Examine the Relationship between Internet Addiction with Academic Achievement and Mental Health of High School Students in Bandar Abbas

Abstract: The aim of this study is examine the relationship between internet addiction with Academic achievement and mental health of high School students in Bandar Abbas. This research is descriptive and correlational. The statistical population includes all students in high school of one district of Bandar Abbas in 2015-2016. A statistical sample consisted of 356 persons that select with simple random sampling. Research tools include inventory of academic achievement and Kimberly Young's Internet Addiction and Mental Health Goldberg. Result showed that there is a significant relationship between internet addiction with Academic Achievement (P= 0.01) and there is a significant relationship between internet addiction with mental health (P= 0.01). It can be concluded that mental health and academic achievement can be affected by addiction to the Internet and to prevent mental health problems and academic failure, students must be attention to damage emerging, such as addiction to the Internet.
Introduction
Mental health is science and art that helps people to create accurate methods of psychological and emotional that helps its environment more favorable for solving the problems and solutions of their choice (Salahshoor, 2003). Nowadays, internet addiction has been reported as a psychological disorder in medical science and psychology. This disorder is a new form of addiction in recent years, that it has attracted the researchers in the field of psychology, psychiatry, sociology. Internet addiction is a problem that in different societies and cultures. The prevalence of this problem has led to the identification of the causes, consequences and complications investigated by researchers and practitioners (Atkinson, Rita and Atkinson, Richard, Hilgard, Ernest 2001). Goldberg was the first can be used so-called Internet addiction disorder, to introduce and identify characteristics of people who use the Internet to show problems. He was the first who formed a group to support Internet addicts (Byabangard, 2000). Internet addiction is a global phenomenon with different prevalence levels and range from 5 to 25 percent of students in America, China, Korea, UK, Australia, Taiwan, Japan, Eastern Europe and Western countries (Attaran, 2004). About the gender, some studies have shown that women are twice less than men his Internet addiction (Alipur, 2002).Amichai Humber and Ben showed that students who are excessively dependent on the Internet, feel lonely in terms of mental health (Byabangard, 2000).
Hassan Zadeh and colleague’s study2012 showed there is a significant negative correlation between Internet addiction and academic achievement. There are significant differences in terms of Internet use between Male and female students and Internet use was higher in boys than girls. Also, there is a significant and positive correlation between internet addiction with neuroticism and agreeableness subscales and there is significant and negative correlation between internet addiction with conscientiousness and extraversion. There was no significant relationship between internet addiction and openness in scale.

Explanations on the questions and how to respond to the questionnaire distributed when they were presented to the participants. Kimberly Young by Young's Internet Addiction Test (1999) was developed to assess of Internet addiction. By Aurang (2004) was translated into Persian and used. The test has 20 questions. And aims are to assess the level of Internet addiction in different people and Likert Method for responsiveness and five degrees. This is a standard questionnaire and its validity and reliability previous studies have been reported using Cronbach's alpha 0.90. General Health Questionnaire is based on self-report Method. The aim is detected those who have a mental disorder (Goldberg, 1978). General Health Questionnaire has 28 parts and 32% of the variance of the general health. The reliability of the questionnaire by using Cronbach's alpha coefficient was calculated 0.86.
Results
Descriptive statistics of the variables are presented in Table 1.

First hypothesis: there is a significant relationship between internet addiction and academic achievement in high schools students of Bandar Abbas.

According to the R2 in the above table it can be concluded that Internet addiction in about 3% of the variance in Academic Achievement explains the proposed model. Second hypothesis: there is a significant relationship between internet addiction and mental health in high schools students of Bandar Abbas.

The results of the regression analysis in the above table shows that the regression of mental health on Internet addiction is statistically significant and these variables explain part of the variance of academic achievement.

According to the R2 in the above table it can be concluded that Internet addiction in about 14% of the variance in mental health explains the proposed model.
Discussion
consistent with the results Mirzaiean and colleagues (2012). The researchers showed that internet addiction can threaten mental health. It is essential in the proper use of the Internet, advantages and disadvantages of the virtual world of the Internet, culture and education in the family and community. Generally the results of this study it can be concluded that mental health and academic achievement can be affected by addiction to the Internet and to prevent mental health problems and academic failure, students must be attention to damage emerging, such as addiction to the Internet.
