Visiting Penyengat Island

Last September, I visited Penyengat Island with four of my friends from Jakarta. Penyengat Island is a small island near Tanjung Pinang, Riau Archipelago. From Tanjung Pinang, we took a small motor boat, called pongpong . We paid only six thousand each. The journey was short. It took only about fifteen minutes.

Then we looked around this tiny island with a bemo, a traditional transportation of Penyengat. Penyengat Island was very famous for Raja Ali Haji, a national hero of Indonesia. He was born and buried here. So we decided to go to Raja Ali Haji’s tomb complex as our first destination.

After we visited the ruins of Penyengat palace and the traditional house of Penyengat, we went to the old mosque of Penyengat. Inside the mosque , we saw many ancient things, such as and old handwritten koran and furniture.
