Blessings Carnival Committee
Dear Brothers and Sisters.
There are not enough words to describe how thankful I am for the Solemn celebrations of Christmas. This has been a lot of work for many, yet I am reminded of the old saying "many hands make light work". We were able to connect with many who were not able to be with us in the church through live ± streaming of our celebrations ± Thank you to all who donated for this particular project! My dear friends in Christ let us always remember that by serving faithfully our congregation here at St. Francis whatever may be the means, the method is ministering to the fullness of Christ. Thank you for supporting our parish and our Catholic school!
Wishing you to prosper in holiness as we follow God's voice in the New 2021 Year let me conclude with the passage from the letter to the Philippians:“So if there is any encourage- ment in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.”
My heartfelt thanks for the many good wishes, cards, and gifts I have received from you this Christmas. May God bless you!
Fr. Jerzy

THE ANGELUS
Among our many Catholic devotions, few are more beautiful or have been contemplated more than the Angelus.
Designed to commemorate the mystery of the Incarnation and pay homage to Mary’s role in salvation history, it has long been part of Catholic life. Around the world, three times every day, the faithful stop whatever they are doing and with the words, “ The angel of the lord declared unto Mary “ begin this simple but beautiful prayer. But why do we say the Angelus at all, much less three times a day.
A review of Church history shows that this devotion did not appear suddenly but developed over several centuries.
Most Church historians agree that the Angelus can be traced back to the 11th century Italy, where monks said three Hail Mary’s during night prayer. Over time, pastors encouraged their Catholic flocks to end each day in similar fashion. In the villages as in the monasteries a bell was rung to remind them of this prayer time. This devotional soon spread to other parts of Christendom, including England.
At the end of the 11th century, the Normans invaded and occupied England. In order to control the populace, the Nor- mans rang a curfew bell at the end of each day reminding them to retire to their homes. While not intended to encourage prayer, this bell became associated with night prayer including the Hail Mary. After the curfew ended, a bell continued to be rung at the close of the day but now the curfew bell became known as the “Ave” or “ Gabriel “ bell.
It was asked of the diocese to kneel and pray at nightfall, the angelic salutation wherever they might be. This happened around 1323.
About five years previous, Catholics all over Italy were starting this devotion only in the morning instead of at nightfall.
The noontime Angelus seems to have derived from a longstanding practice of praying and meditating on Our Lord’s passion at midday each Friday. In 1456, Pope Calixtus III, directed the ringing of church bells at noon and that Catholics pray three Hail Mary’s, asking that the intentions of these prayers would be for peace in the face of a Turkish invasion.
Pope Sixtus IV was asked by Queen Elizabeth to grant an indulgence to all who prayed a Hail Mary at 6a.m., noon, and 6 p.m. A bell was rung at these times as well.
By the end of the 16th century, the Angelus had become the prayer we recognize today, three Hail Mary’s, with short verses in between (called versicles) ending with a prayer. This devotion reminds us of the Angel Gabriel’s annunciation to Mary, Mary’s Fiat, the Incarnation, and Our Lord’s passion and resurrection. Over the years many of the faithful have focused the morning Angelus on the resurrection, the noon on the Passion and the evening on the Incarnation.
Like a heavenly messenger, the Angelus calls man to interrupt his daily earthly routines and turn to thoughts of God, the Blessed Mother and eternity. Pope Benedict XVI sums it up beautifully “ The angel’s proclamation was addressed to her;
she accepted it, and when she responded from the depths of her heart . . . at that moment the eternal Word began to exist as a human being in time. From generation to generation the wonder evoked by this ineffable mystery never ceases.
We at St. Francis will be praying this beautiful devotional every Sunday at the conclusion of 10: 30 mass. It can be found in the back of the missalette.
