Keputusan untuk Menentukan
Stuktur Recycle
1. Berapa banyak sistem reaktor yang diperlukan? Apakah terdapat pemisahan diantara sistem reaktor tsb?
2. Berapa banyak aliran recycle yang diperlukan?
Contoh1. Proses HDA
Toluen + H2 Benzen + CH4 1150-1300oF
2 Benzen Difenil + H2 500 psia

Jumlah Aliran Recycle
• Untuk menentukan jumlah aliran kita dapat mendaftar
komponen yg keluar reaktor berdasarkan titik didih normalnya.
• Selanjutnya kita mengelompokkan komponen recycle yang
memiliki titik didih yg berdekatan jika dalam reaktor yg sama.
• Selanjutnya jumlah aliran recycle didasarkan jumlah kelompok.
memerlukan kompressor, yg selalu mahal.
Aliran gas dan cair dibedakan, karena aliran recycle gas memerlukan kompressor, yg selalu mahal.
• Dianggap aliran recycle gas jika komponen tsb mendidih pada
temperatur dibawah -48oC.
• Aliran recycle cairan hanya memerlukan pompa.

Reaktan Berlebih
Dalam beberapa kasus kegunaan reaktan berlebih:
• Dapat mendorong distribusi produk/selektivitas (1)
• Mendorong komponen lain mendekati konversi total (2)
• Mendorong konversi kesetimbangan (3) Sebagai contoh,
1. produksi isooktana dengan alkilasi butana (isobutan berlebih) (1) Butana + isobutana isooktan
1. produksi isooktana dengan alkilasi butana (isobutan berlebih) (1) Butana + isobutana isooktan

2. Produksi posgen (CO berlebih) (2) CO + Cl2 COCl2
3. Produksi sikloheksan (H2 berlebih) (3) Benzen + 3H2 sikloheksan

Neraca Massa Recycle
Reaktan Pembatas
Pertamakali kita membuat neraca massa reaktan pembatas.

Reaktan Lainnya
Setelah kita menghitung laju alir reaktan pembatas, kita menggunkan rasio molar pada masukan reaktor u menghitung laju alir recycle komponen lain.

Design Heuristic

Keq = [Difenil][H2]/[benzen]2
Beban Panas reaktor = panas reaksi x laju umpan segar

Perubahan temperatur adiabatis
QR = F Cp (TR,in – TR,out)
18
• Heuristics
Since the availability of the hear transfer area is limited. The heat load is limited to 6-8 million Btu/hr.

• We can moderate the temperature change by increasing recycle flow rate. . 8000 to 6000 of range in the is exchanger heat head -floating a of 2 ft
Heuristic

• Reactor concentration and temperature
The objectives to design the reactor concentration and temperature profiles are:
O1. to improve selectivity (minimize the generation of byproducts) O2. to increase economic potential (minimize reactor cost)
O3. to facilitate downstream separation (decrease separation cost) O4. to possess operability (handle production rate changes)
O4. to possess operability (handle production rate changes)
Remark: Certainly, there are cases which are important to ensure
• Reactor concentration - single reaction : Reaction Single R Ak - use PFR (O2) : Reaction Single R B A k 30 R B A
- A/B=50/50 is most economic but with little operability - if R is HK, make LK excess (Cheng and Yu)
- if B is HK and R is IK, make B excess (Cheng and Yu)
- degree of excess depends on the relative reactor/separator costs (Cheng and Yu, AIChE J, 2003, 49, 682.)
Remark: Note that: Totalreaction rate: k(T)CACBVR
• Reactor concentration - parallel reactions
For the followings reactions orders of reactions become important.

• Reactor pressure- vapor phase reaction Irreversible single reactions:
- high pressure increases vapor density and thus gives higher reaction rate (smaller reactor volume if given conversion)
Reversible single reactions:

- an increase in the pressure shifts the reaction toward compensating - an increase in the pressure shifts the reaction toward compensating
the pressure increase (RHS) and thus increases the equilibrium conversion (Le Chatelier’s principle).
A ↔ 2B
- an increase in the pressure shifts the reaction toward compensating the pressure increase (LHS) and thus decreases the equilibrium
