AN ANALYSIS OF COMPLIMENT RESPONSE STRATEGIES IN
CONSULTATIONS BETWEEN STUDENTS AND TEACHERS

ABSTRACT
Giving and responding to a compliment is one the most frequently acts that happen in human life. It was similar to Chen in Chung (2010) idea that among speech acts, making compliments and responding compliments is one of the most frequently occurring acts in our daily activities. This study aimed at analyzing what kind of compliment response strategies used by university student and how they respond to the compliment given in consultation. 110 English Department students of Satya Wacana Christian University are selected to be the participant in this study. Discourse Completion Test (DCT) is used to study the compliment response strategies employed by the participants. They are the third and also last year students of English Teacher Education Program. The coding scheme on compliment response strategies modified from Yu by Chung (2010) is used to analyze the compliment response strategies of the participant. The finding revealed that all of the strategies were employed by the participants. The result of this study also opposing Urano’s finding on compliment response strategies among Asian speakers. The most use strategy used by the participant is acceptance strategy, followed by combination strategy, amendment strategy, and the least strategy is non acceptance strategy.
