VI Grand Prix Salsa “Cuban Primavera” Bielsko-Biała 2012

Rules and Regulations

I General rules

1. Primavera Salsa Open is an international open competition for couples and Rueda de Casino formations.

2. Primavera Salsa Open is an annual competition. However the Organizer reserves the right to introduce changes in the form of the competition. In 2012 Primavera is a part of Festival Cubano

3. The rules of organizing and the course of the competition are defined in the hereby Regulations. The Organizer reserves the right to introduce changes do the Regulations in the following editions of the competition. Valid Regulations for the given edition of the competition is available on the

website. 4. The Organizer of the competition is Salsa-Bielsko school (Agencja Artystyczna Jerzy

Sałamun situated in Bielsko-Biała at Jutrzenki 4/22 Street) under the patronage of the founder of the competition Agencja Artystyczna Nona situated in Wrocław at Lekcyjna Street 147.

II Rules of participation

1. In the competition may participate dancing pairs as well as formations. The Organizer may limit number of participants due to organizational reasons. If such limitation occurs submissions will be accepted basing on the date of receiving the submission by the Organizer. Participants whose submissions were not accepted within the given limit will be queued on the reservation list, explicit for each category, accordingly to the submission order. In case if amount of pairs does not exceed a given limit the Organizer reserves right to increase amount of pairs in other categories until the total limit is reached. In 2012 maximal amount of pairs / rueda de casino formations / salsa formations is 15.

2. The participants must be at least 16 years old. Adolescent participants are requested to demonstrate parents'/administrator's approval when submitting and during the whole event must stay under the parent's/administrator's or indicated adult's attention.

3. The participants may come from Poland as well as from abroad.

4. The application form to take part in the competition may be submitted individually by the participant or indirectly e.g. by dance schools, dance associations, clubs, etc represented by the participant.

5. In the case of introducing to the competition categories which will enable the participants to represent a given country, at least one person of each pair must live and be a citizen of the representing country, and two thirds of the members of each formation must live or be members of the representing country.

6. One pair cannot take part in more than one, chosen by themselves category of the competition for pairs in the same year, which does not exclude the possibility of taking part in the same competition in the category of Rueda de Casino formation.

7. Both a pair as well as a formation has the right to take part in the competition every year. 8. The above-mentioned application forms concerning the participants data should be submitted by 30 April 2012 at the very latest, but the date of submission is decisive. Submissions must be filed using submission form available at

website.

9. Together with the application form each individual in pair or the formation is obliged to pay the entry fee of 40 zł into the Organizer account Bank Zachodni WBK SA I ODDZIAŁ 84 1090 1740 0000 0001 1364 4684 which is the condition to accept the application. The fee also permits to take enter the night party. All participants holding the full-pass for Festival Cubano 2012 are excused from paying the entry fee.

11. Submitting the application form means at the same time that the participant agrees for using his/her personal data according to the Data Protection Act from 29 of August 1997 e.g. article 24 of the 1 Act.( Bill of Rights No 133, position 833) The Organizer informs the participants that the personal data will be stored and transformed according to the participant agreement in the Organizer seat, only on account of hereby Regulations and in order to send advertisements and other information concerning following undertakings or competitions prepared by the Organizer. Each of the participants has the right to check or correct their personal data.

12. By submitting the application form the participant declares his will to accept the resolutions of the hereby Regulations.

13. The law which constitutes the basis for the Regulations is the Polish law.

III Cost of participation in the competition

1. Cost of participation in the competition such as: travel costs, accommodation, maintenance, food or refreshments will be covered by the participants as well as schools or dancing associations represented by them.

2. The participants assure themselves the accommodation and food during the competition. 3. When asked by the participant, the Organizer will inform them about the nearest restaurants, hotels and etc.

IV Preparation for the competition

1. The participants except the cases provided by the hereby Regulations will prepare on their own music as well as choreography and costumes for shows.

2. Pairs/formations who manage to reach the final must submit their music to the Organizer immediately after announcement of semifinal results in each category. The music should be submitted by the participants on CD (Audio format ONLY!) containing only the competition track. Each CD must be delivered together with a description that contains:

 participant’s name and a surname, category and participant's number  the title of the piece of music, the author of lyrics, the composer

 information for the DJ e.g. if the participant goes onto the stage with the music or before it starts or if there are any special marks or a tacit (pause in the music)

3. The music should be adjusted to the dance style which is to illustrate, at the same time it should be of best quality as far as registration is concerned, with clear end and cuts. It should not contain any suggestive words, implied meaning or sound that can be understood as insulting.

4. Both choreography as well as costumes presented by the participants during the competition, should be adjusted to the kind of music illustrating the show, suitable and with no elements that could be understood as vulgar or generally recognized as insulting.

5. The participants have the right to present their sponsors’ brand mark on their costumes, but they cannot be bigger than 8cm x 2,5cm or 3,25” x 1”, moreover according to the Regulations of the competition they cannot have any meaning or form that could be generally taken as insulting or violating the law.

6. The whole show should have an original character, created individually by the participants, not containing any form of plagiarism.

7. In consequence of discordance with the resolutions described in hereby paragraph concerning any show’s elements, the score of the given participant may be reduced and in case of obvious violation against the Regulations the participant may be disqualified independently of the results provided by the present law.

V Participants duties

2. The participants should behave in the above-mentioned way in particular during the competition at the place of the competition as well as in hotels, restaurants and other places, moreover whatever the circumstances, the participants must restrain from any violence, acts of aggression or any behaviour leading to violating the local law.

3. The participants have the right to ask about the results of each part of the competition according to the procedure provided by the Organizer, after getting to know what the results of a given part of the competition are, the participants should accept the results without any violent behaviour or insulting other participants or the persons deciding about the results. 4. The participants cannot bring any kind of pressure on the persons deciding about the results of the competition including: bribery, threat or beguiling in any other way or questioning the criteria that were used to evaluate the participants.

5. The participants should be always on time, polite, restrain from making unnecessary noise or movements during their shows or the shows of other participants, keep order in all the rooms used by them as well as in the dressing-room and behind the scenes.

6. The participants should let their fans know that they should restrain from noise other than cheers and another encouragement creating good atmosphere of the competition, they cannot use compressed air and other things that may irritate the jury, the audience and the participants, they should not cast any objects on the stage or disturb the shows in any other way.

VI Jury of the competition

1. Shows and the participants will be evaluated by the international jury invited to the competition by the Organizer. The jury will be composed of the instructors well known and respected in the world of salsa, representing different styles of salsa.

2. The jury will be composed of uneven number of members.

3. The list of judges will be provided by the Organizer before the competition on the competition website.

4. The Organizer has the right to change the members of the jury in case of illness or other circumstances outside control and replace the judge by another instructor of the same class. 5. The jury take all the decision and evaluate the participants in an autonomous, fair and ethical way, without discriminating or tending to favour anybody for national, racial, religious or other reasons.

6. The jury during the competition and in any situation related to the competition behave with dignity, while evaluating participants and expressing their opinions they use only essential arguments, free from malicious, insulting or humiliating gestures or expressions towards the participants, other judges or anybody else under the threat of being dismissed from the jury.

7. During the competition, the judges cannot use any means of communication with the participants or their partners.

8. The judges vote by voting forms. All the jury’s forms must be filled clearly and with ink. 9. All amendments must be crossed out, the intention of the jury will be expressed clearly with no doubts and amendments, change or crossing out will be approved with the judges signatures.

10. After passing the voting form to the supervisor, introducing any changes to the form by the judge is prohibited unless the correction is made due to an obvious spelling mistake. In case submitted form is filled out, be it partially or completely, inconsistently with competition rules or in case of ascertainment of existence of errors, judge's vote is not taken under consideration in its defective part.

11. None of the judges at any stage of the competition may restrain themselves from voting. 12. All of the voting as well as the whole competition will be supervised by a councillor or another person of public trust.

with the participant, the members of the jury have the right to warn the participant/the participants that they can be disqualified. The warning must have its explanation. If the participant in spite of being warned continues the violation, may be disqualified, according to the jury’s decision.

2. The decision to warn the participant to be disqualified or disqualifying a participant must be taken by the majority of votes and is presented to the public by the president of the jury. 3. The disqualified participant does not obtain any scores and is excluded of the given edition of the competition.

4. In the case of disqualifying one member of a pair or a formation, the jury will take a decision if his/her partner or the whole formation will be disqualified too.

VIII Rights and duties of the Organizer

1. The Organizer will ensure the dressing room and a place to prepare for the competition. 2. The Organizer will ensure the participant the possibility of having a rehearsal. The schedule will be provided for the participants on the website .

3. The Organizer may prolong the time of rehearsal for some participants on the grounds of “different time for everybody ”option.

4. The people accompanying the participants will have to buy a ticket at a price of 10EUR. 5. The Organizer will assure the light for the whole area of the stage. The technical data of the stage lights cannot be changed during the competition without any crucial reason. 6. The Organizer has the right to register all the show, and other events concerning the competition and to use it in any way and in any purpose.

IX The course of the competition

1. In 2012 the competition is divided into 3 categories: a) salsa show style groups (3-30 persons)

b) salsa cubana (casino)

c) rueda de casino (2-15 couples) d) Rueda de Casino

2. For each category the course of the competition is the same and is divided into two stages: semi final and final.

X Description of each category.

1. During presentation of each category, the shows of participants must adjust to the description of each category below and all the figures and gestures must also be adjusted to all the demands concerning each style.

2. During the shows of each category the participants cannot use any liquids or other substances that can litter, destroy or make the surface of the scene dangerous.

3. Lifting defines as: movements/figures in which two feet of one dancer are over the floor or such movements/ figures are done with help or physical support of another person are permitted if they are adjusted to the description of the given category/style.

4. Acrobatic figures are permitted if they are adjusted to the description of the given category/style, moreover, for acrobatic figures the dancer may not obtain additional scores. On the other hand when the acrobatic figures will be done in a dangerous way, the jury may even reduce the score.

5. The description of categories. Show style groups

Casino style (on 1, on 2, on 3 are all allowed and scored equally)

This style is based on the traditional Cuban son, danced mainly on Cuba and in Miami by Cuban emigrants circles. It is characteristic for its geometry of figures in circle in the centre of which is the man, leading the lady around the man in both directions, turns of the lady are mostly slow, single, characteristic and important are figures often called nudos cubanos-loops and exits demanding continuous tension in hands, the man must lead the lady in a great way, the lady must have a great intuition, figures are mostly led with two hands. Spins are not allowed. There should occur a solo improvisation in a part of the song called “bomba”. There is also a part of the performance where dancers will demonstrate their skill of dancing the tradicional Cuban son.

Rueda de Casino

Casino style –characteristic and description like in described above, danced in circle by 2 to 15 couples. All figures are done after the leader’s (so called cantador) order, very important is to enjoy dancing Rueda. To preserve the real, spontaneous character of the rueda and to avoid previously prepared choreographies, in the semi-finals all participants will draw the random numbers. Moreover, the “cantador” will receive a microphone so all his commands will be heard to the audience and jury. In the finals the group is allowed to perform a choreography. Figures in the circle must constitute at least 2/3 of the whole show, other types like lines, dancing on one place or dividing the circle of Rueda are allowed but may not dominate the show, lifting is allowed, brilliant tricks as splits, acrobatic figures are allowed but cannot dominate the whole show, group will be estimated as a whole.

XI The course of semi-final

1. Presentations: a) SALSA SHOW STYLE

Each group presents their choreography of estimated time of 4 minutes. It may be longer if the choreography requires that but it should be previously reported to the organizers.

b) SALSA CASINO STYLE

Stage 1- all couples dance together for about 2 minutes. In case of a great number of couples, show may be divided into groups of 5 couples maximum.

Stage 2 -each couple dances separately for about 3 min (including son cubano and salsa)

c) RUEDA DE CASINO

each formation of Rueda de Casino presents the show separately for about 4 min.

2. In semi-final the music divided and adjusted to each style of dance is chosen by the DJ which means that all pairs and ruedas dance to the same music. Show style formations should present choreography which in the final should be different or a bit changed. It is allowed to present the same and unchanged choreography but it will significantly reduce the score.

3. The order of the solo show is set by drawing lots. Lots are drown by choosing a number before the competition. The participants will be informed about the exact time and place of drawing.

4. The judges will award the scores on sheets with names and surnames of all the pairs/Rueda de Casino/salsa show style formations according to the 4 rules listed below awarding from 1 to 5 points. The total score is 20 points per couple/formation.

a) technique – exact relation between the basic step and the music phrase, precise execution of the steps, movements and leading, synchronisation

b) musicality – timing, choreography related to the music, and in the manner and dynamics adequate to the music

c) theatricality – costume, relation with the audience, acting

d) conception – entrance, ending, tension, adjusting the manner of dance to the music, general idea of the performance.

Salsa Show Style

a) technique – exact relation between the basic step and the music phrase, precise execution of the steps, movements and leading

b) musicality – timing, relation of the leading to the music phrase, and in the manner and dynamics adequate to the music

c) theatricality – costume, relation with the audience, acting

d) conception – entrance, ending, tension, adjusting the manner of dance to the music, general idea of the performance and relation to the character of the competition.

5. The score sheets will be counted at the presence of all the judges and a councillor who will check if the competition and the voting is run in a proper way.

6. After counting the scores, the judges chose 5 pairs/formations who have the most scores to take part in the final.

7. If in one category there is less couples/formations than in other categories, or the participans receive significantly low scores, the jury is allowed to choose less than 5 pairs/formations.

8. The scores will be announced to the public directly after counting them.

9. If two or more couples/formations receive the same score and it makes impossible choosing 5 couples/formations for the final, judges will choose one of them in the open voting.

XII The course of the final

1. In the final take part pairs and formations who were chosen in the semi-final according to the above-mentioned regulations.

2. The order of the shows will depend on the number of scores got in the semi-final, as first will dance the pair with the least scores, and then pairs with more scores, the more scores they have the later in the competition they dance.

3. Each pair/formation presents separately. The shows last maximally 3.5min, they dance to the music and choreography chosen by them. ATTENTION – introduction is not counted into show duration.

4. AWARDING SCORES BY THE JURY – the judges award scores from 1-5

5. After counting the scores the winners of each category are chosen and announced (1pair/1 formation)

6. If after counting the scores it occurs that two pairs are awarded with the same amount of scores and have ex aequo the first place, the judges will choose the winner by voting in public by majority of votes

XIII Audience Award - principles of choosing

1. The audience which is present at the whole final part of the show is allowed to take part in the voting.

3. After all the final shows are completed, voters write chosen pair/formation number in the voting form.

4. Voting form must contain only one vote – number of pair/formation. 5. Written number must be legible.

6. In case of mistake or changing the decision it is allowed to strike out and write new number. Striking out must be done using single line and confirmed by a signature.

7. Voting forms having more than one pair/formation number will be disregarded.

8. The audience chooses single winner out of all categories – pairs, rueda de casino formations and salsa formations.

9. The announcement of the voting result will occur alongside with the announcement of the Grand Prix winners.

XIV Grand Prix - principles of choosing

10. To be awarded a Grand Prix, the authorised winners of each of 3 categories will be awarded scores from 1-5 by the jury by voting in public unless, due to the mediocre level of shows in a given category, winners of this category will be excluded from Grand Prix competition by the jury. Jury's statement with regard to such decision shall be announced not later than by publishing last of the final results.

11. The voting will be preceded by a short, maximally 1 min. show of the winners of each category awarded to Grand Prix competition to the music chosen by the DJ.

12. Among the participants awarded to Grand Prix competition the jury will chose the pair/formation which is the most scenical, versatile and able to dance outside the category in which it performed in the previous stages of the competition.

13. If after counting the scores it occurs that two pairs are awarded with the same amount of scores and have ex aequo the first place, the judges will choose the winner by voting in public by raising their hand by majority of votes.

14. The judges by voting may decide by majority of 2/3 votes for that in the given year they will not award the Grand Prix at all. Such a decision needs explanation.

XV Prizes

1. The character of the prizes is first of all honourable and prestigious.

2. The Organizers of the competition may award the participant with other than honourable e.g. material or financial prizes.

3. The prizes for the competition in 2012 are:

 1st place of each category: medals, diplomas and full passes to Festival Cubano 2013 for each of the participants

 2nd and 3rd place: medals and diplomas

 Audience Award: cup/statuette

 Grand Prix: cup/statuette and financial prize of 2500PLN

XVI Appeals and complaints

1. Complaints concerning the way of running the competition will be received in a written form, sent to address Agencja Artystyczna or during the competition in the office of the Organizer, immediately after stating any violation of the Regulations but not later than 2 days after announcing the results of the competition.

2. The complaints will be considered within 21 days from the date of its receiving. The Organizer will inform the person who posed the complaint about the results of the procedure concerning the complaint.

3. After finishing the procedure concerning the posed complaint with the result not satisfying the participant, the participant has the right to pose a complaint to the court proper for the Organizer.
