CATHOLIC CHARITIES
The 2019 Catholic Charities Appeal is under- way. Catholic Charities WNY serves all 8 coun- ties of Western New York. Last year, Catholic Charities helped over 150,000 people in Western New York. More than half were children. This year's Diocesan goal is $11,000,000. Our parish goal is $111,000. Thanks to your generosity, St.
John Paul II parish met and exceeded its goal last year. Please be as generous as possible in support- ing this year's Appeal.
A Lot Can Change In A Year Because of You!
We have a finite amount of time each year to make a difference. And while that time seems short, and the list of people in need grows long, the impact we can have is infinite – for those we can help and for the community as a whole.

BOOK CLUB
From the Introduction of THE MYSTERIES OF FATHER BAKER by John Koerner: “The Catholic Diocese of Buffalo was especially gracious and helpful in providing research material. We again thank them here for allowing the author access to the Diocesan archives and providing written approval to publish what I have uncovered. In return I have ensured that the privacy of the indi- viduals who have come forward has been strictly maintained.”
We will meet and discuss this book Thursday, April 11th. Ques- tions, contact Joyce at 627-2279.
RESPECT LIFE
They Say: Informed consent statutes are designed to discourage women from abortion.
We Say: Such statutes are designed to present the facts about abortion and the unborn. Of course, those facts speak for themselves, and many women, once they are fully informed of the facts, will reject abor- tion and make the natural choice for life. That result poses a problem for abortion advocates, because they are really more pro-abortion than “pro-choice.”
A MUST SEE: The pro-life movie UNPLANNED becomes available at local theaters on March 29th. It’s the true story of a former Planned Parenthood leader’s eye-opening journey to be- coming a very compelling pro-life advocate. Abby Johnson’s experience gives face to the reality of abortion. It is also an en- couragement to the many who sacrifice much on behalf of unborn babies and their mothers. Please check your local listings for details.
WITH ONE VOICE
AROUND THE DIOCESE
Growing up in a neighborhood riddled with gang activity, Jah- Keem was just 9 when he fell in with the wrong crowd. By age 10, he was working as a mule carrying drugs. Despite his moth- er’s best effort, he continued down that troublesome path until his mother moved them to a new neighborhood. While he stayed out of trouble, Jah-Keem did find himself falling behind in school academically and it wasn’t long before he dropped out. With no diploma and no job, Jah-Keem’s cousin suggested Catholic Charities. Upon his arrival, he linked up with James from the agency’s Workforce and Education Services to obtain his high school equivalency degree. “Coming to Catholic Charities was the best move I ever made,” he said. “James told me he saw potential in me and nobody but my momma ever told me that before.” To- day, Jah-Keem has his diploma in hand and is working a full-time job. Will you help others like Jah-Keem find hope?

FAITH MOMENT REFLECTION
In today's Gospel, Jesus tells us the parable of the fig tree. It's a story ripe with a lesson on the importance of following through with what God calls us to do. The fig tree had a purpose – it was planted to bear fruit. When the tree didn’t produce, the orchard owner was ready to remove it. But the gardener had great pa- tience and continued to tend to the fig tree in hope that it would eventually blossom. We are like the fig tree – God has a purpose for us. He wants us to enjoy the fruits of a good life with one an- other. God is tremendously patient, always working the soil of our lives and giving us what we need. Now we must follow through. It’s not enough to have good intentions. What should we be doing – or not doing – to bear fruit for God? Today's Faith Moment was provided by Christ the King Seminary. You can listen to Faith Moments on WBEN radio 930 AM, WLOF 101.7 FM, or at www.faithmomentsonline.org.

CONGRATULATIONS SUE JASINSKI
Sue Jasinski was the recipient of the Lay Award of Saint Joseph the Worker, awarded by Most Rever- end Richard J. Malone, Bishop of Buffalo. The award was received at a Mass of Celebration at St. Joseph Cathedral on Saturday March 16th.
Many of Sue’s family, friends, and coworkers were in attendance to recognize Sue as a “Special” recipi- ent. Anyone who has ever attended a reception, luncheon or pot luck supper at our church or school has met Sue! She manages the kitchen in the parish Community Room, and volunteers in the school kitchen. But that’s not all that Sue does for our parish fami- ly. She is active in many Parish Ministries including the Evangeli- zation Committee, the Pre-Cana Ministry, the Wedding Assistants Ministry, just to mention a few. In addition to her volunteer work here at the parish, Sue is constantly present to her large, loving family. Sue is a wonderful example of someone who is a true
‘worker for the Lord’, and she is a very worthy recipient of the St.
Joseph The Worker Award from the Diocese of Buffalo. Please congratulate Sue when you see her!

ROCK CANDY SCIENCE
Students in Mr. Stirk's 8th grade Science class, pictured on the left, made Rock Candy. They used water, sugar, a hot plate, scale, thermometer and a skewer.
Each group had to use the Solubility Curve to figure out how to make a super saturated solution of sugar and water. When the sugar was dissolved, they placed the skewer into the solution and as the water cooled, the sugar was
attracted to the stick to form rock candy.
Who knew that the "S" in STREAM could also be Sweet!
A VOCATION VIEW
Third Sunday of Lent - March 24, 2019
At the sight of the burning bush, Moses was responsive to God’s call, while his followers were too self-righteous to hear it. God’s call will only lead us to what is best for us. If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Fr. Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. You can also check out the
“Priest of the Month” stories on our website - www.buffalovacations.org.
ARE YOU ENCOURAGING AND PRAYING FOR VOCATIONS?
Are you and your family praying for vocations? Are you encouraging someone you think might make a great priest, religious or deacon? There could be someone here in our parish, maybe across from you in the church, or possibly even sitting in your pew. Please continue to pray for vocations.
PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS!
Dear Holy Spirit!
Please help those who hear Your call only as a whisper, that they may know that it is You calling them to service. May You fill those You call with the grace and courage to respond to Your whisper. I will pray, encourage and support those whom You have chosen for church vocations! Amen.
SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
In today’s Gospel Jesus is quite clear in His message: “bear fruit or be cut down.”
This Lent we are called to cultivate and fertilize our spiritual lives through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
Through your almsgiving you are performing a good work; far greater than you think. Know that your nickel, dime or quarter is multiplied by the coins placed by others in the St. Vincent De Paul Poor Box.
If you know anyone in need, please contact the parish office at 627-2910, and we will put you in touch with the Society of St. Vincent De Paul.
