8 FROM THE EDITOR
United We Engineer
Built together, hardware and software
can do more, and do it faster.
T
he interdependence of hardware andsoftware means that each component is built to the standards and requirements of the other components. But that same interdependence also means that when one vendor engineers both the hardware and the software, tightly integrated, standards-based systems can deliver better performance and results for your business.
EVERY PORT IN THE DATA STORM
I started working at Oracle in a porting group. This particular group worked on porting the Oracle Database kernel software from its primary port to a variety of other ports—combinations of operating systems and hardware—from different vendors. The same software kernel was deployed for each of these ports, with whatever software cus-tomizations that were required by the par-ticular operating system and hardware.
One aspect of porting involved addressing limitations in the operating system and hardware of a port that affect the ported software’s performance and functionality. On more than one occasion, I recall porting developers wishing a hard-ware or softhard-ware vendor would add some support or fix a bug that would enable the full functionality and performance of Oracle Database on that port.
ENGINEERED TOGETHER
At Oracle OpenWorld 2010 in San Francisco, California, Oracle announced many new hardware and software products and several combined hardware and soft-ware products that demonstrate the benefit of hardware and software engineered to work together.
Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud (“cloud in a box”) is the world’s first and only inte-grated middleware machine. It combines 64-bit processors with key Oracle Fusion Middleware components—including Oracle WebLogic Server, Oracle Coherence, and Oracle JRockit—to consolidate, manage, and run Java and non-Java applications at more than 1 million HTTP requests per second in an elastic and secure private cloud. And the combination and optimiza-tion of the included Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud hardware and software is key to this extreme performance.
Oracle’s new Exadata Database Machine X2-8 combines Oracle Database 11g, Oracle Real Application Clusters, Oracle Enterprise Manager, and Oracle Exadata Storage Software with two 8-socket data-base servers with 128 CPU cores, 14 Oracle Exadata Storage Servers with 168 CPU cores, and Oracle’s Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel for Oracle Linux or Oracle Solaris Express 11 in a complete private cloud. The combina-tion and optimizacombina-tion of Oracle Exadata Storage Server hardware and software is key to the performance of this and all Oracle Exadata database machines. And the new Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel provides the scalability to support the 8-socket servers and 128 CPU cores of the Exadata Database Machine X2-8.
Not coincidently, the Exadata Database Machine X2-8 is the ideal database and data storage platform to integrate with and support the extreme application perfor-mance of Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud.

Oracle Transparent Data Encryption and

Data at rest is data at risk.
That’s why Thales and Oracle have partnered to
integrate Oracle Database 11g/11gR2 with Thales
nShield Hardware Security Modules (HSMs). As a
result, you can leverage Oracle Advanced Security
Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) with the
enhanced security and operational efficiencies that
only hardware-based, centralized database key
management can deliver.
It really is an ideal combination. Use Oracle Advanced
Security TDE for database encryption to secure
the most sensitive contents of both new and
existing database deployments. Use Thales nShield
HSMs to provide an isolated, tamper-resistant
vault for encryption keys and easily demonstrate
data and key separation – a universal security
best practice that provides a significantly higher
level of security than software encryption alone.
Best of all, Thales nShield HSMs will help your
organization more easily and efficiently meet PCI
DSS and other compliance requirements by
protecting sensitive TDE encryption keys in a scalable,
FIPS certified hardware module.

hen 41,000 people from 116 countriesconverge on San Francisco, California, for three conferences in one, it’s clear that the spirit of innovation in technology is alive and well. From September 19 through 23, 2010, Oracle OpenWorld, JavaOne, and Oracle Develop ran concurrently and offered attendees a look at the latest products and services from Oracle, its partners, and the technology community in general. Attendees chose from more than 1,800 sessions, 400 partner exhibits, and hundreds of live demos, plus keynotes from industry luminaries.
Oracle executives showcased a range of hardware and software products engineered to work together. Notable product releases included Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, Oracle’s Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, Oracle Fusion Applications, Oracle’s Exadata Database Machine X2-8, SPARC T3 processor and SPARC T3 systems, and Oracle Solaris Express 11. Oracle also laid out a roadmap for Java in the enterprise, on desktops, in mobile technologies, and in Web browsers.
Between keynotes, sessions, and exhibits, attendees took advantage of numerous opportunities to network and unwind. The Welcome Reception and OTN Night got the week off to a great start, and at the attendee-favorite Appreciation Event, Grammy Award winners The Black Eyed Peas and Don Henley kept the party going. Finally, the It’s a Wrap! party gave attendees one last chance to celebrate. Throughout the week, the Mason Street Tent provided a gathering place in the center of the JavaOne and Develop action, where attendees could build LEGO creations, drink a micro brew, and watch live Oracle
Technology Network shows.
Oracle OpenWorld, JavaOne, and Oracle Develop attracted thousands of tech-nology enthusiasts from around the world.

Oracle Updates Data Integration Line
Oracle has released Oracle GoldenGate 11g and Oracle Data Integrator Enterprise Edition 11g, two updated products in its data integration family. Oracle GoldenGate 11g delivers real-time data integration and continuous availability for mission-critical systems. Oracle Data Integrator Enterprise Edition 11g delivers fast, efficient loading and transformation of timely data into a data warehouse environment. Both of these new releases offer tighter integration with Oracle applications and technologies, support for additional heterogeneous systems, and per-formance enhancements.
Integration updates in Oracle GoldenGate 11g include the following: certification for operational reporting solutions on Oracle E-Business Suite and Oracle’s PeopleSoft Enterprise and JD Edwards applications; certification with Oracle Exadata Database Machine; and new native delivery to Oracle TimesTen databases. Updates in Oracle Data Integrator Enterprise Edition 11g include integration with Oracle JDeveloper and Oracle Enterprise Manager.
Expanded support for heterogeneous systems and interoperability enhancements
in Oracle GoldenGate 11g include the fol-lowing: support for log-based capture from, and delivery to, IBM DB2; capture from Java Message Service–based messaging systems; and delivery to IBM DB2 for iSeries. Oracle Data Integrator Enterprise Edition 11g
provides additional support for online ana-lytical processing systems including Oracle Essbase as well as support for applications and extended APIs that can be embedded directly within custom applications.
In terms of performance, Oracle GoldenGate 11g provides simplified recovery to significantly reduce the recovery window for long-running transactions that experi-ence interruption.
