDF said, without elaborating on their conditions.

The civilians had come to the crossing to aid people needing humanitarian assistance, Israel's Ministry of Defense said in a written statement. The crossing remains closed.
