CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1Background Of Study

Man is a social creature, he can not live by himself. According to Hossain, F.M.A. and Ali, man has to live in society for his existence and welfare. In almost all aspect of his life he feels the need of society. Biologically and psychologically he is compelled to live in society. Because a complete isolated life is unbearable for him and he can not develop into a normal individual in isolation. The essence of the fact is that man has always belonged to a society of some sort, without which he can not exist at all. Society fulfills all his needs and provides security to him. He took birth, grows, live and die in society. Without society his life is just like fish out of water (131). Elements of a community. Smaller communities of human is friends and friendship .

De Vries in Definitions Of Friendship In The Third Age: Age, Gender, And Study Location Effects,a person said to be the best friend appreciating

(12)

relationship with someone who appreciates the loyalty, trustworthiness, and has the same pleasure.

Friendship becomes theme or issues in many literary. Literature plays an important role in the life of society. Literature is a way to realize a thought, experience, and human feelings in various dimensions of life. According to Bannet and Royle (35) literature is the kind of writting which most persistently and provocatively engages with the uncanny aspects of exprience, thought and feeling. Wherea, Wellek and Werren (15) said that literature is the art of written works. Because literature use typical language literature which is different with colloquial language or the language of science.

John Peck and Martin Coyle in Literary Terms and Criticism (102) said that literature has genre. Genre means a typ e or class of literature, it is known as poetry, drama and the novel, different from earlier times the major genre recognized as epic, tragedy, lyric, comedy and satire. Novels are all about human condition or people in society. Writers have always been interested in term of human life, the development of the novel reflects a view of life towards a new interest in the complexities of everyday experience. Most novels are concerned with ordinary people and the problems in societies in which they find themselves.

(13)

confrontation, and problematic situation, which usually come from their own family or society (John Peck and Martin Coyle, 110).

We must analysis literary to understand literary work, because literary work is a complex structure. According to Pradopo analysis is one of medium to interpretation (2008: 93).

One of literary works that will analyze the researcher is The Scorch Trials by James Dashner. Because the theme of The Scorch Trials is friendship. The Scorch Trials is novel by James Dashner and the second book in the Maze Runner Saga. It is preceded by The Maze Runner, and followed by The Death Cure, then by The Kill Order, and finally The Fever Code.

According to the researcher, The Scorch Trials is interesting to study, because in this work James Dashner shows how important a good companions, and teach about caring for a companions. In The Scorch trials the author shows a lot of things that should be owned by companions, such as protecting companions, keeping, helping, and loving companions. Thomas is the main character in this novel, and he is a good friend to his companions. His character is not much different from prophet’s companion. Thomas is a friend who really cares of his friends, he keeps his friend as keeping himself. The researcher chooses Thomas to become the object of this analysis, because Thomas is the main character and he has a very high concern than others.

Based on the explanation above the researcher would discuss about how characteristic of prophet’s companions reflected by Thomas as main

CHAPTER II Literary Review

This study focuses on discussing a theory which is going to be used as a guidance analysis the novel of The Scorch Trialsby James Dashner. The research focuseson analysis character. Main theory used in research is new criticism. This study are explained as follow.

2.1 Psychology Literature

Basic assumptions of psychology of literature, There is a close relationship between psychology and literature, psychology deals with the study of observable patterns of human’s behavior, literature exhibits how human beings behave in

dealing with their problems and environment.

Psychology of creative processes, The “creative process” should cover the entire sequence from the subconscious origins of a literary work to those last revisions which, with some writers, are the most genuinely creative part of the whole (Wellek, 1956: 8). The poet is a maker of poems; but the matter of his poems is the whole of his percipient life. With the artist, in any medium, every impression is shaped by his art; he accumulates no inchoate experience (Wellek, 1956: 8).

(19)

Psychoanalytic Perspective. Mental life is divided into two levels, namely: the unconscious and the conscious, t he unconscious contains all those drives, urges, or instincts beyond consciousness but motivate all words, feelings, and actions. The unconscious has two different levels: the unconscious proper (id) and the preconscious (superego). People are motivated primarily by drives (libido) of which they have little or no awareness. Behavior represents the conscious self and the repressed desire.

Biologically and psychologically human being is compelled to live in society.

2.1.1 Friendship

(20)

empathy where everything may be made on the basis of honesty, loyalty, and commitment; b) Shared and communal. participation in joint activities, common ground, and member and receive help rather than shapeaffective support; c) Sociability element friend is a source of entertainment, enjoyment, and recreation ( qtd in Fauziah 85). Based on explanation above we can conclude that friendship is characterized by caring and sharing personal feelings and other related to exploration such as intimation, appreciation, and concern and friendship is explained as the giver of support, emotional support and empathy where everything may be made on the basis of honesty, loyalty, and commitment.

2.2New Criticism

According to Tyson in Critical Theory Today, the new critics introduced to America and called close reading. It means that new critical focuses on the reader’s attention on the literary work as the sole source of

evidence for interpreting the text, so that Tyson also called new criticism as the text itself (Tyson 136). The images, symbol, metaphors, rhyme, meter, point of view, setting, characterization, plot and so on (137). Based on defiition above new criticism is theory that focuses on the reader’s attention

(21)

2.3.1 Character

Character often comes in fiction story, something identifies them, and sometimes judges them. Indeed, one reason we read stories is to find out what happened to an equally compelling reason and to follow the fortune of the characters ( Di Yani 54). A character is presumably an imagined person who inhabits a story. If the story seems true to life, we generally find that the characters act in a reasonably consistent manner and that the author has provided them with motivation (Kennedy 77).

Based on definition above, character is important thing in fiction story, because sometimes character can judge fiction story . Usually one reason why the readers interests is to read stories to follow the fortune of the characters. Stories seem true to life if characters act in a reasonably consistent manner.

Characters in fiction can be conveniently classified as major and minnor, static and dynamic. A major character is an important figure at the center of the story’s fiction theme. The major character is sometimes

called a protagonist whose conflict with an antagonist may spark the story’s conflict. Supporting the major character is one or more secondary

(22)

Supporting the major character is minor character, they can illuminate the major character.

The major character is usually round characters. Round characters, however, present us more facets. Such as round character, it may appear only as he appears to the other characters in the story. We will see round characters from more than one side. Round characters are often changed, but flat characters tend to stay the same throughout a story ( Kennedy 78). Sometimes Major character becomes round character, because the reader can see main character from more than one side.

Minor characters are often flat characters. A flat character has only one outstanding trait or feature, or at most a few distinguishing marks. It can be seen only one aspect of their personalities, because the author does not need to reveal more about them for the purposes of the story ( Kennedy 78). Minor characters are often static or unchanging that they remain the same from the beginning of a work to the end. As the story progresses , it also can be dynamic characters that exhibit some kinds of change ; of attitude, pupose and behavior ( Di Yanni 54). Based on explanation above, Minor characters are often flat characters, because the author does not need to reveal more about them for the purposes of the story.

(23)

developing. The static character is the same sort of person at the end of the story as at the beginning. The developing or dynamic character undergoes a permanent change in some aspects of character, personality, or outlook (Perrine 70). Based on definition above characters may be classified as static or developing. Static character is the same sort of person from the beginning of story until the end. But The developing character undergoes a permanent change in some aspects of character, personality, or outlook. There is change of character in developing character.

2.3.2Characterization

Characterization is what the writers present and reveal character. The characterization can be described through narrative summary without judgment, narrative description without implied or explicit judgment, surface details of dress and physical appearance, character’s

action, character’s speech, and character’s consciousness ( Di Yanni 54).

Based on explanation above characterization is what writers explain about character and characterization can be described through narrative summary.

(24)

say or do ( Perrine 67 ). Based on explanation above, authors present characters in the story by exposing what the characters are like. Authors present completely about characters, but sometimes authors show characters in action, and readers infer what they are like from what they think, say or do.

According to Robert Di Yanni, there are six major methods of revealing character in fiction. First, narrative summary without judgment. Second, the characterization can be depicted through narrative description with implied or explicit judgment ( Di Yanni 54). The narrative description with implied judgment means that the authors describe the character’s characterization by giving some craracteristic

and the readers conclude themselves. Then, the narrative description explicit judgment means that the author is like: naughty, beautiful, shy, and so on. Third, surface details of dress and physical appearance (56). Characterization can be depicted through physical appearance. Although, in real life most of us be aware of appearance which is often deceiving, but in fiction details of appearance it often provides clues to character. in including everything from dress or style and body language. Fourth, character’s action means what they do (56). Characterization can be

depicted through the action of character’s do. Fifth, what they say and

(25)

feel. The author describe in detail what passes through a character’s awareness.

There are many kinds of characterization. They are loyal, caring and loving. According to Gurbaksh Chahal in The Foundational Characteristic, Loyalty is the foundation of relationships are built from

Chapter III

Analysis

The novel that is taken to be studied in this research is The Scorch Trials. It is a 2010 young-adult dystopian science fiction novel by James Dashner and the second book in the Maze Runner Saga. In this chapter researcher will analyze about Thomas’ friendship and Rasulullah’s

Companions. 3.1Characterization

Based on the categories of the characters presented in the previous chapter, researcher specifies the discussion of character on the main character of the novel chosen. Thomas is main character in the novel chosen by researcher. Thomas is major character in the novel because he is vital to the divelopment and resolution the conflict.

(27)

3.1.1Thomas’ Loving To Companion

Thomas loves his companions. It is described by the author of the novel. Here are some evidences that support researcher argument related Thomas’ characterization in The Scorch Trials by James

Dashner.

Wake up! he yelled at himself. Wake up! Then something disappeared from inside him. There one instant, gone the next. He felt as if a majororgan had just been ripped from his body.It had been her. She was gone. Teresa! he screamed out with his mind. Teresa! Are you there? ( Chapter 2 : 11).

The evidence about Thomas’ loving to companion. The quotation above shows us Thomas’ feeling when lost his friend. He felt

as if a mojororgan had just been ripped from his body.

“happen to Chuck had been bad enough. Bad enough? he

thought. Or was seeing Chuck die worse? Thomas wanted to scream. Aris looked up finally, wiped a couple of tears from his cheeks. He did it without the slightest hint ofshame, and

Thomas suddenly knew that he liked this kid.” (Chpater 6 :

25).

The evidence about Thomas’ loving to companion. The quotation above shows Thomas’ wrath when remember happen to

chuck. He cries because remember chuck death.

And then she was gone. Despite her warning, he tried calling

for her again, but the same emptiness he’d felt since that

(28)

Amazingly, no one bothered him or asked him what was wrong. His stifled sobs finally faded into an occasional hitched breath, and eventually he fell asleep. ( Chapter 8 : 32).

The evidence about Thomas’ loving to companion. The quotation above shows Thomas’ feeling when his friend gone, he can not find his

friend. He cries because one again of his friend gone.

“Yeah. I did see a really good friend die, though. Every time I think about Chuck I get ticked off all over again. If they’vedone the same thing to Teresa, they won’t be able to stop me. Nothing will. They’ll all die.” ( Chapter 17:65).

The evidences about Thomas’ loving to companion. When Thomas think that there is bad something befall his friend , he felt as if a major organ had just been ripped from his body. He was terrified his friend experience something terrible. Even when he thought that a friend is fine, a sudden relief burst through Thomas. It was so strong he almost had to sit down. It is obvious that he loves his friend so much. He didn't want bad things to happen at his friend.

(29)

“Look,” Newt said. “Let’s take down these top beds and move them around the room. Then we can all sit and figure out what’s bloody going on.” Thomas shook his head. “No. First, we need to go find Teresa. She must be in some other room.”“Isn’t one,” Minho said. “What do you mean?” “I just checked this whole place out. There’s the big common area, this room, our dorm room, and some seriously shucked doors that lead outside—where we came in from the bus yesterday. Locked and chained from the inside. Doesn’t make any sense, but I don’t see any other doors or exits. Thomas shook his head in confusion. It felt like a million spiders had just spun cobwebs through his brain. ( Chapter 5: 20).

Thomas very anxious on Teresa, unlike his friends who are not so worry about Teresa. As in the quote above, while his friends are busy preparing a place to negotiate, Thomas still trying to search for Teresa. Thomas’ loving to his companions stand-out, it is evident from

quotation above. From what researcher quotes proved that Thomas have a sense of love on his friends.

3.1.2Thomas’ Loyalty To Companion

Thomas’ loyalty to companion described the author of the novel.

Here are some evidences that support researcher argument related Thomas’ characterization in The Scorch Trials by James Dashner.

“I just have one condition. That ratty kid who junked me onthe

ground? Think I heard you call him Minho?”“Yeah?” Thomas

asked in a weak voice, his heart thumping all over again.“He dies.” “No.”Thomas said it with every ounce of finality and firmness he could muster.“No?” Jorge repeated with a look of surprise. “I offer you a chance to make it through a city full ofvicious Cranks ready to eat you alive, and you say no? (Chapter 28: 97).

The first evidence about Thomas’ loyalty to companions, the

(30)

bring Thomas to the place which he headed, Jorge is willing to help him but on the condition that he must kill his friend because Jorge hate his friend that made him angry. But Thomas firmly refused, he did not betray his friend although he need help Jorge to drive her to a safe place. Thomas give many reason in order that Jorge abrogate his request to kill his friend. It is evidence that Thomas loyal to his friend. He refuses Jorge’s request to kill his friend although Thomas need Jorge to help

him. He still loyal to his friends. It is evidence about Thomas’ loyalty to companion.

“We don’t have timefor this! You have five seconds to choose the one who stays. Don’t choose and they both die. One.”“Wait!” Thomas looked at Brenda, at Jorge. They both stared at the floor, said nothing. Their faces palewith fear.“Two.”Thomas suppressed the rising panic, closed his eyes. There was nothing new here. No, he understoodthings now. Knew what he had to do.“Three.”No more fear. No more shock. No more questioning. Take what comes. Play along. Pass the tests. Passthe Trials.“Four!” The man’s face

reddened. “Choose right now or they both die!” ( Chapter

62:202).

The third evidence about Thomas’ loyalty to companions. When

someone command to kill of both Thomas’ friends, but he refused, Until

(31)

himself. It is evidence about Thomas’ loyalty to companions . Thomas still loyal to his companions although he get dangerous situation.

3.1.3Thomas’ Caring To Companion

In The Scorch Trials by James Dashner, Thomas also described as a friend that care to his companions. Here are some evidences that support researcher argument related Thomas’s charcterization.

“So much had happened, where could he start? Not to mention that worry over Teresa was making his head spin, making him want to run out of the room and search for her immediately.” “We’ve got all day to talk to this Aris guy. The label by the door said Teresa should be here somewhere—we need to find

her!” (Chapter 5:22).

The first evidence about Thomas’ caring to companions. Thomas

worries to his friends when he not together with his friends. He always afraid that bad something happen to his friend until make him want to run everywhere to find his friend. Thomas worries to his friend because he care to his friends. It is evidence about Thomas’s careness to companion

The sounds of destruction behind them faded as they ran down this new path, and panic lit up insideThomas. “What about my friends? What if—”He worried about the Gladers, but instinct told him it was okay to stay with Brenda—that his friends would be able to fend for themselves if they’d gotten out. But what if some of them had been captured by whoever had set off the explosion? Or killed? And who had attacked them? Concern seemed to bleed his heart dry as they ran along (Chapter 30:106).

(32)

Gladers. Where were they? He felt like such a shuck-face for not looking for them, seeing if they were in trouble. Could they have already made it safely outside of town? (Chapter 31:110).

The third evidence about Thomas’ caring to companions. When

Thomas heard the sound of an explosion, he remember his friends, and worry about them, he is afraid that bad something happened to them, he worries they were killed. He not worries himself, but Thomas more worry his friend. He blamed himself for not being able to protect his friends. It is clear that Thomas care to his companions. Thomas’s anxiety to his companions is proof from his careness.

3.2 Thomas’ Friendship

Relationship between Thomas and his companions in the novel included of categories of the friendship. The categories of the friendship presented in the previous chapter. They have friendship's affective, caring and sharing personal feelings, they also shared and communal participation in joint activities, common ground, and then they have sociability element (a source of entertainment, enjoyment, and recreation).

3.2.1 Friendship's Affective Between Thomas And His Companion

(33)

“Bad dream?”Thomas settled himself, closed his eyes. “Yeah. I can’t quit worrying about my other friends. I just hateit so bad

that we were separated.” (Chapter 35:122).

Thomas and friends mutual affection on each other. The evidence that they loved each other, as author in chapter thirty five, the fact that Thomas could not stop to worry his friend when they are not shared, and also hate when he parted ways with his friend.

Minho smiled, a very welcome sight. Especially considering how horrible the guy looked. “We’d justfound you. Did you think we were gonna let these bunch of shuck-faces do anything to you? You owe me.Big-time.” He walked over and started cutting the tape.“What do you mean you’d just found us?” Thomas was so happy he wanted to giggle like an idiot. Notonly were they rescued, his friends were alive. They were alive! “Yesterday morning, we kind of spread out, spying here and there. Frypan was peeking around the corner into that alley up there just as those three shanks pulled a gun on you. He came back, we got mad, started planning our ambush. Most

of those shucks were wasted or asleep.” (Chapter 39:136).

Thomas and friends mutual affection on each other. The evidence that they loved each other, as author in chapter thirty five and thirty nine, the fact that Thomas could not stop to worry his friend when they are not shared, and also hate when he parted ways with his friend. As well as his friends who are seeking the whereabouts of Thomas. Minho is Thomas’ friend, when he know that Thomas got torture from Crank, he

is mad. He and other companions rescued Thomas from enemy’s attacks.

(34)

3.2.2 Same activities Between Thomas And His Companion

The second categories of the friendship based on explanition above is joint activities, common ground. Here are some evidences that support researcher argument related Thomas’ characterization.

Thomas looked at the Gladers around them, some running from window to window to get a look outside, others huddling in small groups. Everyone had a look of half disbelief, half terror.

“Where’s Newt?” “Right here.” Thomas turned to see the

older boy, not knowing how he’d missed him. “What’s goin’ on?” “You think I have a bloody clue? Bunch of crazies want to eat us for breakfast, by the looks of it. We need to find another room, have a Gathering. All this noise is driving nails through my buggin’ skull.” (Chapter 3 : 13).

He opened his eyes to see the Gladers gathered around the green-painted door that led to the common area where they’d eaten pizza the night before. Minho was jerking on the round brass handle to no avail. Locked. Newt was having a go at the door, with the same uselessresult. “It’s locked,” he muttered when he finally gave up, his arms falling weakly to his sides. “Really, genius?” Minho said, his powerful arms folded and tensed, veins bulging all over the place. Thomas thought for a split second he could actually see the blood pumping through

them. “No wonder you were named after Isaac Newton—such

an amazing ability to think.” (Chapter 3 : 14).

The evidence that Thomas and his companions do activities together, when Thomas and friends will discuss together about what they need to do, and when they tried to infiltrate into forbidden room together, they get difficulties something together and help each other. It is evidence that Thomas and his companions do activities together.

(35)

clue what had happened, how we’d gotten there, what we were supposed to do. And we were terrified, disoriented. But since we were all in the same crappy situation, we organized ourselves and figured out the place. Had the full farm running

within days, everybody with their own job.” (Chapter 9:35).

The next evidence that Thomas and his companions do activities together. Newt's statement that they do many things together, from sleeping together, enjoy the atmosphere of the place is not safe , together are having trouble, feel the fear, and together face the enemy. They also together do a journey toward The Safe Haven.

“Something like that,” Minho agreed. “You’re a

philosophizing wonder.” He nodded back toward the exit from

the stairway. “Come on. Let’s get those shanks out here and start walking. No time to waste letting the sun suck all the water out of us.” “Maybe we should wait until it goes down,”

Newt suggested. “And hang out with those shuck balls of

metal? No way.” Thomas agreed that they should get moving. “I think we’re okay. Looks like sunset’s only a few hours away. We can be tough for a while, take a break, then go as far as

possible during the night. I can’t stand another minute down

there.”

(Chapter 17:66).

The next evidence that Thomas and his companions do activities together. Newt's statement that they do many things together, from sleeping together, enjoy the atmosphere of the place is not safe , together are having trouble, feel the fear, and together face the enemy. They also together do a journey toward The Safe Haven. It is clearly evidence that Thomas and his companions do activities together.

(36)

Relationship between Thomas and his companions include the categories of the friendship.

3.2.3 Sociability Element Between Thomas And His Companion

Based on definition above that Sociability element friend is a source of entertainment, enjoyment, and recreation. Here the evidence that Thomas get enjoyment with his companions.

“He didn’t bother to finish, those two words alone sapping his strength.“Just eat it,” Minho said, followed by a wet crunch. Thomas glanced up to see his friend munching on his own apple. Then, drawing the last remnants of energy from somewhere deep inside himself, he pushed himself up onto an elbow and grabbed the fruit lying on the bed. He lifted it to his mouth and took a small bite. The burst of flavor and juice was a glorious thing. Moaning, he attacked the rest of it and had eaten down to its stumpy core before Minho had even finished his—despite the head start. “Slim yourself nice and calm,” Minho said. “Eat like that and you’ll just throw it right back up. Here’s another one—try slowing down this time.” He handed a second apple to Thomas, who took it without saying thank you and chomped a big bite. As he chewed, resolving to swallow before stuffing another chunk in his mouth, he realized he could actually feel the first traces of energy trickling through his body. “This is so good,” he mumbled. “This is so shuckin’ good.” “You still sound like an idiot when you use Glader words,” Minho responded before taking another (Chapter 9:37).

“You met our new friend?” Minho responded, a smirk flashing across his face. “Real piece of work, this guy. I gotta get me one of those shuck suits. Fancy stuff.” “Am I awake?” Thomas asked. “You’re awake. Now eat—you look horrible. Almost as

bad as Rat Man over there, reading his book.” (Chapter

10:39)

(37)

were joking, entertaining each other. Minho share meals with Thomas that hunger. Thomas sleeps with stomach of the famished , but Minho came with Apel to share it with Thomas. When Thomas looks meals it made him feel like he was looking on heaven itself . Minho success give comfort to Thomas that hunger. Minho also keeps teasing Thomas. It is evidence that Thomas get enjoyment with his companions.

“Just slim it and listen,” Newt said. “Maybe it’s all gonna be over.”“Yeah, right,” Minho said. “And Frypan’s gonna start having little babies, Winston’ll get rid of his monster acne, and Thomas here’ll actually smile for once.”Thomas turned to Minho and exaggerated a fake smile. “There, you happy?”“Dude,” he responded. “You are one ugly shank.”“If

Worry for Teresa, despite the changesbetween them. Worry for Brenda—standing stoically just a few people down the line from him—andregret over how they had barely spoken since being reunited. He imagined her having come all this wayonly to be killed by a vicious man-made creature. (Chapter 59:194 - 195).

If Thomas hadn’t been on the step below him, he would’ve tumbled down the rest of the way for sure by now. “On the count of three!” Thomas yelled. “Winston! On the count of three!” Still no sign he’d heard. Screaming. Thrashing. Kicking. Slapping at the silver. Tears welled up in Thomas’s eyes, or maybe it was sweat trickling down from his forehead. But it stung. And he felt like the air had heated up to a million degrees. His muscles tensed; lances of pain shot through his legs. They were cramping. ( Chapter 16:60).

His hair stood on end despite the ripping wind, the static inthe air raging and prickly as flying needles.Thomas wanted to scream, wanted to hear his own voice, even if it was only the dull vibrations insidehis skull. But he knew the dust-riddled air would choke him; it was hard enough to take short, quickbreaths through his nose. Especially with the storm of lightning crashing to the ground all around them, singeing the air, making everything smell like copper and ash. (Chapter 24:84).

Gladers were to the left and right, all heading in the same

direction. They seemed fewer in number, but Thomas still couldn’t

SYNOPSIS

The book starts with Thomas and the other teenagers known as "Gladers", who had escaped from an experiment known as The Maze in the previous book, sleeping in the dormitory they were brought to by a group of rescuers. Thomas is woken by a telepathic communication with Teresa, the only female Glader, who is afraid. As he wakes up, he finds that the facility is being attacked by Cranks, aggressive zombie-like people that have been affected by a plague known as "the Flare." He and the others escape into the facility's common area and discover that their rescuers are dead. They also find that Teresa is missing from her room, and in her place is a boy named Aris Jones. Aris explains that he escaped from a similar Maze experiment, dubbed "Group B," in which he was the only male. The boys discover tattoos on their necks assigning them specific roles.

The Gladers re-enter the common area and find the bodies of their rescuers have disappeared. They find someone, a scientist from WICKED, named Janson (described by the boys as "Rat Man"), who explains that WICKED has been studying them to try to find a cure for the Flare. He tells them they have been infected with the Flare and must in two weeks get through the Scorch, a burned out section of the land, to find a safe haven and get the cure.

building to find Teresa, who kisses him and tells him that he needs to stay away from her.

As the Gladers search for supplies, Thomas begins to remember the relationship he had with Teresa before their memories were removed. They find a city, but encounter a storm that kills several boys, including Winston and Jack. They take refuge in a building where they find a group of Cranks led by a man named Jorge. Thomas convinces Jorge and a teenage girl named Brenda, his second-in-command, to help the Gladers escape in exchange for some of the cure. Thomas and Brenda get separated from the rest of the group, and Thomas discovers a message written all over the city that says that he is the real leader. Thomas and Brenda are then suddenly captured by another group of Cranks who drug them, but before they pass out, Brenda tries to kiss Thomas. He refuses her advances because of his feelings for Teresa. Minho rescues them with the help of the other Gladers, but Thomas is shot in the shoulder with a rusty bullet that leads to an infection.

Thomas' infection gets worse, and WICKED captures him to heal his wounds. A healed Thomas is later returned to the Gladers, where he explains that WICKED never wanted him to get shot and that they considered him very important. Thomas later receives a telepathic message from Teresa warning him that something terrible is about to happen and that she won't be able to help him.

against her will. Later, Teresa comes to Thomas with Aris. Teresa and Aris kiss, and she explains that she has been manipulating Thomas all along. They lock Thomas in a room where he passes out. While passed out, he remembers some of his past relationship with Teresa and Aris before he entered the Maze. Eventually, Thomas is rescued by Aris and Teresa, who explain that they were forced by WICKED to make Thomas feel totally betrayed, and that if they hadn't complied, WICKED would've killed Thomas. Thomas is conflicted, but no longer trusts them.

BIOGRAPHY

James Smith Dashner was born in Austell, Georgia on November 26, 1972. He attended Brigham Young University where he studied accounting but decided to try his hand at writing, having been an avid reader since childhood. After several attempts, Dashner eventually created the character of Jimmy Fincher. Dashner would expand his story into an outline and eventually produced four books in a series, collectively known as The Jimmy Fincher Saga. After repeated rejections from publishers, Dashner's manuscript was well received by Cedar Fort and his writing career began to take form.

After completion of the four books in the Fincher series, Dashner began another planned trilogy: The Maze Runner. Like the previous saga, this series would again focus on a young boy in a perilous situation. Reviews of The Maze Runner were positive with many comparing the series to the wildly popular The

Hunger Games series. Dashner has also completed a prequel to the series, The Kill

Order. Dashner has stated that this series is heavily influenced by William
