Correlation between Vocabulary Mastery, Reading Attitudes, and Reading Comprehension of the Second Semester Students of English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University in the Academic Year of 2016/2017. The objectives of this study are to find out the correlation between (1) vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension; (2) reading attitudes and reading comprehension; and (3) vocabulary mastery and reading attitudes simultaneously and reading comprehension.

This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational method. The population was all second semester students of English Education Department in Sebelas Maret University. The sample was class B consisting of 33 students. The sample was chosen by using cluster random sampling. Tests for testing vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension and a questionnaire about reading attitudes were used to collect data. Regression and Correlation techniques, both single and multiple, were used for analyzing data.

The findings at the level of significance α= 0.05 show that (1) there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension (rx1y= 0.5198); (2) there is a positive correlation between reading attitudes and reading comprehension (rx2y= 0.4120); and (3) there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading attitudes simultaneously and reading comprehension (Rx1.2y= 0.602). The students’ vocabulary mastery makes 23.43% effective contribution to their reading comprehension, and reading attitudes make 12.86% effective contribution to their reading comprehension. Meanwhile vocabulary mastery and reading attitudes simultaneously make 36.29% effective contribution to their reading comprehension.

It is evident that vocabulary mastery and reading attitudes, both partially and simultaneously, are vital in reading comprehension. Therefore, strengthening vocabulary mastery and designing learning activities that improve students’ reading attitudes are necessary to improve their reading comprehension.
