Wiley Edugen Server software - Possible Issues with Pop-Up Blockers

SUMMARY:

In our testing of these Edugen programs, we found that in general they were very robust and we do not recall encountering many times where the programs would not run at all. We have listed the various methods we found to either set each Pop-up blocker to allow the Edugen Software to run or to temporarily disable the Pop-up blocker software altogether. In many cases, the user can just hold down the CTRL key while either the main Edugen program window or each in-program window (Notes, etc.) loads.

The problems that were reported may be the result of some issue other than the presence of a Pop-up Blocker. From our experience in technical support, a situation in which a program will not start at all could possibly be because the user does not have sufficient rights to that system (particularly, on school or work computers), or because there is a conflict with one or more running programs. For the latter, we would suggest ending all background programs, and then trying to either install and/or run Edugen.

 For Windows 95, 98, or ME, hit the CTRL, ALT, and DELETE keys all at the same time and 'end task' for all the programs EXCEPT 'systray' and 'explorer'. Each time an item is 'end tasked', the Close Program window will close; hit CTRL, ALT, and DELETE to bring the window up again, and continue this process until the only items remaining are 'systray' and 'explorer'; then hit 'Cancel'.

 For Windows NT or 2000, hit the CTRL, ALT, and DELETE keys. Go into Task Manager and 'End Task' for all the programs that are running. If any icons remain in your System Tray (next to your taskbar clock), exit each of these as well.

 For Windows XP, hit the CTRL, ALT, and DELETE keys. Go into Task Manager, click on the "Applications" tab and 'End Task' for all the programs that are running. Next, click on the "Processes" tab, and then click on the User Name column header to sort the running processes by user. Click on the 'End Process' button to end each process EXCEPT explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe for your user name only - DO NOT end any processes that have SYSTEM, NETWORK SERVICE or LOCAL SERVICE next to them. Ending each process will produce a prompt regarding terminating processes; just answer 'Yes' to these, as all of these items will reload when the computer is restarted. When all processes have been ended, close the Task Manager window.

After ending all background tasks, try installing and running the Edugen software.

POP-UP BLOCKERS: 9.95 Popup Blocker 3.0

 We could not get this PUB to block anything – it didn't block any Edugen windows, or any other pop-ups ads, unless we specifically set it to do so.

 We did notice that ANY site can be added as a pop-up if we right-clicked on “Add Popup . . . [Edugen page]”, so it is possible that a user can mistakenly add Edugen to its “blocked” list. If this occurs, right-click on the system tray 9.95 icon, go to the Options menu, look for “Edugen . . .” on the list, and then remove it. Edugen should run after this.

STOPzilla 3.0.5.2

Internet Explorer

 As soon as "Edugen server is running" appears in the browser, STOPzilla kills it (closes Internet Explorer entirely). CTRL clicking does not have any effect. If you right click on the system tray icon for STOPzilla and select "Allow Pop-ups", Edugen launches and runs without issue. NOTE: The user should be reminded that they will have to re-enable this after using Edugen, and disable again for the next use.

without disabling the blocker. This must be done for the main window, and then for each small window (such as Notes, etc). This will stay in effect UNLESS the user wipes out the Blacklist (at which time the Edugen program will again be blocked, but they can again be added).

 Using the "Blacklist" to allow for user-specified pages to not be blocked is not supported in IE 5 - only IE 5.5 and higher. If the user has IE 5 or lower, they will have to disable the pop-up blocking before launching Edugen, and then re-enable it later.

Netscape

 This application only affects Windows Internet Explorer while running – this will have no effect on Netscape Edugen users.

Pop-Up Stopper Professional 1.60.1

Internet Explorer

 As soon as "Edugen server is running" appears in browser, Pop-Up Stopper Professional 1.60.1 kills it (closes Internet Explorer entirely). If you right click on the system tray icon for Pop-Up Stopper Professional 1.60.1 and uncheck "Block Pop-Up Add Windows", Edugen then launches and runs without issue. NOTE: The user should be reminded that they will have to re-enable this after using Edugen, and disable again for the next use.

 Holding the CTRL key while Edugen loads bypasses the blocking; doing the same for the in-program windows (Notes, etc) in Edugen also bypasses the blocking. NOTE: CTRL must be held EACH time, for EACH separate use of the various windows.

 If you want to have the blocker running and allow it to load Edugen, you can right-click on the system tray icon for Pop-Up Stopper, choose Options, and then configure the domain under "Allow Pop-Ups". This looks significantly more difficult than STOPzilla, so we would not advise this - use either the "disable" or "CTRL click" method.

Alta Vista Toolbar 1.0

Internet Explorer

 After installation, then AltaVista PUB is 'On' by default, as shown below, and thus automatically blocks Edugen.

 As soon as "Edugen server is running" appears in browser, AltaVista's pop-up blocker kills it (closes Internet Explorer entirely). There is no "workaround" that will allow this to bypass Edugen other than launching a browser window and clicking on the button (so that 'On' changes to 'Off').

 Please note that if the button is clicked to 'On' while Edugen is running, it will allow the main Edugen window to continue running, but will stop any of the other windows from launching. This should be left in the 'Off' position while Edugen is running. NOTE: The user should be reminded that they may want to re-enable this after using Edugen, and disable again for the next use.

Google Toolbar

Internet Explorer

 NOTE: Google PUB is 'On' by default, as shown below, and thus automatically blocks Edugen. The PUB feature in the Google toolbar requires Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher - this button will not appear on Internet Explorer 5 and lower.

 As soon as "Edugen server is running" appears in the browser, Google's pop-up blocker kills it (closes Internet Explorer entirely). If CTRL is held while the Edugen program is starting, the blocker is bypassed. NOTE: the 'On' / 'Off' button on the Google toolbar is to ALLOW or DIALLOW pop-ups for THAT SITE ONLY.

(5)

 If the user wants to completely disable the pop-up blocker features in the Google toolbar, they can: open their browser, click the 'Options' button on the Google Toolbar, and uncheck the Popup Blocker checkbox.

Netscape

 The Google Toolbar is supported in Windows Internet Explorer only and will have no effect on Netscape Edugen users.

Another Internet Explorer (AIE) Pop-Up Killer (freeware)

Internet Explorer

 The Main Edugen window is not blocked by this. The smaller in-program windows are.

 This small program cannot be configured specifically to allow or deny certain sites - to allow the small in-program windows to load, either hold down the CTRL key while clicking on the windows' buttons, or right click on the system tray icon for the blocker and select 'Suspend'. NOTE: The user should be reminded that they may want to re-enable this after using Edugen, and disable again for the next use.

Netscape

 This application only affects Windows Internet Explorer while running – this will have no effect on Netscape users.

AdBolish

Internet Explorer

 As soon as "Edugen server is running" appears in browser, AdBolish kills it (closes Internet Explorer entirely). Holding the CTRL key while Edugen loads bypasses the blocking; doing the same for the Notes, etc window in Edugen also bypasses the blocking. NOTE: CTRL must be held EACH time, for EACH in-program window as well.

 If you right click on the system tray icon for AdBolish and uncheck "Block IE Popup Adds", this will disable pop-up blocking - Edugen then launches and runs without issue.

 If you want to have the blocker running and allow it to load Edugen, you can right-click on the system tray icon for AdBolish, choose 'Display Program Settings', and then configure the domain under "Allow (whitelist)" for the pages. This looks significantly more difficult than STOPzilla, so we would not advise this - use either the "disable" or "CTRL click" method.
