ABSTRACT

Writing is a way to express idea, thinking, feeling, that are arrange from the words into sentence in written form. Writing spoof text is involved into one of these skills that have to be mastered by the students. Writing spoof text is also involved in the curriculum of Indonesia Education for senior high school. But one important thing that has to be concerned in writing spoof is the grammar. So, the result of writing will be better if we can use the correct grammar, because the measure of grammar can cause misunderstanding. From this case, the writer wants to discuss their writing ability by mastering grammar. The objectives of this research is to know the correlation between students‟ grammar mastery and their ability in writing spoof text. The method of this research was descriptive quantitative method. The population of this research was 72 students which consisted of eleventh classes. The sample of the research was 36 students. The sampling technique was stratified random sampling technique. In data collecting technique was multiple choice for grammar mastery and essay test for writing ability. In analyzing the data the writer used multiple correlation formula. Based on the calculation in Chapter IV, it can be seen that rcount is 0.717. It means that rcount is more than 0.00. So there is possitive correlation or there is correlation between students‟ grammar mastery and their ability in writing spoof text.

Writing is a way to express idea, thinking, feeling, that are arrange from the words into sentence in written form. Writing spoof text is involved into one of these skills that have to be mastered by the students. Writing spoof text is also involved in the curriculum of Indonesia Education for senior high school. For the students who are interested in writing spoof text, it could be an interesting activity.

But one important thing that has to be concerned in writing spoof is the grammar. So, the result of writing will be better if we can use the correct grammar, because the measure of grammar can cause misunderstanding.

In this case, the writer wants to tell why the writer interested with this title. The writer interested with this title because the students have difficulties when they are writing a text especially spoof text. Spoof text is text which tells factual story, happened in the past time with unpredictable and funny ending. And the writer choose writing spoof text because most of students interested with funny story. If the students interested with funny story it can make easy the students to writing spoof text. And the way to make students interested with writing spoof, the writer explain and give the example of the story of spoof text in front of the class to make the students understand what is being taught. Grammar is one of the important things in mastering a language. By using grammar correctly in communicating, we can minimize the understanding to each other. So that grammar has an important role in arranging sentence. If we want make a composition in writing, we have to make sure that grammar of sentence is correct, in order to make people understand what we have written, it also supported by Harmer (2004:12) states that “the grammar of a language is the description of the ways in which words can change their forms and can be combined into sentences in that language.”

According to Freeman (2003:18) “grammar is about word order in sentences (syntax) and word formation processes (morphology); it is also about using the correct function words. Concerning the statement above, by mastering grammar, someone will know how to arrange a phrase, a clause, in correct sentences, and also it is very important for us to know how to use certain structures to make it possible to communicate in types of meaning successfully either in oral or written forms.

forms (or structures) are possble in a language.” It means that grammar is how a language formed by using good structure and put the word in the right place, so the students have to master grammar to increase their competence in English and to make them be able to communication.

According to Harmer (2005:4) “writing is used for a wide variety of purposes it is produced in many different forms. It means that writing is a process something in its final written form. This process may be affected by the content of writing type of writing and medium.

In writing process, the students must learn from the simple one and then to more complicated one, writing is a communication indirectly. So that, it tend to be well-formed, either organization and grammatical structure, or mechanics of writing. This statement is supported by Harmer (2005:44) “writing, like any others skill, has its „mechanical‟ components.

It is also supported by Gebhard (2009:212) “writers need to learn the basic conventions of writing. Teacher use a variety of activities to teach these conventions, namely:

1. One basic activity is tracing letters, words and sentences.

2. Another widely used activity is called copy and change then the students are given a passage and asked to copt it.

3. A simmilar activity involves teaching students a grammatical pattern and functional rules.

4. Another beginning-level activity is to have students unscramble muddled sentence part.

5. After the students gain some of the conventions of grammar, mechanics, spelling, and punctuation, they can take on more demanding task.

Spoof is text which tells factual story, happened in the past time with unpredictable and funny ending. Its social function is to entertain and share the story.

The generic structure of spoof text are :

1. Orientation : provides the setting and introduced participant. 2. Events : Tell what happened, in sequence.

3. Twist : Provides the punch line. Language Features :

1. Focusing on people, animals or certain things. 2. Using actors verb : (ate, run, etc)

Accoding to (Surakhmad, 1994:100) “if the population less than 100, the writer take 50% from the population”. So the sample of the research the writer took 50% from the population, that is 36 students.

the writer used stratified propotional random sampling technique, because the students‟ ability of achievement is heterogeneous. In this case the writer devided population into three levels are high, fair and low. Based on this population, the writer took sample that is also in range of high, fair and low. Total population : 72

Determining the research sample by using stratified random sampling technique.

1. Giving the try out test to 20 students out of the sample to know the validity and reliability of the grammar test.

2. Calculating the result of try out test to know the reliability of the grammar test.

3. Giving the instrument of the research or the grammar and writing test to the sample of the research.

To find the invariance frequency distribution of writing skill of spoof text, the writer used the following formula:

From the data above, it could be seen that: The highest score = 75

The lowest = 40

While the classes of criteria were divided into three classes, they were high, middle and low class. So the intervals of writing skill of spoof text were:

From this case, the writer interested to discuss students‟ grammar mastery and their ability in writing spoof text. The writer wants to make the students interested in learning english especially in writing spoof. And the way to make the students interested with writing spoof, firstly the writer explain and give the example of spoof text. After that, the writer was give try out test of grammar to know the students grammar mastery. And the writer found that the test items of grammar mastery could be used for the research as the instrument.

From the result of the data analysis above, the writer could say that there is high correlation between students‟ grammar mastery and their ability in writing spoof text. And it is understandable that mastering grammar well can significantly help students in writing spoof text. Furthermore, the result of the data analysis showed that the score of students‟ grammar mastery is commonly medium. Students in general, have limited competency in mastering grammar.

CONCLUSION

1. From the criteria of rratio by Suharsimi Arikunto, it can be concluded that the correlation between students‟ grammar mastery and their ability in writing spoof text is included in high criteria. It means that the degree of correlation is high.

2. Based on the calculation in Chapter IV, it can be seen that rcount is 0.717. It means that rcount is more than 0.00. So there is positive correlation or there is any correlation between students‟ grammar mastery and their ability in writing spoof text.
