PERTURBING NON-REAL EIGENVALUES OF NONNEGATIVE

REAL MATRICES∗

Abstract. LetAbe an (entrywise) nonnegativen×nmatrix with spectrumσand Perron eigen-valueρ. Guo Wuwen [Linear Algebra and its Applications 266 (1997), pp. 261–267] has shown that ifλis another real eigenvalue ofA, then, for allt≥0, replacingρ,λinσbyρ+t,λ−t, respec tively, while keeping all other entries ofσ unchanged, again yields the spectrum of a nonnegative matrix. He poses the question of whether an analogous result holds in the case of non-realλ. In this paper, it is shown that this question has an affirmative answer.

1. Introduction. Our main result is:

Theorem 1.1. Let A be an n×nnonnegative real matrix with spectrumσ and Perron root ρ. Let λ=b+ic, where b andc are real andi =√−1, be a non-real eigenvalue of A. Then, for all t ≥ 0, replacing ρ, b+ic, b−ic in σ by ρ+ 2t,

b−t+ic, b−t−ic , respectively, while keeping the other entries of σ unchanged, again yields the spectrum of ann×nnonnegative matrix.

We use the notation of Guo’s paper [1]. In particular a listσofncomplex numbers is saidto be realizable if σ is the spectrum of a nonnegative realn×n matrix. In proving the result, we first show that the theorem holds for all sufficiently smallt >0, andthen we use a compactness argument to extendthe result to all nonnegative t.

2. Small perturbation case. LetA be an n×n nonnegative matrix andlet σ= (a, b+ic, b−ic, d4, ..., dn) be the spectrum ofA, whereais the Perron eigenvalue,

is realizable. IfAis not (permutation) irreducible, thenAis permutationally similar to a block upper-triangular matrix with irreducible diagonal blocks. Let B be a diagonal block havingb+icas an eigenvalue andletsbe the Perron eigenvalue ofB. If the result holds forB, then we can modify the listσ by replacingsbys+ 2t and b+ic,b−icbyb−t+ic,b−t−ic, respectively, andobtain a realizable list for all sufficiently smallt≥0. But then, by the result of Guo [1], referredto in the abstract, ifsis different froma, we can now replaceabya+ 2t ands+ 2tbysandstill get a realizable list. Hence we can assume thatA=Bis irreducible. 3. Global case. Suppose thatσ= (a, b+ic, b−ic, d4, ..., dn ) is realizable with

Using [1] Lemma 2.2, we can assume that the vectoreof all ones is a Perron eigenvector ofAkfor allk,and, therefore, that the entries of all theAk lie in the interval [0, a+2z].

But now, the result of Section 2 implies that

It wouldbe interesting to know whether a rank one perturbation of A can be foundto realize the list for larger values oft.

Remark 3.2. As in the case of Guo’s result quotedin the abstract, the result

presented here is useful in studying the boundary of the set of realizable spectra. These applications will appear elsewhere. Meehan’s thesis [2] also contains some interesting observations on Guo’s question andproofs of some special cases of the theorem here.
