Putra, Robertus. S.K. 2017. An Analysis on the Translation of Idiomatic Expressions in the Subtitles of My Sister’s Keeper. Yogyakarta: English Language Education Study Program, Sanata Dharma University.
Translation is the process of transferring a meaning from a source language into the target language. In idiomatic expressions translation, the translator cannot translate the idiomatic expressions literally into the target language. The idiomatic expressions translation can be found in the movie subtitle. This research was conducted to find out how the idiomatic expressions are translated in the movie, My Sister’s Keeper based on Larson’s theory of
translation.
To answer the research problem, the researcher conducted a qualitative research by using document analysis. The data for this research were taken from the English transcript and the Indonesian subtitle of My Sister's Keeper movie. The data of idiomatic expression translation that had been listed from the data were analysed using Larson's (1984) theory of good translation.
The researcher found 131 idiomatic expressions in the subtitle. There were 44.3% categorized as ideal-Acceptable, 12.2% as Acceptable, 9.9% as Unacceptable, and the last 33.6% as failed translation. Based on the result, only 57% of the idiomatic translation, that was acceptable. The other 43% was not acceptable. In other words, the translation of the idiomatic expressions in the subtitles is relatively unacceptable. Based on the finding, the researcher recommends that the translators deepen and sharpen the translator' knowledge of idiomatic expressions in the source language and target language, since there were a lot of errors in the idiomatic translation.

Peneliti menemukan 131 ekspresi kiasan didalam subtitle.

1 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter discusses the introduction of the study. It consists of three
parts. They are the research background, research problem, and research method.
In the research background, the researcher establishes the reasons for choosing the
topic, and a short introduction to idiomatic expression, translation, and the movie,
My Sister’s Keeper. The research problem section establishes questions that will
help the researcher guide this study. The last part is the research method. It
consists of the method that the researcher will use to conduct and complete this
study.
A. Background
Language is a means of communication. It becomes an important part of
communication. In the movie, language becomes an important part to send the
message of the story. Some movies are not produced in the target language, thus
subtitles become important. It helps the audience to understand the language in a
movie. Subtitling is one type of screen translation. It is a text that is usually found
in the bottom of the screen. The subtitle is translated from a source language to
the target language. Newmark (1984) explains that translation is the process of
transferring a meaning from a source language into the target language. Catford
process of substituting a text in one language for a text in another” (p.1). In
conclusion, translation is the way of transferring the meaning of a source language
into the target language.
Larson (1984) says there are two different types of translation, which are
literal translation and idiomatic translation. Literal translation is a form-based
translation that attempts to follow the form of the source language. Idiomatic
translation is a meaning-based translation that makes every effort to transfer the
meaning of the source language text in the natural form of the target language.
Duff (1981) adds that the idiomatic expressions involve the use of the figurative
words of the language. As a result, the meaning cannot be translated directly.
Chaer (1986) also adds that idiomatic expression is an expression which carries a
metaphorical sense and its meaning is difficult to be predicted either lexically or
grammatically.
An idiom is one language feature that has added uniqueness and carries a
meaning different from the words in a grammatical construction. In movie
subtitling, the researcher often finds failed translation in some movies which
makes the meaning seem unnatural. It makes the audience difficult to grasp the
messages of the movie. For example, in Bahasa Indonesia, the word meja hijau
cannot be translated as the table that has a colour that is green (green table), but it
means as a legal court.
The researcher often finds movies which contains idiomatic expressions in
Cassavetes is one example. Cameron Diaz acts as the main character. There are
also Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vassilieva, and Alec Baldwin as the supporting
characters. This movie is taken from Jodi Picoult's novel of the same title. My
Sister's Keeper was released in the United States on June 26, 2009. The characters
use some idiomatic expressions in their conversation. Therefore, it is possibly
mistralated by the translator.
The purpose of this research is to find out how the idiomatic expressions
in My Sister’s Keeper were translated as seen in the subtitles, whether it is
acceptable or not based on the Larson’s (1984) theory. The researcher picks this
movie because this movie contains many idiomatic expressions in the dialog. The
researcher downloads the subtitle from the internet. The internet offers many
versions of Indonesian subtitle of My Sister’s Keeper, and the researcher needed
to find the best subtitles for the purpose of this study. It is expected that this study
can be beneficial especially for English Language Education Study Program
students to understand idiomatic expression in translation, especially in movie
subtitles and to use in daily conversation in English. It is also can be used as a
material for teaching and learning in many courses in the study program (such as
translation, interpreting, listening, and reading).
B. Research Problem
The research problem for this paper is:
How are the idiomatic expressions in My Sister`s Keeper translated based on
C. Methodology
The researcher employed documents analysis as the method of this study.
Document analysis is a qualitative research method. It is used when someone
wants to analyse physical documents in the written or visual form in order to
identify the specific data (Ary et al., 2010). Payne and Payne (2004) also describe
document analysis as a technique used to categorize, investigate, interpret and
identify the limitations of physical sources, most commonly written documents in
the private or public domain.
The documents in this study are English and Indonesian subtitles in the
movie, My Sister’s Keeper (2009). The researcher followed specific steps in the
document analysis part of this study. There are 3 steps according to Creswell
(2007):
1. Preparing and Organizing
Table 1.1 Example of Observation Table
ENGLISH SUBTITLE INDONESIAN SUBTITLE
researcher downloaded the English and Indonesian subtitle on:
that provided free and reliable subtitles. Furthermore, the researcher made an
observation table as shown in table 1.1.
2. Coding
Coding means the process of assigning a code to something for
classification or identification. In this step, the researcher watched the movie.
After that, researcher started to list the idiomatic expressions from the movie. In
order to support the findings and results, the researcher watched the movie more
than once. The researcher watched the movie with Indonesian subtitles and also
with English subtitles. The researcher listed all of the idiomatic expressions from
the movie. After classifying the idiomatic expression in English subtitles and
Indonesian subtitles, the researcher made sure all of the idiomatic expressions
from the movie had been listed.
3. Representing the Data
Representing the data means that the researcher analysed the obtained data
from the subtitle. In this research, the researcher employed the criteria proposed
by Larson (1984). Larson explains that there are three criteria to analysing the
data, namely Accurate (A), Clear (C), and Natural (N). The data are acceptable, if
they have these three criteria.
Moreover, the acceptability would be categorized into four more
categorizations. They are Ideal-acceptable translation (I-Acc), Acceptable
translation (Acc), Unacceptable translation (Unnac), and Failed translation (F). A
translation was classified as an ideal acceptable (I-Acc) if it had all the three
classified as an acceptable (Acc) translation if it had only two out of three criteria.
Then a translation was classified as an unacceptable (Unacc) translation if it only
passed one of the three criteria. Furthermore, a translation was failed (F) if it did
7 CHAPTER II DISCUSSION
This chapter consists of two parts. The first part is the review of related
literature which explains the theories used in this research. The second part is the
interpretation of the findings which explains the result of this research.
A. Review of Related Literature
This section, presents related theories for further discussion on the
problem. The theories are about idiomatic expression and translation.
1. Idiomatic Expression
Idiomatic expression is an expression whose meanings cannot be inferred
from the meanings of the words that make it up. Cooper (1999:233) on the
explanation defines that idiom is an expression whose meaning cannot always be
readily derived from the usual meaning of its constituent elements. It is a type of
informal English that has different meaning from the meaning of the words in the
expression. According to Poole (1999), idiomatic expression is an expression
which has a different meaning with the words’ individual meaning. The term
“idiomatic” refers to “expressions which have different meaning from the literal
meaning of the words that making up the respective expressions” (Lombardo,
Haaman, & Morley, 1999). In conclusion, the lines of the words in idiomatic
`Idiomatic expression can be seen from their characteristic. In daily life,
the words’ positions in idiomatic expressions are odd, illogical, and even
grammatically incorrect (Seidl & McMordie, 1980). For example is the phrase,
‘hold your tongue’. This idiomatic expression does not actually mean that people
should stick their fingers in their mouth or grab a hold of their tongue. However, it
means that they should not talk. Another example in Bahasa Indonesia, the words
‘meja hijau’ does not mean a table with green color, but the meaning is a legal
court. Usually, idiomatic expressions are understood and used by the native
speakers of the language like the previous examples (O’Brien, 2017). People
cannot translate idiomatic expression word by word because it will have different
meanings.
2. Translation
Generally, translation is a process of transferring the meaning of a source
language into the target language. Translation process involves the source
language and the target language. According to Larson (1984:12), the purpose of
translation is to transfer the meaning of a source language text into a target
language text. He (1984:3) also explain three factors that influence the translation.
There are grammatical structure, communication situation, and cultural context. In
other words, the translator has to pay attention to grammatical structure, the
situation in the movie, and the cultural context. Newmark (1988: 5) says that
translation is the process of transferring the meaning from source language to the
target language. In translation, the meaning of the source language has priority
their book The Theory and Practice of Translation. Translation consists in
reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source
language message, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style.
Larson (1984) says that there are two different types of translation, which
are a literal translation and idiomatic translation. Literal translation is form-based
translation which attempts to follow the form of the source language. This
translation is adapting the source language grammatical construction into the
target language. It is in agreement on what Newmark (1988) says that literal
translation is converting the source language grammatical construction to the
nearest equivalent in the target language. People can translate directly into the
target language form using the grammatical or original form of source language.
Example: SL: Where are you from? TL: Kamu berasal dari mana?
Meanwhile, idiomatic translation is meaning-based translation which makes every
effort to transfer the meaning of the source language text in the natural form of the
target language (Larson, 1984). It is different from literal translation. It sounds
like it is written originally in the receptor language. Idiomatic translation
reproduces the original message from the source language into the target language
(Newmark, 1988).
Example: SL : There is no use for crying over the spilled milk. TL : Nasi sudah menjadi bubur.
In this research, the researcher focuses on idiomatic translation, since it
cannot be translated directly into the target language. Often times, translators
since they are not the native speakers, who understand about idioms. Therefore,
they have to look into the exact meaning of the source language. In this case, the
researcher wants to know the idiomatic translation inMy Sister’s Keeper movie.
3. Process of Idiomatic Translation
Larson (1984) explains that there are some steps in the process of translation
that have to be attended. The process of translating could be shown by a diagram
that is taken fromLarson’sMeaning-Based Translation in Figure 2.1.
SOURCE LANGUAGE RECEPTOR LANGUAGE
The text to betranslated Translation
Discover the meaning Re–express the meaning
Meaning
Figure 2.1 Larson’s Translation Process (1984, p.4)
The first step that must be done in translating is to discover and
understand the meaning or the message of the source language text. After
discovering the meaning of the source language text, the translator then analyses
and looks for natural form of the receptor/target language. The following part will
give an example of the process of translating according to the diagram process by
Larson:
The meaning of the source text in the example above could be grasped
that “someone who needs to take a rest”. It will be very different if the
translator probably translates it without paying attention to the meaning or
message of the source text and just translate it literally, so that the
translation will sound unnatural in the target language, for instance:
“Kurasa dia butuh bernafas sejenak”that is not commonly used in Indonesian
as the target language. Therefore, once again, it is emphasized here that in the
process of translating, meaning must have priority over the form.
4. Criteria of Good Translation
Larson (1984) proposes three criteria of good translation. The first one is
accurate (A). The purpose of accurate (A) translation is that the meaning of the
source language text is transferred into the source language text accurately. There
is no deviation of meaning in the receptor language. The accuracy check of
translation is required because sometimes translator made some mistakes in the
analysis of the source language and a different meaning result. The second is clear
(C). Clear (C) means that the results of translation express all aspect of the
meanings in a way that is readily understandable to the intended audience. The
last is natural (N). Natural (N) means that the translation sounds natural. It refers
to the using of natural expressions with appropriate kind of texts which occurs in
the target language.
According to Larson (1984), a good translation is the one, which has two
Therefore, the translation that has those two out of three criteria is considered as
an ideal translation. Furthermore, a translation is failed (F) if it does not have any
single criteria.
5. Subtitle
Subtitle is a form of written translation of a dialog in a foreign language.
Dries (1995) states that subtitle delivers one language into the target language, in
a form of spoken dialog into written text. The subtitle appears in the movie.
Commonly, the subtitle is in the bottom of the screen. It is in agreement with what
Baker (1998) says that the subtitle is a transcription of dialogs in a movie and
appears simultaneously with the movie. The function of subtitle is to help the
viewer who are deaf or hard of hearing to follow the dialogs, or people who
cannot understand the spoken dialogues. In this study, the researcher uses the
Indonesian subtitle of My Sister’s Keeper movie, which is the result of the
translation of the English transcripts. The following is an example of a screen shot
with the Indonesian subtitle fromMy Sister’s Keeper.
Figure 2.1 Example of Subtitle fromMy Sister’s Keepermovie
This part presents the findings of the idiomatic expressions translation in
My Sister’s Keeper movie. The findings were gained based on Larson’s (1984)
theory of good translation which state that an ideal translation was achieved if the
translation itself had Accurate (A), Clear (C), and Natural (N) criteria. The
following table shows the results of the idiomatic expressions translations based
on Larson’s (1984) theory of ideal translation:

[2] Excerpt from 00:06:42 --> 00:06:44

I'll be right back. Aku akan segera kembali
These are two example of Ideal-Acceptable (I-Acc) translation. In the
excerpt [1], Kate already let the doctor to start the operation. She told the doctor
that she was ready. “oh, wait a minute”was the doctor’s answer, since the doctor
needs to make sure all things are already prepared. The scene took place when
this excerpt, there were two possible Indonesian translations. They are “tunggu
satu menit” (literal translation) and “tunggu sebentar” (idiom translation). The
translation“tunggu satu menit”is uncommonly used in the target language. In the
target language cultures, the translation “tunggu satu menit” also unnatural. The
target language audiences will use “tunggu sebentar” to change “tunggu satu
menit”. The translator recognized “wait a minute” was an idiomatic expression,
which meant “wait for a while”. Therefore, the translator translated “wait a
minute”to“tunggu sebentar”, which wasmore accurate for this context.
Then, the excerpt [2] was fromAnna’sdialog with her friend, Jesse. Anna
was going to the meet Mr Campbell Alexander, and Jesse was accompanying her.
The scene took place in front of Mr Alexander’soffice. Anna Asked Jesse to wait
her in front of the office. In this case, Anna decides to sue her parents, since her
parents force her to give her body’s parts to Kate, Anna’s sister. In this excerpt,
the word ‘right’ in ‘I’ll be right back’ had two possible translation; kanan
(direction), benar (correct), and segera (as soon as possible). The situation on the
movie was not a situation that needed someone gave direction or certainty.
However, the situation was about time when Anna leaved Jesse. The translator
recognized this situation and was able to deliver the message of this idiomatic
expression accurately, clearly, and naturalyinto “aku akan segera kembali”.
The two excerpts above were classified as ideal acceptable translations
because those translations were accurate (A), clear (C), and natural (N). The
translations. Those two translations delivered the message accurately, natural, and
clear to be understood by the audience. Those ideal acceptable translations of
idiomatic expressions were 44.3% from the idiomatic expressions in the My
Sister`s Keeper movie.
2. Acceptable (Acc)
The overall acceptable (Acc) translations of idiomatic expressions in the
movie are 12.2%. The next are the examples of Acceptable (Acc) translation.
Excerpt [3] was from Anna’s prologue in the beginning of the movie. Anna told
the reason why she was born. She was a designed baby, since she was born for a
particular reason. A scientist hooked up her mother's eggs and her father's sperm
to make a specific combination of genes. Her parents did it to save her sister's life.
Excerpt [4] came from Anna’s dialog with Mr Alexander. She told Mr Alexander
that she was born to be a donor for her sister, Kate.

[4] Excerpt from 00:15:07 --> 00:15:08

Those two translations were classified as acceptable (Acc) translations,
successfully delivered the message but it was not natural in the target language. In
excerpt [3], the translation “aku direncanakan” is not natural. The movie viewers
will find difficulties in grasping the meaning of the translated subtitle. Seeing the
context,“aku direncanakan”should be changed into“kelahiranku direncanakan”.
In excerpt [4], the translation ‘anak pendonor’was unnatural in this context in the
target language. The audience in target language may think that what is meant is
“anak seorang pendonor”. The researcher would like to recommend ‘pendonor’
for the target language subtitle.
3. Unacceptable (Unacc)
The percentage of unacceptable idiomatic expressions translations was
9.9% of the overall in the My Sister’s Keeper movie. Those two translation only
had clear (C) criteria. It is understandable but did not have accurate and natural
meaning based on the source language. The translations unsuccessfully delivered
the meaning of the source language, because the translations had only passed one
of three criteria.

[6] Excerpt from 00:08:07 --> 00:08:09

Excerpt [5] and excerpt [6] are examples of Unacceptable (Unacc)
translation. Excerpt [5] came from the judge’s dialog with Anna’s father, Brian.
The judge asked him to explain what they had done to Anna. The scene took place
in the court. Then, excerpt [6] came from Anna’s dialog with Mr Alexander. She
told Mr Alexander that she was born to be the saviour for her sister, Kate.
In excerpt [5], the word ‘stand up’ was translated into ‘berdiri’. People
were able to understand the translation clearly (C). However, the translator was
possibly fail to discover and re-expressed the meaning of the word. The word
“berdiri’ was not accurate (Acc) and natural (N) for this translation. In the target
language the word “berdiri” means a position or someone who want to give a
performance. The situation in the movie was not about position or giving
performance. For this excerpt, the researcher would like to recommend one
ideal-acceptable translation “jadi kau melakukanya untuk keluargamu”. The translation
is considered as ideal-acceptable because the translation itself is accurate in the
form of the target language, clear for the readers in the target language to be
understood, and natural in way of expressing it in the target language. Also, the
word ‘berdiri’ was not the correct form in the target language. The correct form
was ‘melakukanya’.
Similar with excerpt [5], excerpt [6] is acquired one criteria, clear. In this
excerpt, “spare part” was translated into “suku cadang” inaccurately and
unnaturally. In Bahasa Indonesia, the term of “suku cadang” is used for fixing
character was feeling grateful. The translation will be different if the character
feeling sad or angry, the translation “suku cadang” was correct. For the excerpt
[6], the researcher recommends an ideal-acceptable translation in the target
language. The ideal-acceptable translation is ‘Aku dilahirkan sebagai penyelamat
bagi Kate. ‘I was made in a dish to be spare parts forKate’has a meaning which
‘someone who was born to be the saviour’. The words ‘suku cadang’ was
unnatural in this context in the target language. The word ‘penyelamat’delivered
the meaning more accurately, clearly, and naturally.
4. Failed (F)
The percentage of failed (F) translations in the My Sister’s Keeper movie
was 33.6%. Excerpt [7] and excerpt [8] are examples of Failed (F) translation.
Excerpt [7] came from Kate’s dialog with her mother. Kate condition was very
bad, since there was no good thing happened after the operation. She asked her
mother to let her go.

give her body parts to Kate. Sara was very angry with Mr Alexander, because
what she had done is to safe Kate live. Then, Mr Alexander explains that what she
has done is not legal. Anna is too young to make a decision.
These two last excerpts showed that the translator only translated the
idiomatic expression literally. The translator translated it without paying attention
to the exact meaning or message of the source language. In excerpt [7], the
meaning of the word “release” was literally translated into “angkat”. Translator
was fail in discovering and re-expressing the meaning of the word. Therefore, the
translation was not accurate, clear, and natural. The researcher would like to
recommend ‘kau harus merelakanku’ for the target language subtitle. The
researcher’s translation is more acceptable because it delivers the meaning from
the source language accurately, clearly, and naturally.
Similarly, in excerpt [8], the word “stand up” was literally translated into
“berdiri”. In literal translation, this translation was correct. However, the word
“stand up” in this excerpt was an idiomatic expression. The translator was fail to
deliver the meaning of the word, since he/she translated it literally, not
idiomatically. In other words, the translator was not paid attention to the situation
in the movie. In the target language, the word “berdiri” means a position or
someone who want to give a performance. Furthermore, the situation in the movie
is not the situation when someone wants to give a performance, but the situation
when someone wants to make a decision. The researcher would like to
did not translate the idiomatic expressions from the target language. The
translation ‘dia masih terlalu muda untuk memutuskan’delivered the meaning for
the target language. Furthermore, those two translations were failed because they

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This is the last chapter of this research. It consists of two parts, namely
conclusion and recommendations. The first part is conclusion, which summarized
the finding in the discussion of the study. The second part is recommendations,
which recommends the readers regarding the idiomatic expressions translation
problem in the study.
A. Conclusion
This part presents the conclusion of the research finding. Based on the
analysis, the researcher found that on My Sister’s Keeper, there are only 57% of
the idiomatic expressions translation that were acceptable. It had two out of three
criteria of good translation. The other idiomatic expressions translation was
unacceptable. There are 43% of those idiomatic expressions translation which did
not have two out of the three criteria.
There are some errors in the translation of the idiomatic expressions in
subtitles. The percentage of failed idiomatic expressions translation was 43%. The
percentage of failed translations was taken from Unacceptable (Unacc) translation
9.9% and Failed (F) translation 33.6%. In this case, the translation was failed
pay attention on the exact meanings of the idiomatic expressions in the target
language.
B. Recommendation
This part consists of recommendations from the researcher for translators
and English learners. The first recommendation is for the translator, especially,
those who translate subtitles. The researcher recommends that the translators
deepen and sharpen the translator' knowledge of the source language and target
language. In this case, they have to deepen their knowledge of idiomatic
expressions, since there were a lot of errors in idiomatic translation. In conclusion,
they have to understand the exact meaning of the target language.
The second recommendation is for English learners. In order to help
them in mastering the language, English learners have to learn about idiomatic
expression in English and in their first language. Idiomatic expression is an
important part of a language, since it was used in daily conversation or literary

26 APPENDIX A: PLOT SUMMARY
My Sister’s Keeper
My Sister’s Keeperis an American drama film directed by Nick
Cassavetes. It was released in the United States on June 26, 2009. It’s
starring Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vassilieva, and Alec Baldwin. The
movie was adapted from Jodi Picoult's novel of the same title. Anna Fitzgerald
(Abigail Breslin) was born into the world as a savior for her sister. It happened
because of Kate’s doctor, Dr. Chance (David Thronton) suggestion, as a genetic
match for her older sister, Kate (Sofia Vassilieva). Her sister was suffering
from acute promyelocytic leukemia. She needs compatible organs, blood, and
tissue in order to alive.
When Kate turns 17, she goes into renal failure. Thirteen-year-old Anna
knows that she will be forced by her parents to donate one of her kidneys. She
also realizes that she may not be able to live the life. She may not be able to play
any sports, or drink alcohol, or be a mother in the future. Anna tells her parents
that she does not want any of this and proceeds to sue them for medical
emancipation and the rights to her own body. She goes to Mr. Alexander to help
her in this case. Lawyer Campbell Alexander (Alec Baldwin) agrees to work for
Anna as her guardian. He takes the case, not for the notoriety, but because he
suffers from epilepsy, and he also understands how it feels to have no control over
his body.
In the court, both Sara and Alexander tell their side of the story to the
judge (Joan Cusack). Sara tells about Kate’s condition, and Mr. Alexander also
tells about Anna’s medical emancipation. During her illness, Kate also meets a
fellow cancer patient. Taylor Ambrose (Thomas Dekker), whom she begins
dating. After this, he becomes her boyfriend in and out of the hospital and
supports her as she undergoes treatment. He then asks her to the hospital's "prom"
for teen patients; there, they slow-dance, then proceed to a vacant hospital room to
the dance. In anger, she reveals to Sara that they did "stuff" together, though later
learns that Taylor has died.
Kate makes a request to go to the beach one last time. Brian obtains
permission and compassionate encouragement, from Dr. Chance, who claims she
is "no more sick there", to do so. Brian discharges her from the hospital for the
day and takes her and the kids to the beach. When Brian arrives home to pick
everyone up, Sara overreacts and demands that Kate be returned to the hospital
immediately, arguing that bringing her to the beach is effectively "killing her".
Brian angrily refuses and drives off, threatening Sara with a divorce if she does
not join them. Sara shows up at the beach, where they enjoy one final family
outing. A grief-stricken Kate later attempts suicide by overdosing on painkillers,
but Anna stops her. During the hearing, Anna and Kate's brother, Jesse, reveals
while Anna is on the witness stand that Anna is actually acting under Kate's
instruction; Kate, not wanting to live any longer and be a detriment to her family,
had gently persuaded Anna to refuse to donate her kidney. Kate knew Sara would
be too narrow-minded to listen to her, though Anna also reveals that she had
wanted to give Kate her kidney of her own accord, and had been terribly upset at
Kate's decision. Sara is indignant and attempts to argue, but is finally forced by
both Jesse and Brian to realize that Kate had been trying to tell her she is ready to
die for some time. The judge makes a request to visit Kate in the hospital before
finalising the case. Later that day, as the remainder of the family leave, Kate gifts
her mother with a memory book she made over the years she was in the hospital,
and later dies while sleeping at the hospital with her mother by her side.
After Kate's death, Campbell brings the court decision in which Anna won
the case. The family moves on with their lives but reveals that every year on
Kate's birthday they go to Montana, which was her "most favorite place in the
world". Anna concludes that she was not born merely to save her sister, she was
born because she had a sister, and that she helped make life easier for everyone
else.
