Permasalahan dengan Penggunaan Articles
Penggunaan articles bisa menyulitkan karena ada banyak aturan, pengecualian, serta kondisi-kondisi tertentu yang harus dipahami.
Di handbook ini, kalian akan mempelajari beberapa aturan dalam penggunaan articles sehingga dapat mengenali soal di written expression yang error dibagian articles.
Soal tentang articles bisa menjadi pertanyaan ‘bonus’ karena mudah sekali untuk dikenali kesalahannya, tetapi bisa tidak terlihat bila kita tidak memahami aturan penggunaan articles dengan baik.
Ada 3 jenis articles yang ada, yaitu “a, an, dan the”.
Articles “a” dan “an” hanya digunakan untuk benda yang dapat dihitung (countable nouns) agar menunjukkan jumlahnya yang tunggal.
Articles “a” dan “an” tidak bisa digunakan untuk benda yang tidak dapat dihitung (uncountable nouns).
Article “the” bisa digunakan untuk countable dan uncountable noun untuk menunjukkan benda tertentu secara spesifik.
Skill 52 : Penggunaan Articles untuk Countable dan Uncountable Nouns
Gunakan articles a dan an untuk benda yang dapat dihitung (countable nouns) dan menunjukkan jumlahnya singular atau tunggal.
Countable nouns harus memiliki penunjuk jumlah tunggal (a atau an) atau –s penunjuk jumlah jamak.
Contoh:
I have blue car
Kalimat ini salah, karena car termasuk benda yang dapat dihitung.
Bentuk kalimat yang benar adalah I have a blue car yang menunjukkan jumlah mobil biru ini tunggal atau I have blue cars yang menunjukkan mobil biru ini berjumlah lebih dari satu.
Countable nouns bisa juga menggunakan article the untuk menunjukkan benda tertentu secara spesifik.
Contoh:
I have the blue car at home.
Articles a dan an tidak bisa digunakan untuk benda yang tidak dapat dihitung (uncountable nouns)

Contoh:
I have a water.
Article a tidak dapat dipasangkan dengan water karena water termasuk uncountable nouns. Uncountable nouns tidak dapat dihitung atau dianggap berjumlah satu.
Tetapi, kita bisa gunakan the untuk uncountable nouns.
Perbedaan antara penggunaan articles a dan an adalah pada pengucapan kata benda yang diikutinya.
Bila kata benda yang diikuti tersebut diucapkan dengan lafal A, I, U,E, dan O atau huruf vocal, digunakan article an. Bukan dilihat berdasarkan huruf yang tertulis pertama pada kata benda tersebut.
Bila kata benda yang diikuti diucapkan dengan lafal konsonan, digunakan article a.
Contoh:
A university should provide the best service for its students.
Perhatikan kata benda university. Walaupun diawali oleh heruf vowel U,
digunakan article A bukan An. Alasannya karena pengcuapannya menggunakan lafal yuniversity, diawali oleh huruf konsonan y.
Contoh:
He left his home about an hour ago.
Perhatikan kata benda hour. Walaupun diawali oleh huruf konsonan h,
digunakan article an, bukan a. Alasannya karena pengucapannya menggunakan lafal our, diawali oleh huruf vowel o.
Notes:
Selalu perhatikan kata benda yang ada di soal. Bila digunakan countable nouns, pastikan ada penunjuk jumlah tungggal dengan article a atau an, atau penunjuk jumlah plural dengan –s. Bisa juga penunjuk jumlah lainnya yang sudha
dipelajari di skill sebelumnya seperti each, some, many, dan lain-lain.

Kalimat dalam latihan ini berisi countable dan uncountable nouns. Tentukan yang mana countable nouns dan apakah ada articles yang hilang atau tidak didepan nouns tersebut. Kemudian, tentukan apakah kalimat salah atau benar
Contoh:
1. She is taking trip with friends.
Answer: Kalimat salah. Seharusnya a trip karena kata trip termasuk countable noun. 2. In my yard there are flowers, trees, and grass.
Answer: Kalimat benar.

Exercise 52B Petunjuk:
Kalimat dibawah ini menggunakan articles a atau an. Tentukan apakah penggunaan articles a atau an pada noun yang ada benar atau tidak. Ucapkan kata bendanya untuk mengetahui apakah benda tersebut harus menggunakan articles a atau an. Kemudian, tentukan apakah kalimat tersebut salah atau benar.
Contoh:
1. The dishwasher quit his job because he was making only four dollars a hour.
Answer: Kalimat salah. Seharusnya an hour, karena kata hour bila diucapkan diawali dengan kata o, huruf vocal.
2. It was an unexpected disappointment to receive a rejection letter from the university. Answer: Kalimat benar. An unexpected dan a rejection benar.

Skill 53 : Penyesuaian Articles dengan Benda yang dirujuknya
Dalam bahasa inggris ada noun phrase yang terbentuk dari adjective dan noun, seperti beautiful dan girl, smart dan man, rich dan boy, dan lain-lain.
Pada frasa ini, kita harus paham apa yang noun yang dirujuk oleh article bila frasa ini menggunakan article didepannya.
Contoh:
He is a wise man.
Pada kalimat ini, article a merujuk pada man yang berjumlah tunggal, maka benar menggunakan a disini.
Kalimat akan salah bila ditulis: He is a wise men. Kata men adalah bentuk plural, sedangkan terdapat article a penunjuk jumlah singular. Disini perlu dipahami kesuaian antara article dan bentuk kata benda yang dirujuk; apakah sama-sama singular juga atau tidak.
Contoh:
I watched a horror movies last night.
Kalimat ini salah karena kata noun movie memiliki –s yang menunjukkan jumlah jamak, sedangkan didepannya ada article a penunjuk jumlah tunggal.
Kalimat bisa ditulis: I watched a horror movie last night atau I watched horror movies last night.
Aturan ini hanya berlaku untuk articles a dan an, sedangkan article the tidak masalah.

Kalimat dibawah ini menggunakan articles a atau an. Perhatikan kesesuaian antara articles a atau an dan noun yang digunakan dalam kalimat, kemudian tentukan apakah kalimat salah atau benar.
Contoh:
1. She went to school in a local community.
Answer: Article a merujuk pada community. Kalimat benar. 2. The doctor used an other pills.
Answer: Kalimat salah. Article an merujuk pada noun pills yang berbentuk plural. Seharusnya tidak perlu menggunakan article an karena noun berbentuk plural.

Skill 54 : Membedakan Articles yang Menjelaskan Umum dan Khusus
Articles a atau an tidak menjelaskan spesifik benda, dalam artian umum. Tetapi, article the digunakan untuk menjelaskan atau merujuk pada spesifik
benda.
Contoh:
Tom will bring the blue book tomorrow.
Dalam kalimat ini, buku yang akan dibawah Tom besok sudah spesifik.
Contoh:
Tom will bring a book tomorrow.
Dalam kalimat ini, Tom akan mebawa satu buku besok, buku apapun, tidak spesifik.
A atau an juga bisa digunakan ketika benda yang dijelaskan adalah satu dari banyak jenisnya.
Misal, He will arrive on a Tuesday in July. Ada banyak Tuesday dalam datu bulan Juli dan dia akan tiba di salah satu Tuesday di bulan Juli, tidka spesifik.
Contoh lain: He sailed on an ocean. Ada banyak oceans, jadi dia hanya berlayar di salah satu diantaranya.
Notes:
Perbedaan mendasar antara penggunaan articles a/and dengan the adalah a/an untuk benda yang umum sedangkan the untuk yang khusus.

Contoh:
1. He took a trip on a Snake River.
Answer: Article a disini merujuk pada trip yang umum tapi kemudian menjadi spesifik pada sungai tertentu, yaitu Snake River. Maka, seharusnya He took a trip on the Snake River.
2. I’ll meet you at the library later.
Answer: Penggunaan the didepan library sudah benar karena yang pembciara merujuk pada library tertentu yang dia dan yang diajak berbicara tahu.

I take a deep breath, close my eyes, and unlock my imagination. I allow my mind and body to become one, harmonize with my surroundings, and enable myself to find that place where I am perfectly content. Exhale. As I recollect, I am drawn to a scene from a movie. I try to concentrate on that image, but various sounds overwhelm my senses. A patch of blue dominates my vision. Suddenly, I am submerged in water. My eyes sting, and my imagination consumes my body. Silence. When I open my eyes, my senses are enlightened by the ocean’s clarity. I lift my head and am greeted by two familiar faces, Marlin the Clownfish and Crush the Turtle.
All things Finding Nemo are scattered about my bedroom—posters, stuffed animals and even a night light. Their presence causes the best scenes to replay in my mind when I meditate. I let my imagination explore and relive the lessons Marlin learned through his journey. Marlin’s experiences renewed his enthusiasm; he became a passionate, lively, and risk-taking child again. I no longer see him, but myself, learning the value of a creative engagement with life.
Imagination is the infrastructure of reality. When I teach at my church, I use my imagination to craft puppet shows for the children to keep them engaged with the material. I put a screen between the door and place a puppet in my dominant hand. I usually play the role of Fireball the Dragon, who often gets himself stuck in sticky situations. With the help of Ponder the Blue Monster, Fireball and the children learn the importance of friendship and Christian values. It makes me happy when I see them laughing and listening attentively during the show. My imagination allows me to connect with the kids on a more personal level, which helps me expand their horizons.
My creativity has also helped me throughout my science career. Last summer, I was selected to work with NASA engineers on eight extensive web-based assignments, which included designing a lunar colony, a Crew Transport Vehicle, and a space shuttle. At the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, I helped wire a rover that had an external structure of Legos and cardboard. I suggested adding the radiation shield of aluminum foil. Team Curiosity and I programmed the robot to respond to the inputs of a control pad, and we entered a challenge that required our robot to pick up Moon rocks and water samples under timed conditions.
21 When the competition began, our rover refused to cooperate and went out of bounds many times. Even after reprogramming it and replacing its arm, Curious George still could not pick up the rocks and bring them back to home base. Our failure was disheartening, but I didn’t let this experience discourage me from pursuing a STEM career.
I turned toward science when my mom was diagnosed with Lupus. Her symptoms did not become obvious until I was in middle school, and she began having difficulty climbing the stairs by herself. A year later, she started chemotherapy. Watching my mom battle with this has been extremely difficult, and I intend to use my knowledge of Lupus to treat others that are struggling. I will use my creativity to design advanced medical machinery that will save lives and help patients cope with pain.
Some days I wish I could go back in time to the childhood days with the adventure and curiosity that my unbounded mind translated into an undying love for Finding Nemo. While my movie preferences have changed, my imagination is still here and still constitutes the environments where I feel most content. I build robots, play with puppets, and find inventive ways to convey my visions. Science labs and church are just two among many stages where I perform, and my imagination is still the foundation of all my shows.
