STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS TOWARD THE USE OF BAHASA INDONESIA IN
TEACHING ENGLISH Heriyanto Irawan Abstract
English has become one of the major subjects in all schools nowadays and many teaching methods were developed to help teaching English. In opposition of the direct method which has been adopted in educational institutions in Indonesia, to help the students have a better understanding when learning English, another method is used which is by using first language (L1) to help the students. In this study, I will aim to discover how students actually perceive L1 in their English learning. I wanted to find out how the students would actually perceive L1 in their English learning. The data is collected from the questionnaires that were given to the XII year students which will be analyzed later using SPSS software. One of the findings shows that the students actually perceive L1 as a tool to help them study English better, especially when they would have to ask their teachers something they do not understand. However, the result also shows that if L1 is used too much, the students would then perceive it as an obstacle to their learning.
