ABSTRACT
This writing is entitled “The Indonesian translation of taboo words in the Hangover 1 & 2 Movies”. The aims of this study are to describe the types of taboo words, to analyze the taboo words mostly use, and to decide the translation type of the taboo words in the movies.
The data of this writing was taken from an American Black Comedy movie, The Hangover 1 & 2 movies. The data was collected through observation method and note taking. The data was analyzed through qualitative method.
The data analysis of this study used 2 theories. Jay’s theory of Taboo words (1992) which stated that there are 10 types of taboo words, they are: Cursing, Profanity, Blasphemy, Taboo, Obscenity, Vulgarity, Slang, Epithets, Insults and Slurs, and Scatology. Larson’s theory of Translation (1998) stated that there are 2 types of translation, Literal and Idiomatic translation.
The result of the analysis concludes that cursing type of taboo words is mostly used in both of the movies. In terms of translation, Idiomatic type of translation is dominantly found the movies when translated into Indonesian.
