FROM THE PASTOR

“To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.” (Rev. 21:6)

Perhaps no other book in the Bible solicits quite the reaction as the book of Revelation. Mention the word

“apocalypse” and people start to look scared. There are a lot of frightening images in the book and they don’t always make a lot of sense to us who live 2000 years after the book was written.

Throughout the centuries, people have used, or misused, the book of Revelation to create fear and anxiety, to predict the end of the world, and to justify a lack of charity toward others.

However, St. John wrote the Book of Revelation for an entirely different purpose. His goal was to give hope to Christians during his time that were facing widespread persecution. All of the imagery, even the scary ones, are meant to console and encourage Christians. They are meant to remind the reader that ultimately God is in charge. The Book of Revelation points to the fulfillment at the end of time of God’s definitive victory and the goal God has destined for humanity. Read as a whole, the Book of Revelation is a “revealing” of liberation in the midst of suffering. It echoes the hope that one day God himself “will wipe every tear from their eyes … Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more” (Rev 21:4). It is this hope, made present by faith, that calms the daily anxieties we face as we continue our pilgrim journey to heaven.

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK

FOCUS: The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is for anyone who is in danger of death, who is about to undergo a serious medical procedure, or who is weakened by age or sickness.

DATES:

Feb. 5ͶSt. Agatha, Virgin and Martyr

Feb. 6ͶSt. Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs

Feb. 10ͶSt. Scholastica, Virgin

This week is our monthly large group Family Formation

class. Families will be learning more about the sacraments, especially the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. A sacrament is an outward sign, instituted by Christ, to give grace. Throughout the New Testament Jesus showed great love for the sick. The sacraments are “efficacious,” meaning they actually accomplish what they communicate by signs. In the anointing of the sick, Christ is truly present to those who are suffering, to give them comfort, strength, reconciliation, and healing. In ancient days, warriors were often anointed with oils in preparation for battle. When we anoint the sick and dying, we recognize their struggle.

Sometimes the most difficult things to bear are not the physical pain but the spiritual and emotional battles. In the sacrament, Christ strengthens the soul so that they can endure and remain faithful. It is our duty as members of God’s family to care for those who are sick, and to encourage those we know who are eligible to receive the sacrament. Fr. Nathan wants everyone to know that he values visiting the hospital, nursing home, or the homebound and is never inconvenienced by it.

A MESSAGE OF HOPE

VERSE: “To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.” (Rev. 21:6)

FOCUS: What gives you hope today?

ACT: Encourage someone in need of hope.

PRAYER: O my God, I rely on your infinite mercy and promises.

“We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started

and know the place for the first time.”

ͲT. S. Eliot

School Matching Gi@s Update

We remain at $9,659, only because the deposit from the recent Benefit Concert has not yet hit the books. We raised almost $1,100 at the concert, so our total next week should be over $10,700. Connue to get the word out so we can meet the challenge goal of $25,000.

FINANCIAL COMMENTS

The past several weeks, I’ve published summaries of the parish’s financial situaon. It is my goal to be more transparent and help parishioners to be aware of the successes and challenges we have as a parish. Hopefully, you’ve had a chance to look at the material I’ve provided in the bullen. You can see that in some sense we are doing well. Although last week I challenged us to think about what we are NOT spending money on. I would like us as a parish to become more focused on our pastoral acvies as well as do a be;er job of preparing for the regular maintenance and upkeep of our facilies. And so with that in mind, I’ve discussed with the Finance Council my desire to form two important new subͲcommi;ees with the specific task of evaluang and proposing to us plans for both the buildings and grounds as well as the cemetery. This week I’m asking you to consider whether you might have the skills and gi>s that would be of benefit to either of these two subͲcommi;ees. If you are interested or have any quesons, please feel free to contact Fr. Nathan at nathan.march@portlanddiocese.org .

Buildings and Grounds SubͲCommiBee

Is charged with evaluang the parish assets and recommending to the Finance Council and the Pastor plans for the regular maintenance and upkeep of facilies and parish resources, as well as making long term plans for the sustainability of our parish buildings and property. I would like the commi;ee to do a thorough audit of our facilies. I would like the commi;ee to consider items such as boilers, roofing, interior renovaon or upkeep of our churches. This commi;ee would benefit from people with backgrounds in construcon, buildings, maintenance, painng, interior design, as well as finance, business, and even real estate.

Cemetery SubͲCommiBee

Is charged with evaluang the parish cemetery and recommending to the Finance Council and the Pastor plans for the maintenance and running of the parish cemetery. I would like the commi;ee to look at the cemetery assets, such as lawn equipment, truck, tractor and to make recommendaons for the most costͲeffecve way of running the cemetery. I’d be relying on the subͲcommi;ee to consider different possibilies from contracng services to leasing vehicles. The commi;ee would also evaluate current cemetery fees, costs, and policies. This commi;ee would benefit from individuals with backgrounds in lawn care, landscaping, grounds keeping, cemeteries, funeral services, as well as finance and business.

Four Chaplains Ceremony

Sunday, February 4

American Legion Hall

1:30 pm

Come join Father Nathan and area clergy in honoring the four chaplains (Methodist, Jewish, Catholic and Reformed Church in America) that sacrificed their lives in 1943 to save fellow shipmates aFer their ship, the USAT Dorchester, was torpedoed.

The chaplains sought to calm the men and organize an orderly evacua3on of the ship and helped guide wounded men to safety.

As life jackets were passed out to the men, the supply ran out before each man had one. The chaplains removed their own life jackets and gave them to others. They helped as many men as they could into lifeboats and then linked arms and, saying prayers and singing hymns, went down with the ship.
