ABSTRACT
The Virgin and the Gipsy is a literary works by D. H Lawrence which tells about a 19 years old young girl named Yvette. Yvette lives in the family where her grandmother called Granny becomes the pivot of the house and has control and power to reign every people in the house. Every family member is obedient to Granny except Yvette. She always disagrees and rebels of what Granny says. Granny always manages activity in the house so that Yvette feels like a prisoner spied by Granny. Because of Granny treatment, Yvette has experienced basic anxiety.
The writer chooses The Virgin and the Gipsy novel because the writer wants to know more about the basic anxieties experienced by Yvette, their effects on her psychological behavior and her effort to overcome those effects.
The writer used psychological approach to analyze the thesis. This approach is used to explain and to relate the story in the novel with the theory.
ABSTRAK
The Virgin and the Gipsy adalah sebuah karya sastra karangan D. H Lawrence yang menceritakan tentang seorang gadis bernama Yvette berumur 19 tahun. Yvette hidup di dalam keluarga Saywell dimana neneknya yang disebut Granny menjadi poros di rumah dan mempunyai kendali dan kekuatan untuk memerintah setiap orang di dalam rumah. Setiap anggota keluarga patuh dengan Granny kecuali Yvette. Yvette selalu memberontak dengan apa yang dikatakan Granny. Granny selalu mengatur aktivitas setiap orang jadi Yvette merasa seperti tahanan yang dimatai oleh Granny. Karena perlakuan Granny, Yvette mengalami kecemasan dasar.
Penulis memilih novel the Virgin and the Gipsy karena penulis ingin mengetahui lebih tentang kecemasan dasar yang dialami oleh Yvette, akibat dari tingkah laku psikologinya dan usaha Yvette untuk mengatasi pengaruh-pengaruh tersebut.
Penulis menggunakan pendekatan psikologi untuk menganalisa thesis ini. Pendekatan ini digunakan untuk menjelaskan dan menghubungkan cerita di dalam novel dengan teori.
