ABSTRACT

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
Nowadays, children study English at a very young age. It is because
English language is an international language. Thus, it becomes important
to learn the language. However, learning English is difficult for some
people. In “10 Reasons Why English Is a Hard Language?” is stated,
“English is actually one of the hardest languages to learn in the world”
(par.9). During my internship, I realized that English language is not an
easy language to learn by students without support from parents or
teachers.
According to what I experienced during my internship at Bina Bakti 3
Elementary School as an English teacher from August until September
2013, I choose the topic “handling a second-grade student who had
difficulty in memorizing English vocabulary at Bina Bakti 3 Elementary
School”.
The student name is Michael. He found difficulty in memorizing English
vocabulary, for example, when I reviewed the first grade material in the
2 Maranatha Christian University On the other hand, the other students could remember all of the materials
from the first grade. In addition, when I explained the material to that
student, he could not understand it.
The reason why I discuss this topic is as a teacher, I should be able to
handle student who has difficulty in memorizing vocabulary so I can make
the student understand the materials which I teach. Thus, it becomes
important for me to find the solutions to this problem. Besides, the
solutions will help me to handle students who have the same problem
better. Therefore, I will analyze this problem critically and systematically,
based on the principles of scientific research, so I can figure out the best
solutions to my problem.
B. Identification of the Problem
The problem is I had a second-grade student who had difficulty in
memorizing English vocabulary at Bina Bakti 3 Elementary School. In this
term-paper I will figure out:
1. What made it difficult for the student to learn English?
2. How did the problem affect me as a second grade English teacher at
BinaBakti 3 Elementary School?
3. How should I handle students who have difficulty in learning English?
3 Maranatha Christian University The topic which I chose is “handling a second-grade student who had
difficulty in memorizing English vocabulary at Bina Bakti 3 Elementary
School”.
The target which I want to reach in the final of this paper is the best
solution that can fix the problem which I had during my internship at
BinaBakti 3 Elementary School. The benefit of reading this paper is it can
help every teacher or parent who has the same problem, and also for
BinaBakti 3 Elementary School which is the school where I did my
internship. In addition, I give them the potential solutions which might solve
the problem in their school. Lastly, my benefit of writing this paper for me
is not only to fulfill the graduation requirement, but also to get knowledge
in handling students who have the same problem.
D. Description of the Institution
Based on“35th Anniversary of Bina Bakti” pamplet, Bina Bakti 3
Elementary School has been operating since 1993/1994. At the beginning,
Bina Bakti 3 Elementary School only had 15 students and 2 teachers,
including Mr. Y. Suryo Herdianto, BA as the headmaster of Bina Bakti 3
Elementary School in that year. In 2013/2014, Bina Bakti 3 Elementary
School has 610 students with Mrs. Dede Priatin, S.Pd as the
headmistress. She has been the headmistress since 2013/2014 and will
continue until 2014/2015

Bina Bakti and the objective of national education. Opening units of
education’s services and supporting its implementation with supply the
source of the capacity which is needed (2).
E. Method of the Study
The data used in this paper was collected in my internship during
English lesson in July- September at Bina Bakti 3 Elementary School. The
process of collecting the data was by interviewing via Blackberry
Messengerand library research, as well as direct observing in the class
during the English lessons. The observation data have been recorded in
internship journal.
F. Limitation of the Study
The topic is “handling a second grade student who had difficulty in
memorizing English vocabulary at Bina Bakti 3 Elementary School”. The
number of subject which I will discuss is one person. The age of the
person is 7 years old. He is in the second-grade at Bina Bakti 3
Elementary School. This topic was observed on my internship during

G. Organization of the Term Paper
This term paper is divided into 4 chapters. Firstly, chapter 1 is an
Introduction. It contains the background of the study, identification of the
problem, objectives and benefits of the study, and the description of the
institution. Chapter 1 is also about the limitation of the study, method of
the study, and organization of the term-paper
Secondly, chapter 2 is Problem Analysis. In this chapter, I discuss the
problem, the causes and the effects of the problem. Every cause and
effect are supported by theories.
Thirdly, chapter 3 is Potential Solutions. In this chapter, I discuss the
three potential solutions which may help in handling the problem. The
potential solutions are also supported by theories.
The next is chapter 4. Chapter 4 is Conclusion. In this chapter, I give
the best solution that I choose. In addition, in this chapter, I give the
reasons why I choose those solutions to solve this problem.
The paper ends with a bibliography and appendices. Bibliography is about
the sources which are cited in chapter 1 until chapter 4. Appendices are

CONCLUSIONS
To sum up my paper about handling a second-grade boy who had
difficulty in memorizing English vocabulary at Bina Bakti 3 Elementary
School. First, I will state about the causes and the effects of the topic. The
first cause is the student often daydreamed during English class. The
second cause is the students seemed to be afraid to ask. The third cause
is the student had a family problem that influenced his study. Here are the
effects of the topic. The first effect is my lesson plan was ruined. The
second effect is I paid less attention to other students.
The potential solutions of my problem are I will initiate a private talk
with the student after the class, I will encourage the student to participate
actively in classroom, by group work, and I will initiate to talk with the
student’s parents. After having analyzed the potential solutions, I choose
all three of my potential solutions as the best solutions.
There are some reasons why I choose the three potential solutions as
the best solution. Firstly, talking privately with the student will build a
positive relationship between the student and I. Moreover, I can observe
17 Maranatha Christian University encouraging the student to participate actively in group-works will make
the student involved in discussing the material, and with a hope that he
can understand the material better. In addition, learning in a group-works
may reduce the student’s daydreaming tendency. The last but not least,
talking with the student’s parents about his academic performance may
encourage the parents to take a part to teach him at home. Furthermore, it
may encourage the parents to give him more attention. Moreover, all the
three potential solutions will give positive effects to the student’s academic
development, the student’s social skills and my teaching skill. Building
relationships with the students and their parents and also trying to
encourage the child to participate in classroom activities are important in
order to increase a child’s academic performance.
Thus, making the student feel relax by building positive relationship
with the student and the parents and also learning in group-works will
increase the student’s academic performance. I expect these chosen
