Alhamdulillahirrobbil’alamiin, praise is to Allah SWT who has given His divine direction and guidance so that the researcher can accomplish his research paper with the title “An Effort to Improve Students‟ Involvement in Learning English through Interactive Activities (A classroom action research at the class VIII C of SMP N 2 Karanglewas in academic year 2012/2013)”. This research paper is presented as a partial fulfillment of the requirements for getting bachelor degree in English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. This research aimed to improve students‟ involvement in learning English through interactive activities. The method was Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was held at the VIII C class students of SMP N 2 Karanglewas in academic year 2012/2013 as the subject of the research. The number of students was 30. This study was done in February. The researcher worked collaboratively with the English teacher in the class.
The Classroom Action Research carried out based on Kemmis and McTaggart design. There were two cycles with two actions in each cycle comprising planning, acting, observing, reflecting, and evaluating. The data were collected using observation, questionnaire, interview, field note, and documentation.
The result of the data observation showed that the average of students‟ involvement in Cycle 1 was 35.83%, and the average of students‟ involvement in
Cycle 2 was 78.61%, so improvement from Cycle 1 to Cycle 2 was 42.78%. It has reached the criterion of the indicator success which was 40%. It was supported by the questionnaire result. The questionnaire result showed that the students gave the positive response toward Interactive Activities in learning English. Then, from the interview result, the students gave positive response and showed that the students felt happy, enjoyable, and enthusiastic in learning English. Based on the
data above Interactive Activities was able to improve students‟ involvement in learning English.
