English Department of Satya Wacana Christian University

Abstract

Realizing many students’ who were taking Transactional Speaking courses being passive

in class, this study aims to explore factors contributing to students’ reticence. A total of eighty

English Department students enrolled in Transactional Speaking courses in a private university

level, participate in filled in the close-ended questionnaire and sixteen of them were interviewed

using semi-structured format. The study used content analysis to explore the factors contributing

students’ reticence. A Qualitative analysis is conducted to explore the findings. From the

interview, it is revealed there are four major factors influence students’ reticence in speaking

courses. Those factors are: low language proficiency, fear of losing face, teacher’s factor, and

peers’. The result indicates that teachers need to use interesting, various topics and activities

which make the students motivated to learn the target language. More research needs to be done

to help students address factors contributing to reticence in speaking courses and to increase

awareness of such factors happened while learning in EFL context.
