Thesis: An Analysis of Icons in Invictus and Only the Strong and their Meanings
Abstract:
As a product of popular culture, a film is constituted of icons and meaning. These two elements represent the values of the people depicted in the movies and are derived from the people‟s cultural mindset. Being interested in the similarities between Invictus and Only the Strong, the writer used this study to analyze the icons in both movies and their meaning from cultural studies perspective. The analysis revealed rugby as the icon in Invictus and capoeira in Only the Strong. Both rugby and capoeira are icons because of their appearance and historical development. The discussion also found out that rugby is derived from collaboration, equality and support; whereas embedded in capoeira are freedom, success through collaboration and fairness.
