On “All regular Landsberg metrics

Abstract. In his paper [2], Z. I. Szab´o claimed (Theorem 3.1) thatall suf-ficiently smooth Landsberg Finsler metrics are Berwald; this claim solves the long-standing “unicorn” problem. Unfortunately, as explained below, the proof of the statement has a gap.

M.S.C. 2000: 53B40, 53C60.

Key words: Finsler metric, Landsberg space, Berwald space.

Following [2], let us consider a smoothn−dimensional manifoldM with a proper Finsler metric F : T M → R. The second differential of 1

2F 2

|TxM will be denoted by

g=g(x,yx) and should be viewed as a Riemannian metric on the punctured tangent

spaceTxM− {0}.

the Berwald parallel transport along the curvec. Following [1], Z. I. Szab´o considers the following Riemannian metricgonM canonically constructed byF by the formula

(1.1) g(x)(ξ, η) :=

Z

yx∈TxM

F(x,yx)≤1

g(x,yx)(ξ, η)dµ(x,yx)

whereξ, η∈TxM are two arbitrary vectors, and the volume formdµonTxM is given bydµ(x,yx):=

p

det(g(x,yx))dy

x∧ · · · ∧dynx.

Z. I. Szab´o claims thatif the Finsler metricF is Landsberg, the Berwald parallel transport preserves the Riemannian metricg. According to the definitions in Section

2 of [2], this claim means that for everyξ, η, ν∈TaM

(1.2) g(a)(ξ, η) =g(b)(dνφ(ξ), dνφ(η)).

This claim is crucial for the proof; the remaining part of the proof is made of relatively simple standard arguments, and is correct. The claim itself is explained

very briefly; basically Z. I. Szab´o writes that, for Landsberg metrics, the unit ball

{yx∈TxM |F(x, yx)≤1}, the volume formdµ, and the metricg(x,yx)are preserved

by the parallel transport, and, therefore, the metricggiven by (1.1) must be preserved

as well.

Indeed, for Landsberg metrics, the unit ball and the volume formdµare preserved by the parallel transport. Unfortunately, it seems that the metricgis preserved in a slightly different way one needs to prove the claim.

More precisely, plugging (1.1) in (1.2), we obtain

(1.3)

Z

ya∈TaM

F(a,ya)≤1

g(a,ya)(ξ, η)dµ(a,ya)=

Z

yb∈TbM

F(b,yb)≤1

g(b,yb)(dνφ(ξ), dνφ(η))dµ(b,yb).

As it is explained for example in Section 2 of [2], for every Finsler metric, the parallel transport preserves the unit ball:

(1.4) φ({ya∈TaM |F(a, ya)≤1}) ={yb ∈TbM |F(b, yb)≤1}.

The condition that F is Landsberg implies φ∗dµ(a,ya) = dµ(b,φ(ya)). Thus, Szab´o’s

claim is trivially true if at everyya ∈TaM

(1.5) g(a,ya)(ξ, η) =g(b,φ(ya))(dνφ(ξ), dνφ(η)).

But the condition that the metric is Landsberg means that

(1.6) g(a,ya)(ξ, η) =g(b,φ(ya))(dyaφ(ξ), dyaφ(η))

only, i.e., (1.5) coincides with the definition of the Landsberg metric at the only point

ya=ν∈TaM.

Since no explanation why (1.3) holds is given in the paper, I tend to suppose that Z. I. Szab´o oversaw the difference between the formulas (1.5) and (1.6); anyway, at the present point, the proof of Theorem 3.1 in [2] is not complete. Unfortunately, I could not get any explanation from Z. I. Szab´o by email.

The unicorn problem remains open until somebody closes the gap, or presents another proof, or proves the existence of a counterexample; at the present point I can do neither of these.
