The Australian Embassy in Paris is proud to present From here to Eternity, an exhibition of tapestries which spans twenty years of creation from a world centre of one of western civilisation's oldest and richest art forms. One of only a small number of similar workshops in the world, the Workshop boasts an international reputation for the freshness, vitality and technical excellence of its hand-woven tapestries. An intrinsic part of this success is their skilled weavers, who are also trained artists with a unique sensitivity to the visual aspects of the medium. Coupled with their technical expertise, this enables them to form a special collaboration with the artists whose designs they translate, and with the architects responsible for the environments in which tapestries are viewed. Almost 400 tapestries, designed by leading contemporary artists, hang in a range of significant public buildings and private collections around the world. Every year over 10 million people in Australia see a tapestry created by the Victorian Tapestry Workshop. Established in 1976, the Victorian Tapestry Workshop is supported by the Government of Victoria through

A MUSI CAL TRI ANGLE: AUSTRALI A, FRANCE & VI ETNAM

The public lecture-recital Vietnamese Music of the Highlands for Guitar Duotone and Overtone Singing will be held at the Centre Mandapa 6 rue Wurtz in Paris on Sunday October 3rd. This event

is collaboration between an Australian musician Le-Tuyen Nguyen (the inventor of the

staccato-harmonic duotone technique) and Tran Quang Hai (a French scholar and expert on overtone

singing) both of whom have their roots in Vietnamese culture. Program includes a lecture, the first

of its kind worldwide, giving a comparative study between the ancient overtone singing technique and a recent Australian innovation, the staccato-harmonic duotone guitar technique. This will be

followed by a recital featuring Australian/ French solo and ensemble compositions written for guitar

and voice. This collaborative research includes methods of sound production, tone colours, notation,

sound palettes and software sound analysis. These new compositions weave harmonies between a

traditional Eastern musical language and contemporary Western musical styles and create a modern

poetic image of the mystical ambience of the Vietnamese highlands. For more information and

Reading by Richard Flanagan

Monday 13 September 7pm Shakespeare and Company 37 rue de la Bucherie 75005 Paris

Australian author Richard Flanagan, one of the most original and impressive novelists working in the English language today will be reading from Wanting, a novel of magnificent power and reach. ‘One of the best novels of this year… Flanagan’s cast of virtuoso characters…are vivid, memorable beings, burnt into the retina of the imagination long after the novel comes to an end… An irresistibly good story.’ The Times

Richard Flanagan was born in Tasmania in 1961. Regarded internationally as one of Australia's pre-eminent novelists, his award winning novels Death of a River Guide, The Sound of One Hand Clapping, Gould’s Book of Fish and The Unknown Terrorist have been published to popular success and critical acclaim in twenty-seven countries. He directed a feature film of The Sound of One Hand Clapping and co-wrote the screenplay of Baz Luhrmann’s film, Australia. Tonight he will be introduced and in discussion with Steven Gale.

On Wanting:

1841. I n the remote penal colony of Van Diemen’s Land, a barefoot aboriginal girl wearing a red silk dress sits for her portrait. She is Mathinna, the adopted daughter of the island’s governor, Sir John Franklin, and his wife, Lady Jane, and the subject of a grand experiment in civilization – one that will determine whether science, Christianity and reason can be imposed in place of savagery, impulse and desire.

A quarter of a century passes. Somewhere in the Arctic, Sir John Franklin has disappeared, along with his crew and two ships, on an expedition to find the fabled Northwest Passage. England is horrified as reports of cannibalism filter back from search parties, no one more so than the most celebrated novelist of the day, Charles Dickens, for whom Franklin’s story becomes a means to plumb the frozen depths of his soul.

As several lives become conjoined by unexpected events and tragedies, Wanting transforms into a remarkable meditation on the ways in which desire – and its denial – shape our lives.

“In dense, poetic prose, Flanagan characterises something that exists across human experience, above and beyond historical particulars and cultural differences: "The way we are denied love. And the way we suddenly discover it being offered us, in all its pain and infinite heartbreak.” Giles Foden, The Guardian

WARRI ORS FOR PEACE

The Political Condition of the Aboriginal People as Viewed from Palm I sland

BY BARBARA GLOWCZEWSKI AND LEX WOTTON © I ndigène éditions, January 2008

French anthropologist, Barbara Glowczewski, who has been working with Aboriginal people since 1979 was Adjunct Professor at James Cook University during the Palm I sland riot which was sparked by the findings of the autopsy of Cameron Doomadgee, who died in custody in November 2004. She followed at the Townsville tribunal the inquest into the death and the committal hearing of the defendants charged for the riot. A book was published in French (Guerriers pour la Paix, I ndigène Editions, 2008) with a contribution by Lex Wotton who was sentenced as the ring leader of the riot in November 2009 and is to be released from jail on the 18th of July 2010.
