MOST HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY HOMILY ~ MAY 29/30, 2021
My sister has a dog, and they do not have any fences in their neighborhood, so they would either have to keep their dog on a chain when it is outside or get one of those invisible fences. How many of you are famil- iar with invisible fences? With the invisible fence, you designate the area that you want to confine your dog to, the dog wears a spe- cial collar and they get an electric shock if they venture out of that area. The dog wants to avoid the shock, so generally figures out how far they go without getting a shock.
They cannot see the boundaries, but they learn what they are. Now my sister’s dog is getting older, and the invisible fence has not worked for years, but the dog still does not venture outside the boundaries. In reality the dog could run free when it goes outside, but it goes along with these self imposed limitations. We sometimes have these self imposed limitations. We love and we are hurt, so we decide we are not lovable and close ourselves off from close relationships.
Maybe we got out of our comfort zone and tried something we felt called to do and failed, so we do not want to put ourselves out there anymore. Maybe we know what we are called to do, but it is going to be diffi- cult and it will be a lot of work, so we settle for what we have. Maybe we are ruminating about something that happened in the past and cannot truly live in the present. Maybe we are living with a total focus on the future, I will do it when I have more time, I will do it
when I retire, I will do it when I feel more secure, which may mean that you will never do it. These are all self imposed limitations.
Today we celebrate Trinity Sunday.
God is three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit in one God. We hear in the Second Reading that we are God’s adopted sons and daughters. In the Roman world 2,000 years ago, it was considered a great privi- lege to be adopted. It meant that you were personally selected to carry on the family name and to inherit the family property. It was a great honor to be adopted, and so we should feel honored as well. And the Sec- ond Reading says that we can cry out to him
“Abba Father.” Abba Father is a term of endearment and expresses the great love that the Father has for us. He is the perfect loving father. He will love and protect us wherever we go and whatever we do. We can always go to him for advice. He will never give up on us. Then there is the Son.
I often wonder what it would have been like to have known Jesus when he walked the earth 2,000 years ago. It must have been a great privilege to have known him in this way. Can you imagine what it would be like to have a brother or best friend like Jesus?
Someone who would always have your back, someone who would do anything for you? You do! We also hear in the Second Reading that we are joint heirs with Jesus.
Jesus is our brother. We also have the Holy Spirit. We hear in the Second Reading that he is not the “spirit of slavery to fall back into fear.” We cannot let our fears and doubts enslave us and lead us into self imposed limitations. If we live in the Spirit, he will move us to a better place so that we can be the best versions of ourselves, so that we can be all that God intended us to be.
We have been living with a lot of self imposed limitations for the past year and a half because of a coronavirus that we can-
not see, just like the invisible limits imposed by the invisible fence. These self imposed limita- tions have served us well and have kept us safe, but they are not working for us anymore.
We may not be ready to run free yet, but we need to start pushing ourselves back to nor- malcy. If you are fully vaccinated, you are pretty safe. When you start doing things that you have not done in a year and a half, it is going to feel a little uncomfortable, but we need to force ourselves to do some of these things and support one another in moving forward. If you have not been fully vaccinated, we have now learned that wearing a mask and social distancing will keep you pretty safe.
And as the cases of COVID continue to de- crease, there is less and less virus out there.
We can continue to take some reasonable precautions, but living always involves some risk. If you wait for the world to be 100% safe, you will be staying at home alone with a mask for the rest of your life.
Have you accepted the limitations that exist only in your mind? Are you ready to settle for much less than God has to offer?
Remember you have a loving Father who will always care for you, a brother and a best friend in the Son who will do anything for you, and a Holy Spirit that will lead you in the direc- tion you are called to go. Don’t stay in the backyard for the rest of your life. Run free!
Love & Peace, Fr. Jim

An Altar Server Training will be held on Sunday, June 27th, after the 11:00 AM Mass. We will start in the Gathering Area until Adoration is finished. Training is open to all youth of the Parish who are going into 4th grade through 12th grade.
Sign Up Genius is used to schedule servers, so you are able to pick the week- ends you are available. We just ask that you serve 1-2 times per month. The train- ing will take about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on how many attend.
Altar serving is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in the Parish. It helps our young people to be more confident, to be- come youth leaders in the Parish and, most importantly, brings them closer to Jesus.
Please contact Lisa Smerdon
[email protected] or (734) 502-4661so she can plan accordingly.

Religious Education Classes
Planning is underway for Religious Education Classes for the 20212022 school year. We are planning to be back to inperson learning for the Fall with safety protocols, pending vaccinations for those younger than 12 years old. Once again, we will do whatever will be necessary to assist parents in their children’s faith formation.
Have you ever considered sharing your faith with our young people and would you be willing to commit an hour or so a week by being a Catechist or a Classroom Aide? If so, please contact me at [email protected] or call me at 7344642020, ext. 308.
Being a Catechist is a rewarding experience that not only teach- es our young people, but strengthens your relationship with Je- sus at the same time!
The Fruits of the Holy Spirit
“Peace be with you.” “And with your Spirit.” This week I would like to think about the gift of peace. We are not at peace when we are distanced from God. Jesus died to remove sin, which distanced us from God, and to bring us back to unity with God. Shalom is the Hebrew word for peace. The literal meaning of Shalom is “to be complete or whole”. When we distance our- selves from God through sin, we are no longer complete or whole as we were made to be united with God, not separated from Him. “God cannot give us peace and happiness apart from Himself, because it is not there.” ~ C.S. Lewis
“Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they will be called Children of God.” (Matthew 5:9) As we go through this week, work at being a peacemaker. Compromise, work to fix a broken relationship, comfort those who are hurting, tackle your self
doubt. Make plans to go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
RememberShalom “Peace be with you.”
Please continue to be safe my friends ~
We need all of you
here at St. Edith!

Waterers Needed
Have you been enjoying all the lovely flow- ers planted around the Church? Most of the flowers get watered with the sprinkler system, butwe are looking for one or two more people to help our "watering team" who take care of watering all the containers of flowers that don't get the sprinklers. This job is only done once a week, takes about 3060 minutes and can be done anytime dur- ing the day when it's convenient for you. Training is provided!
Please email, text or call if you can help us out with watering this summer.

GOSPEL OF LIFE
Every Life is Worth Living From Conception to Natural Death
"This is my commandment: Love one another as I love you" (John 15:12).
Jesus' standard of love is really high: His own example of loving. And what did that entail? First of all, Jesus' love was inclusive. He welcomed the poor and rich, Jew and Gentile, women and men, healthy and sick, young and old, timid and bold, charming and annoying. No one was outside His circle of lovingnot even those who put Him to death. And it was Jesus' love that enabled Him to lay down His life for us. The laying down of our life for others can take many forms: a single sweeping gesturelike a firefighter entering a burning building
or the countless small acts of selfdenial involved in sustaining a marriage, raising a child, living a religious commitment, serving in a particular ministry, or enduring pain. "Love one another as I love you." What a challenge that is.
But the good news is this: Jesus, our friend, strengthens us in all our attempts to be inclusive and selfless in our loving." A quote from Sr. Melannie Svoboda, SND.
There will be candy bars available
next week after all the Masses for Father's Day in the Gathering Area.
Stop by and pick up a few.
Your donations will help support Right to LifeLifespan.
