AFTER DARK BY JAMES LECK PDF

Fifteen-year-old Charlie Harker is pretty disappointed to learn he'll be spending his summer vacation helping his mom renovate an old family inn in the ?hick town? of Rolling Hills. He much preferred his plan of lounging on a beach in Hawaii. And now he has to deal with his annoying neighbor Miles Van Helsing, who's been trying to convince him there's paranormal activity going on in town. Charlie knows this can't be true. Miles is just nuts, right? Although he has to admit, it is getting harder and harder to explain all the odd situations he keeps finding himself in, particularly once the sun goes down. And it does seem like an awful lot of people are getting sick ...

Author James Leck hits all the right notes in this young-adult novel: adventure, suspense, funny dialogue and, best of all, zombie-vampires! This fast-moving page-turner will be a favorite read for pre-teens. Leck has created an appealing character in Charlie: the lovable slacker and consummate prankster at Choke Academy boarding school who's always quick with a clever or sarcastic comment. But Charlie proves in the end that he can step up to a challenge and show leadership and courage when he needs to. With characteristics of several different genres, this book makes a great choice for a language arts discussion of literary genres. Despite the zombie-vampires, Leck deftly avoids the carnage, so the story never reaches the level of horror.

hours) and has spent most of his life living luxuriously off of his mother’s family money and the revenue from his famous father’s books.

But that all changes when his mother reveals that the money is all gone --- all they have left is a small family-owned inn in a nearby resort town that was passed down to them. Therefore, instead of hanging out by the pool, Charlie must spend his summer fixing up the old building. But even this is soon interrupted when a strange, mysterious virus begins to spread in the town. At first it seems all cooked up in the imagination of Miles Van Helsing, Charlie’s newest friend and the resident conspiracy theorist. But when people begin to be consumed by mind-numbing bloodlust and violence, attacking anyone caught roaming around after dark, it’s up to Charlie and Miles to figure out what’s going on and put a stop to the growing madness.

The best part of AFTER DARK was the pace and sense of urgency --- the author did a great job of implanting a strong undercurrent of tension. Unfortunately, some of the other elements didn’t impress me as much. I felt like it straggled the line between a goofy kids book and a serious, more mature thriller, and it didn’t quite achieve the balance.

It also took more than 100 pages for the main plot to start picking up. I completely understand the setup of character and circumstance, but when a book is only 253 pages, I don’t think it should have taken so long. Sections, descriptions and conversations could have been cut and AFTER DARK would not have decreased in any way.

However, once the main plot began rolling along, I became much more invested. I enjoyed coasting along the twists and turns and I liked the cliffhanger ending, especially because it mainly involved one of the characters I cared about most.

Regarding character, I found the spoiled and privileged Charlie difficult to like. And sure, he changed some by the end, but by that time, it was too late for me. I definitely cared about other characters though, specifically Miles and the female characters. Despite sometimes wandering into stereotype territory, Miles was endearing, interesting, believable, relatable and fleshed out. I also really enjoyed Charlie’s mom, Claire. Her story was hidden behind everything else, but she was a woman who, despite experiencing a significant downfall, was determined to take care of herself and her family. She was an admirable character, and I was rooting for her to survive throughout the story.

While I think that, like me, older kids would be frustrated with the childish elements and slow beginning of AFTER DARK, I feel that younger kids might like it; they’d enjoy the sillier moments and enjoy the challenge of the darker, complex ones. Even though AFTER DARK wasn’t for me, I think there are definitely others that will enjoy this oddball of a book.

*Actual rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.*

Wry and engaging, After Dark pokes fun at tropes of the genre with irreverent tone and a smart-alecky protagonist.

Tenth-grader Charlie Harker is so ready for summer, a "time for sleeping and swimming and watching three really bad horror movies back to back to back." But Ma has a better idea: move to the old hick town of Rolling Hills and renovate the family's decrepit inn. And right on Charlie's first night, he meets Miles Van Helsing, the town's resident conspiracy nut. As the two spend more time together, Charlie begins to suspect that Rolling Hills, after all, might not be too boring. Nor safe. Leck's latest novel finds its strength in its MC. Nothing gets me to stick to a book better than an interesting character and Charlie is exactly that and some. He's hilarious and endearing and curious but also afraid and lazy. He's a person. The author triumphantly mixes sarcasm with sincere dopiness.

After Dark also benefits from its self-awareness. It owns its ridiculousness, and that's the most amusing part next to the narrative voice. Almost every investigation Charlie and Miles undertake—ironically yet effectively juxtaposed with commentaries from the former—often ends up being an episode of the horror movie Charlie mocks. It would be tacky except our hero is very tongue-in-cheek. Plus, there are several winks at gothic cult (Miles's last name is Van Helsing, there's a character called Igor) as well as family drama. The family drama, however, is decent at best, paltry at worst.

Moreover, the book is effortlessly atmospheric. Rolling Hills's sleepy-town-ness is palpable, the kind that teleports you back to your childhood days watching Goosebumps. The kind that exudes old school horror movie vibe. Albeit, more eerie and less scary. And the monster of the story, the "zompire," is a nice twist on two of today's most celebrated undead. In fact, I can see After Dark being a massive hit with a younger audience. Because I feel like the resolution was a bit flimsy, at least for my taste. And with a denouement that both surprises and does not surprise, a sequel is not unlikely but unnecessary.

Light and thoroughly enjoyable, be sure to include "read After Dark" in your to-do list.
