Numbers, Dates, and Time

In this lesson, you will learn the days of the week, the months of the year, and the numbers from 1 to 100. You will also learn to respond to questions asking about the day of the week, the date, the time of day, and the age of a person.

Days of the Week

Like the Roman calendar, the Indonesian calendar begins the week with Sunday (hari Minggu). Hari is the word for “day,” and Minggu is the word for Sunday (minggu without hari and written in lower case means “week”). As you read the terms below, listen to how they are pronounced on the audio tape. Practice your pronunciation by repeating each term after the speaker.

Notice the structure of the numbers 11 through 19. Pause the audio and study the pattern for 21 through 24.

11 sebelas 21 dua puluh satu 12 dua belas 22 dua puluh dua 13 tiga belas 23 dua puluh tiga 14 empat belas 24 dua puluh empat 15 lima belas 16 enam belas 17. tujuh belas 18 delapan belas 19 sembilan belas 20 dua puluh Grammar Notes

The prefix se is used for “one” instead of satu when saying the numbers 10, 11, 100, 1000, and so on. Thus, you say sepuluh for 10 rather than satupuluh, and sebelas for 11. Add the word belas to express the numbers that are in the teens.

Numbers in the tens, such as 10, 20, and 30, use the suffix puluh.

Numbers in the hundreds use the suffix ratus, and those in the thousands use ribu. In English, the word “and” is used when saying numbers over one hundred, such as two hundred and fifteen, but it is never the case inIndonesian. Thus, one says dua ratus limabelas and not dua ratus dan limabelas

Ordinal Numbers

Adding ke to the front of a cardinal number forms the ordinal number. 1 satu 1st kesatu pertama (another word for “first”) 2 dua 2nd kedua 3 tiga 3rd ketiga 4 empat 4th keempat 5 lima 5th kelima 6 enam 6th keenam 7 tujuh 7th ketujuh 8 delapan 8th kedelapan 9 sembilan 9th kesembilan 10 sepuluh 10th kesepuluh. Cultural Notes

In Indonesia, we have the expression “Jam karet,” which means “time is rubber” or that time is flexible. You will notice that Indonesians tend to have a casual attitude toward time. If, for example, you are an hour late for an appointment, you need not be too concerned. Likewise, it is not unusual if you are made to wait for your appointment. If things do not get done today, well, there is always tomorrow or the next day. The excuse people use to justify their tardiness is “Jam karet.”

However, airlines, trains, and ships run on time. Futhermore, people tend to be on time for weddings, funerals, government events, and religious ceremonies.

Grammar Notes

Berapa is used to form questions involving numbers, such as in questions that ask “how much” or “how many.”

Jam berapa means “what time is it,” and berapa jam means “how many hours.” Be sure to put the words in the right order. Apa is generally used to turn statements into questions. For example, “Hhari apa?” means “What day is it?”

Note: Do not use jam apa when asking, “What time is it?” Instead, use jam berapa. Adalah is the “to be” verb (is, are, was, and were). Note that its use is optional.

Hari ini adalah hari apa? What day is today? Hari ini (adalah) hari Senin. Today is Monday. Bukan is used to negate nouns and pronouns.

Hari ini bukan hari Senin. Today is not Monday. Tidak is used to negate verbs and adjectives.

Time

A.) When time is on the hour, you use either the word jam (hour) or pukul followed with the number that represents the hour.

2 o’clock Jam 2 (pukul 2) 4 o’clock Jam 4 (pukul 4)

Remember that you have to put the words in the right order. You say the hour (jam) and then the number:

jam 12 (12 o’clock), not 12 jam (12 hours)

It is important when you are telling the time or asking the time to begin with jam or pukul and then follow it with berapa. To indicate what time events occur, use the word pada followed by the time. Saya ke sekolah pada jam 7:oo pagi I go to school at 7 a.m.

McDonalds buka pada jam 9:oo pagi. McDonalds opens at 9 a.m. To ask what time it is, use the word berapa.

Jam berapa ini? What time is it? Berapa jam? How many hours?

Menit is the Indonesian word for minutes, and detik is the word for seconds.

B.) When the time is on the half hour, you say it is halfway to the next hour and use the word setengah. 6:30 Jam (pukul) setengah tujuh.

1:30 Jam (pukul) setengah dua.

C.) When the time is between one minute and twenty-nine minutes past the hour, you use the word lewat. Note that you must say Jam (hour) first, then lewat, and then the number of minutes that have passed.

7:20 Jam (pukul) tujuh lewat dua puluh (menit)

10:15 Jam (pukul) sepuluh lewat lima belas or Jam sepuluh lewat seperempat (a quarter past 10) D.) When the time is between twenty-nine minutes and one minute to the hour, you use the word kurang (less or minus). You say the number of the next hour, the word kurang, and then the number of minutes until that hour.

8:40 Jam (pukul) sembilan kurang dua puluh.

(9)

E.) When the time is on the hour, that is, the minute hand is on the 12, you say the word Jam followed by the number of the hour.

3:00 Jam (pukul) tiga tepat (it’s 3 o’clock sharp) 12:00 Jam (pukul) dua belas tepat.
